Happy 10 Years to MediaSpy 2.0!

It was on this day 10 years ago that Media Spy made the move to Discourse.

Since then, there has been so many changes to the media industry - 10 went into administration and was purchased by CBS, Kyle and Jackie O invaded Melbourne, Cricket went to Seven, Tennis went to Nine, Neighbours got axed twice, cuts to regional news bulletins, the rise of MAFS, COVID-19, WIN inflicting Mappy on the country, LukeMovieMan becoming @Sully

However, some things stay the same, like Fergo, against the odds, still being on the weeknight chair in Sydney, Perth is still a cult that watches Rick and Sue like there is no other news service, @Nicholas fainting whenever 10 brings out the sweeping camera shots, and Rob Brough (Bort) still having the best wink in the country

Special thanks of course have to go to the mods, both past and present - @OnAir, @bacco007, @Steve, @WAtvVideos, @TelevisionAU, Bort, NewsWeary, and Squee, for their hard work keeping the site tidy, occasionally (and rightfully) pulling us into line if we are in the wrong, remembering to pay the hosting bills, and most important of all - feeding the hamsters that power this site.

Also additional thanks to @TV.Cynic, who works 24/7 to do everything from getting caps of a minor graphics failure on a late night update in Cairns, to compiling the daily ratings reports, including expert analysis on the data.

However, what makes any community special, or unique, are the people in it, so I just want to say thanks to all of you for helping create this place where we can come, shitpost about the media (and other random stuff), and also, take the piss out of each other (or at least @ElCapitanCranky and @Radiohead while the rest of us watch on with popcorn).

Looking forward to the next 10 years as we continue to discuss the whatever comes next.

P.S. based on some of the discussion in this thread, I think we have also reached 25 years of MediaSpy overall.

Happy 10 Years to Media Spy 2.0.

Thanks @Expensive_Horse5538 for the post. A great insight of what has happened in the last decade (and some things that never change).

Although i am more of a sit back, eating the popcorn while things happen, type of guy… it has been a great run in here overall. Lots of joys, with some mayhem on the way…

A big thank you to all that is involved in behind the scenes (as mentioned in the above post). And welcome to the newcomers who are finding their way in here.

Keep up the great work. And remember to keep on watching TV, listening to the radio, and reading magazines (of what few are left), to keep this site up and running.

i can quit watching them anytime, i swear! :stuck_out_tongue:

in all seriousness though, I spent more time on MediaSpy 2.0 than I did on the older MediaSpy, and I have enjoyed every minute I have spent on this site. To think I was a cringe 15 year old when joining, but now I’m 25, but still have that spark of passion for media that I did as a teenager.

To all those who have made me feel welcome, and the people I got to know more because of this website, thank you, and thank you to the mods who work hard every day to keep the site in tip top shape. i love that we can discuss the media, but also joke about it at the same time - with Australia being a unique media market, we kinda have to let off some steam every one in a while lol!

here’s to another 10 years!

Seems we’re all writing thank you cards to MediaSpy, so here goes.

Cheers to 10 years of MS 2.0,
Despite only being part of MS2.0 for 1.5 out of the 10 years, it’s been fabulous fun.

Enjoy reading all the threads, the discussions (and disagreements) between members, and engaging with a community that cares. I’ve spent way more time on this site in the past year than I should have (probably lol). Shoutout to the mods for keeping the hamsters running, especially in recent times with the squeeze.

Thanks to the incredible @TV.Cynic for being our eagle-eyed ratings reporter, and feeding us caps of everything, we probably wouldn’t have half the stuff on the site otherwise.

I’m only just beginning my journey on MediaSpy - probably following in the footsteps of all of you from way back when :t_rex::t_rex: - so here’s to another 10 years of insight, @ElCapitanCranky and his jokes, Microsoft Paint mocks, and taking the piss out of poor decisions in Aussie media.
Couldn’t be gladder to be here.

Thanks for the memory rush.

There was some reluctance to leave the familiar and make the move to Discourse but updating to a better platform turned turned into a great decision.

I remember the first couple of days frantically trying to reformat my overnight ratings templates to fit the new code. And then later asking @bacco007 to add in new features like tables and even colour!

Then trying to work out where all the new topics were going to land and how to present them. Now it is second nature but it took a while to settle into the current pattern. There were probably a dozen or so members on the first day making topics but there was a limit of something like 50 per member per day. Most topics started with something like “continues from xxx” on the old forum with a link and some of those still exist today if you go back far enough.

Found one that I stated -

Apart from the mechanics of the site, it’s the membership and discussion that keeps you coming back. Thanks to you as well as the mod team that keep us well behaved.

Also, thanks for the comments above and looking forward to another 10 years of font changes to the Sunrise clock.

Went back on Internet Archive to see how the site’s aesthetic developed over time and found this.

Do we still do this sort of polling?

Can you still do a Poll?

I’ve spent more time on 2.0 than the original site, because I wasn’t aware it existed until 2016

Yeah, well, I spent 10 years on both, so whatever.

I’ll be racking up a decade of contributions soon; honestly so hard to believe!

I’m proud to see the current Media Spy logo still standing. I won the logo design competition a few years back. If my memory is correct, it’s approaching 5 or so years old? Anyway, that kickstarted a career in design as I’m now a Marketing Specialist for a large retailer!

I don’t contribute much anymore as my passion for media has all but dwindled; I’ve been through ebbs and flows before though so who knows!

Happy Birthday Media Spy 2.0! :tada:

I’ve only ever been on 2.0. I still remember many years ago I found out about this website well before it changed to 2.0, I tried to go on here and it wouldn’t work so I didn’t bother. I didn’t go on here again until around late 2016 so I didn’t even know the change happened until years later.

I’m amazed we’ve got to 10 years on this platform! To be honest, I’d lost count many years ago.

I want to thank everyone who’s participated over the last 10 years. Our longevity is in large part thanks to the contributions made by our members.

A big thank you also to current and former moderating/admin staff (who I won’t name in case I forget someone) and to our ratings coordinator @TV.Cynic, who goes above and beyond to ensure ratings go up pretty well as they drop into mailboxes.

Happy 10 years to MediaSpy 2.0!

I originally found this website in March 2007 and am so glad I have. I have been visiting (almost) every day since then.

Thank you so much to everyone who keeps this site running and to everyone who contributes.

I’ve enjoyed visiting this website and reading/contributing all the topics and will continue to do so.

Here’s to many more years!

I think you and I came around the same time. 2004/5.

I’ve only been here for 4-ish years but instead of doomscrolling social media I doomscroll through old posts on here sometimes to brush up on some history for my niche little nerd interest. I appreciate everyone who has spent time and effort documenting and preserving even the smallest details, I appreciate all the contributors who I enjoy discussing the industry with, and I appreciate the moderator/admin team for keeping this site running. Here’s to the future!

I’ve been around since 2002. Fond memories of some TV insiders back in the day, and when they used to re-skin the site every 12 months or so. MrQ was a very talented designer who did a bunch of themes for it.

Don’t post much anymore, still visit to read people’s thoughts though.

I remember the scramble we all had to recreate all the topics when we moved across.

Good times. Let’s hope we don’t need to change platform again in the near future.

Thanks to those that run the machine and to those who post information on Media Spy. It’s usually the first place I check when news is breaking about anything in the media.
