Smooth FM rolls 2GB to take No.1 Sydney radio spot as ABC struggles
Listeners are continuing to turn away from ABC mornings, but there was some good news for the national broadcaster.
K&J up in both Syd and Mel while the breaky shows and overall shares are all down in Bne, Adl and Per.
Go on ARN, go national with them. You know you want to… ![]()
Brilliant result for Nova in Melbourne, retaining top spot at breakfast and up 2% in both 10-17 and 18-24 demos. It was also second at drive after Gold 104.
Gold was ranked No.1 overall in Melbourne in a minor upset. It almost toppled 3AW in the 9am to midday slot (just 0.1% between them). It had the No.2 breakfast show in Jack Post’s final survey as a member of Christian O’Connell Show.
Both 3AW and ABC 774 were down. The embattled Radio National Breakfast with Sally Sara posted gains in the key markets of Sydney and Melbourne, but lost ground in Brisbane, Adelaide (where it lost half of its audience share from previous survey) and Perth.
Both 2GB and 3AW knocked off the number one spot. Nine won’t be happy.
97.3 is a disaster beaten by 4BH in Brisbane.
Here are the overall radio ratings in ranking order.

It’s the music format. They can’t compete with B105 and Nova in the CHR space. Their audience is drifting to Triple M and 4BH
I dunno. Their breakfast cume went up only 6,000 in Melbourne, while Nova’s breakfast cume went up over 20,000
I wonder if we’re seeing post-covid fatigue for news and talk radio with more listeners tuning into music stations.
Post election probably, more than post Covid.
Massive for Triple M Perth. Up 3.4 in breakfast to leapfrog into second place. 10+ up 1.7 to 10.9 also has them finally peeking into a contender position
Big drop from Nova down a whopping 4.0 points in breakfast but remain in the number 1 spot.
Ends an 11-year (84 surveys) winning streak for 3AW. 3AW hasn’t lost a survey since Survey 5/2014
we’ll be getting the same stories that K&J have “turned the corner” (again) in Melbourne

I find it very interesting that both the “Other AM/FM” and “Commercial DAB+” in Brisbane are the biggest shares of any of the metros by far. In fact these categories are 3rd and 4th in the ratings. This to me shows major dissatisfaction and gaps in the formats being offered by the mainstream FM stations. The result is due to no Gold or Smooth format on FM, and losing 97.3 as an AC station.
Memo to ARN, a fair chunk of the Other AM/FM figure would be River 94.9. You might just want to consider putting them on DAB in Brisbane… Just a thought ![]()
Is there a way to see the shares of the “Other AM/FM” stations individually?
Not that I know of.
It’s a different story on Gold in Sydney… it went dip on all of them except the weekends.
I dunno. Their breakfast cume went up only 6,000 in Melbourne, while Nova’s breakfast cume went up over 20,000
It can be tricky to compare both shows’ cumes due to the differing finishing times.
Looking under the hood at the breakdowns:
J&L … 6am-9am … S3 737k | S4 757k (+20k)
K&J … 6am-10am … S3 476k | S4 495k (+19k)
Not that I know of.
Correct - as they don’t pay to enter the survey they are grouped together.
Listeners are continuing to turn away from ABC mornings, but there was some good news for the national broadcaster.
Looking at the demos, Gold Sydney is doing pretty poorly in the 40-54s, only managing a 5.8% share (down 2.3 from the previous survey), being beaten by the likes of KIIS, Smooth, 2MMM, 2GB & Nova in that order. The station still does well in the 55+, scoring 14.5% (#2 behind Smooth) in the 55-64s & 10.8% (#4 behind 2GB, ABC Sydney & Smooth) in the 65+. 62% of Gold Sydney’s audience are over 55.
By contrast, Gold Melbourne is doing well in the 25-39s & 40-54s (where it is #1 in the latter), and is dominant in the 55-64s. 49% of Gold Melbourne’s audience are over 55.
Quite an interesting contrast between the two Gold stations, even though they share the same playlist & on-air presenters (outside of breakfast).
