Media Spy: History and Memories

Are you referring to me in all 3 instances? Because I use paint.net thanks!

More broadly everyone, but you’re the stereotypical MediaSpy user I guess :winking_face_with_tongue:

No, there’s only one ECC. When they made me, they broke the mould.

I’m glad to have been here - haven’t been active in terms of posting lately (moved onto other things) but I still check the forums regularly.

Strange to think I joined here in December 2020, around the half way mark - and how five years have passed since then. I wouldn’t say I’ve been that active in a few years, I remember spending hours daily here back in 2020-2022, but I’ve been here the whole way through.

I joined for my interest in media - but I stayed because of the members here. Some of you were here when I first joined MediaSpy, others are newer than me, others were there before me but have since left… but all of you have changed my life in a good way.

As said, I’m not as active as I used to (and probably for the good, I was a bit immature back when I first joined!) and some may have thought I’ve left, but I still check the forum most days. Congratulations on 10 years of the Discourse forum - and here’s to 10 more years.

Happy 10th to MS 2.0!

I joined in 2020, but I had been scouring the forums since 2016, around the time 7NEWS relaunched their graphics that August. Would have loved to be a part of the vintage Media Spy community, especially considering the historic discussion regarding Seven’s 2004 rebrands and beyond, but a pleasure to be surrounded by such passionate media people.

Great another reminder I’m closer to clocking 20 years across both iterations of MediaSpy.

Happy decade Discourse MediaSpy!

I still miss using the old IPB. As a user that is - IPB was a pain in the ass to admin. Invision took too long to get on board with mobile support and never really recovered from that. IPB still exists but I hardly ever see it used anywhere.

I didn’t like Discourse at first but I hate change. I don’t mind it these days.

In a couple of months it will be 23 years for me, off and on. I really dislike this whole getting old business.

You arrive around 2005? I thought you were contributing much earlier.

that was just my recollection I don’t have any record, it might have been earlier although i was probably more present on aus.tv newsgroup in the early 2000s

You joined the old forum on November 5, 2005 so you just passed your 20 years. Congrats

gosh, was that from web archive??

I use to read the forums from around 2004… but I don’t think I created an account until 2005 but I always remember you being here.

Time sure flies, I’ll be coming up to 5 years on this site myself in February. Can’t say it hasn’t been an interesting time for media since then.

I’ve been with Media Spy since the Media Central days and I used to help moderate and manage the forums. I believe there was a few years which I was not involved or contributed much. But been here since the very very beginning.

21 years for me - I think. I remember reading the forums around the telethon for the Banda Aceh Australia Unites telethon.

Crazy to think how much has changed in the last 20 years - the forum was (and still is) a window into presentation and news in other parts of the globe that you couldn’t see elsewhere - and learning others had a similar interest and fascination in news or channel presentation was fascinating.

Now - it’s different. Broadcast television no longer holds the place it did, neither does TV news. But I find the changing face of the media fascinating still.

Every time I end up on the archive I am reminded of all the people whose names are still familiar today. Some are still here under new names of course but there’s something special about seeing the original usernames. I could do without feeling old, but that is what it is.

It really is awesome that so many are still here now. We used to spend hours a day on here either getting excited or arguing over the smallest of details. None of us really have the time for that anymore but I still love it whenever a change happens and everyone starts up again.

Sure, there was a time when I wanted nothing to do with Media Spy, and perhaps if I never ended up on the other side of the world we may still have a split member base, but all of that bullshit is in the past and it’s nice to see almost everyone was able to come back together after all of that.

The media as we know it now is likely to be a distant memory in another 20 or so years, and by then we’ll be too old to give a shit, but for now it’s nice that we can still do this.

Happy 10 Years ‘Media Spy 2.0’

I joined back in May 2009 just to lurk around until around 2010 when I made mocks of “WIN with dots” which I might add they were terrible mocks…but hey I was 13 at the time.

Then I’d mainly post on the TV History thread sharing my VHS finds which I still do from time to time on here.
