Metro Radio Ratings - Survey 5, 2024

Thank you Melbourne…. The cultured city! :ok_hand:

Hopefully this puts a stop on networking other shows into other markets.

KISS… what a big fuck up!

Yes don’t let Kyle and Jackie O into Brisbane next year ,it will fail dismally

They have to cut costs dramatically due to the amount they overpaid Kyle and Jackie O, but it will also mean tanking their KIIS stations outside Sydney, as it’s doing to Melbourne.

I don’t think they’ll care anyways, Kyle will seemingly demand them to network into Brisbane, despite poor ratings - it’s part of his plan to go national. Just like when he demanded a new state-of-the-art studio before networking into Melbourne, and if they didn’t listen to him, he would’ve quit KIIS and not re-signed with them.

With the way things are going for this station, looks like KIIS wants to quickly turn themselves into a HPON network for the niche… (sarcasm)

The problem with KIIS Melbourne is not its breakfast show. The problem with KIIS Melbourne is that it has been chopped, changed and flogged for many years now.

People need to stop putting down 2DayFM, when 101.1FM Melbourne has been in that situation for nearly twice as long.

You would hope that Kyle and Jackie have copies of their $200M decade long contract.

I’m sure ARN may be regretting spending the one-fifth of a billion bucks on a show that seems to have gained them 0.2% market share in Melbourne. In the latest survey their cume fell by 11 000 - it seems that Melbournians have sampled the show and are tuning out.

KIIS has been wildly successful in Sydney but the station with the lips for a logo is not working anywhere else. I am no accountant but I would suggest that the Sydney duo may have been paid $100M too much in their 10 year contract.

It’s so weird seeing Kyle and Jackie O as a train wreck. And for $20 000 000 a year and a 6.1% rating, it is pretty much the definition of a train wreck.

Includes a Q&A with Nova’s group programming director Brendan Taylor on Jase and Lauren’s success in the latest survey.

“It really is (a real competitor),” said Taylor. “There’s no doubt they have got to ride the highs and lows now as all big shows do. But just look at their share and cume. Shows move around and theirs might too in the future. You can’t take anything for granted in a tough market like Melbourne.”

While the branding of the new Melbourne FM radio king and queen features Jase and Lauren, Taylor wanted to celebrate the work of Clint Stanaway. “Clint is such a vital part of that team. He brings his background in TV, his journalistic skills and his love of Melbourne.

“When you combine that with Jase and Lauren it makes them a great team. It’s chemistry you don’t often see and they are friends outside of work too. His name’s not in the title, but it doesn’t mean he has any lesser share of voice in the show.

Yep if they think Melbourne is underwhelming, wait till they see what will happen in Brisbane

At some point common sense has to prevail. The expansion of K&J is a bust. It only ever really made any sense if they also had complimentary FM stations in Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth (ie. Triple M). And even then it’s clear the smutty and lowbrow show doesn’t appeal outside of Sydney, no matter what the fanboys think.

It’s flat lining already in Melbourne, and I think that’s as good as it gets.

Heads need to roll at ARN in my opinion, or better still a sale to someone like Bauer or NE who knows what they’re doing with station formats and how to control costs.

I’m so happy for Jase & Lauren. It’s a huge win that deserves to be celebrated. To be dumped from one network and then become the #1 FM radio show 9 months later really is incredible.

The bigger problem for me is that KIIS in Melbourne have gone all national and they don’t have any local shows. Not even during the day do they have a local presenter doing music and the drive show broadcast from Melbourne is still a national show. When I flicked on the other day the news (which is an opportunity for something local) was hijacked with Jackie’s ‘O News’ at the end of it. Then they have the Hour of Power highlights in the evening. They are really trying to dig this big investment into K&JO into everything and for me it’s been a real turn off.

They have had the 6pm Hour of Power show dating all the way back to the 2Day FM days.

This is not a new thing to gain Melbourne listeners.

but they didn’t have four hours in the morning, that hour seems unnecessary

Yes they did. Not officially until recent years but they have always gone past 9am even when they were at 2Day.

I’m talking about Melbourne

Well obviously, they only just started airing in Melbourne.

What’s your point? Melbournians can’t handle the same show going for 4 hours?

christ sake, read my post again. 4 hours in the morning and then the hour of power is excessive.

You don’t have to be rude about it.

You are always so nasty man.

They’ve done it in Sydney like that for over 15 years and never changed it so they clearly think it isn’t an issue there.

Depends on the show I guess. If people don’t like it, adding more time isn’t going to help.

Of O’Connell’s result, Campbell says “We haven’t spent money on marketing him as much as we have with Kyle and Jackie O, so there’s the lack of top-of-mind awareness for him, which resulted in the decline today.”

I don’t accept that excuse.

Christian lost a lot of listeners who were already listening. How would marketing him keep listeners? They’re already listening. That doesn’t make sense. I’m not going to keep listening to a particular radio show just because they’re being shown in promos and billboards etc.

Those listeners left for another reason. Saying they left because the show wasn’t marketed is a strange excuse.

The difference is that Kyle and Jackie O are based in Sydney and they have a big local audience up there. The Melbourne expansion hasn’t set the world on fire so it is definitely excessive for Melbourne.

My original point was the fact that they are thrown in listeners faces all day on KIIS (4 hours in the morning, O News updates throughout the day and then the Hour of Power) on top of the fact that there is no real specific Melbourne content. They aren’t loved enough here to pretty much make the station revolve around them. It just makes the station feel more and more Sydney centric.
