The consequences of Nova’s shit playlist. KIIS is playing more fresh music and rising. Nova with so many throwbacks on high rotation is dropping all over the place

Nine’s talk radio stations No.1 for 2022

Nine's talk radio stations No.1 for 2022

Nine’s radio stations wrap up 2022 as the outright market leaders in Sydney and Melbourne.

GfK Survey 8 of 2022 reveals Sydney’s 2GB is a clear No. 1 with a share of 12.5 (up 0.9), while Melbourne’s 3AW is also a dominant No. 1 with a winning share of 15.1 (up 1.4).

In Breakfast, 2GB’s Ben Fordham reclaimed the No. 1 position in Sydney with a share of 15.7 (up 0.9).

In Melbourne, 3AW’s ACRA award-winning breakfast duo Ross & Russ posted a winning share of 23.6 – with no other station recording double figures in Breakfast. It marks the pair’s best result for the year.

In the Mornings slot, 2GB’s Ray Hadley notched up his 146th consecutive survey win with a share of 15.9 in Sydney (up 2.6) and a share of 8.9 in Brisbane where he is No. 1 in Talk.

In Melbourne, 3AW’s Neil Mitchell was the dominant No. 1 in Mornings, with a share of 17.5 (up 0.9). This marks Neil’s 57th consecutive survey win and 215th overall win across his 32 years of broadcasting the Morning slot on 3AW.

3AW posted share increases across every shift, while 2GB recorded share increases in Breakfast, Mornings, Afternoons, Evenings and Weekends.

4BC’s Laurel, Gary and Mark achieved a 8.9 share in Brisbane, while 6PR’s new Breakfast pairing, Millsy and Karl posted a strong share of 10.7 to be second overall.

Nine’s radio stations reached a cumulative audience of two million listeners every week in Survey 8, representing year-on-year growth of 11%.

Nine Radio’s Head of Content, Greg Byrnes said: “These are stunning results and we thank our listeners for tuning in each day. 2GB and 3AW have dominated all year and the lineup changes on 4BC and 6PR are delivering record audience numbers. And there will be no let-up, with our on-air teams continuing to be a trusted source of live and local news and entertainment right through summer.”

Have KIIS 101.1 aligned their music to be more up-tempo ie more dance and edgy , similar to its counterpart in Sydney? It’s an incredible result for them.

Also a high-profile breakfast show would help them. Melbourne, like Sydney is an ultra-competitive market with so many formats to choose from. Melbourne is arguably tougher than Sydney, as there is an AFL obsession in the city and 3AW and even SEN are stronger than their Sydney counterparts.

I don’t know if I’d say that. Nova have a heritage breakfast show, with two thirds of the team having been on air for 20-odd years, and Mix changed their music format only a couple of years ago. Considering this, I don’t think Mix is doing too badly, at #2 overall.

Not sure why Magic is going down, Sydney & Melbourne are definitly different markets & maybe ACE have the stations (Magic 1278 & 2UE) around the wrong way?

We’re doing some technical DAB testing in the Sydney TXA workshop/office & we’re sending the Melbourne DAB data up through our WAN, then running it through our DAB gear in Sydney & we’ve been locked on to Magic in the office for weeks now & are loving it, it’s perfect for what we all want to hear in the office, we’ve come to the conclusion that when the DAB testing is over, we’ll have to stream Magic into the office, to continue listening.

Smooth FM (DAB) is No. 1 on DAB in Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide. Although I’m not really a fan of their current playlist, well done to them for actually investing in a DAB-only station.

Apart from introducing some form of RnB Fridays, has much of the Mix music format changed?

Do they sound more female skewed than when they were aligned with Triple M?

Magic 1278 needs an advertising campaign to promote itself in the market, they should do an ad focusing on its 60s and 70s music, an era that Gold 104.3 abandoned in the late 2000s in favour of its current 80s and 90s playlist. A good tagline would be “the sixties and seventies are back on Melbourne radio!” How about it Ace Radio and its advertising agency! Cruise 1323 went from nothing (a failed SEN relay) when it launched in Adelaide and look where they are in the ratings now! There is still ratings and an audience for 60s and 70s music.

A big end to Nova 93.7 cementing themselves as Perth’s favourite FM radio station and the #1 performing Nova radio station in the country.

Agreed, Magic plays a good assortment of music. I cannot understand why 3MP rates higher than Magic. As others have suggested a Magic advertising campaign would be a good idea.

They used to play 70’s, 80’s to now, with more of a rockier skew (I certainly wouldn’t call them a rock station though). When they played female artists, they tended to be 80s (Madonna, Cyndi Lauper, etc).

Since the format switch, they’re way more current, with a lot more new stuff, a bit of 00’s, 90’s and the very occasional late 80’s track. They initially swung a little too new, and pissed off their old core audience, so they brought some more 80’s and early 90’s in to try and bring them back.

Team that with 92.9 changing their format completely to go from a very current Hit format, to Triple M. And even since becoming Triple M, they’ve changed their music just recently to focus on 90’s and 00’s music, with a bit more variety.

2GB ends the year as Sydney’s definitive No.1

2GB 873 has ended 2022 on a high as the undisputed No.1 radio station in Sydney, with an audience share of 12.5 of People 10+ (up 0.9 on Survey 7). This is 2GB’s 146th consecutive survey win.

Ben Fordham is back on top in Breakfast, with a 15.7 share (up 0.9 points) and Ray Hadley continues his unbroken run as No. 1 in Mornings, also recording his 146th survey win with a 15.9 share (up 2.6 points).

Ben Fordham said: “It’s an early Christmas present for the hard working team at 2GB. We go the extra mile for our listeners and appreciate the loyalty. For the Breakfast show, we’re humbled to win the ratings year again, as we did last year. Don’t believe the spin from elsewhere, 2GB Breakfast is the number one show in Sydney. Merry Christmas to our wonderful listeners.”

2GB Content Manager, Luke Davis, said: “Right throughout 2022, Sydney has turned to 2GB in the moments that matter. It’s been another big news year, with a Federal election, floods, strikes, ongoing COVID concerns and cost-of-living pressures, as well as significant deaths that have touched our city, our country and the world. Talk Radio is as important as ever, and today’s results solidify that fact that 2GB remains an indelible part of the lives of Sydneysiders.”

So will 2MMM do a surprise with the new breakfast show coming and go “alternative” like Perth for 2023?

I’m not sure SEN are chasing ratings tbh.
