Looking at the demo ratings, it’s interesting to see Gold 104.3 being the #2 station in the 25-39s behind Fox with a 13.4% share. By comparison, the best WS could do in that same demo this survey is 7th with a 5.6% share, with Smooth outrating it by 4.3%, coming in at 3rd place, as well as by 2Day & 2MMM, who tied at 5th place with 7.8% a piece.
Part of the reason why Gold does so well in Melbourne in contrast to WS in Sydney is the fact that Fox doesn’t do a “More Music, More Variety” format that 2Day does, and therefore has less competition on that front.
Hopefully after the takeover is complete Nine will do something about Macquarie Sports Radio and NTS News Talk Sport. There is no point in broadcasting if next to no one (MSR) and no one (NTS) is listening.
I put Gold’s performance to how Melbourne surveys tend to operate - there always seems to be stations which experience either a big jump or a sharp fall either generally or in a certain timeslot
Yeah, a worrying trend has emerged with that show’s performance. Perhaps it’s a natural thing considering it’s now a ‘aging’ show having been on the air for 10 years
In only a year from now - Survey 6 of 2020 will have been released. I wonder if we will see any changes in radio land with what are some persistent losers in the ratings.
For example, the Hit stations with the big blue "H"s are the lowest rating commercial FM stations in:
Sydney
Brisbane
Adelaide
Perth
I think it may be time to deflate the big blue “H” and try something that resonates a little more with under 40 audiences. Or will they give it a go for another year and hope like hell that audiences somehow gravitate to them.
How long can failed formats or shows last? Who will buckle first - the Hit Network, Ben Fordham on 2GB Drive, KIIS Melbourne or MSR?
You would be referring to the S5/2018 figures, where hit105 was #1 with 11.8%, with 4MMM, 97.3 & Nova not far behind, with only 0.4% separating #1 & #4.
On a similar tangent, it’s amazing to think that just 12 months ago during S6/2018, 96fm was the lowest rating commercial FM station in Perth with 7.2%. Now, it’s knocking at Nova’s door for the #1 spot!
Brisbane is a horrendously boring market at least from an FM perspective. Thank god for 4KQ and the fringe FM stations.
As for the major FMs it’s in dire need of a shakeup. None of them seem willing to actually break away and try anything different and hence they are all stuck in this deadlock. It’s not that they’re competitive IMO it’s that they are all equally bad.
97.3 could be clear No 1 if they went broader and softer with the playlist and ditched the networked shows.
Triple M could be clear No 1 if they did a 96FM
Hit 105 would be No 1 if they copied 2day’s playlist.
The Brisbane market is very different from Sydney due to there not being a WS FM or Smooth FM. The 2day playlist would go gangbusters in Brisbane for that reason.
Hit 107 in Adelaide is a good example, which has a similar format to that of 2Day, even using the same “More Music, More Variety” positioner. Plus, its market is a bit similar to that of Brisbane, at least in terms of the number of commercial music stations (4 x FM; 1 x AM).
The station is #1 in the 25-39s with 17.5%, and is 3rd in the 40-54s behind Mix 102.3 & 5MMM with 12.3%.
I wish the failing stations would at least do something. MSR and 2DayFM in Sydney are quite happy to just flounder along from survey to survey.
MSR leaves me speechless. Can’t they see the relative success of 2CH, 4KQ, cruise or 6iX? They are rating a 1.1 and continue to persist with the whole endeavour. I would have pulled the plug a year ago. There’s no coming back from a 1 share. Please someone - flick the switch.
As for 2DayFM - maybe it’s time for The New 2DayFM to shake things up as The Rock of the 20s next year. Do something. Anything.
