More of his work in the British Television thread.
From a personal standpoint i met Dawn at Supernova 2016. She was so lovely and engaging and i even got a photo of her from her mary-ann days signed. I had just met Bonnie Wright (Ginny Weasly) and was the oldest in the queue (my wife loves harry potter but could not come) to Dawn where i was the youngest and she commented on it and made a joke.
So sad to hear that.
It saddens me when young adults say theyāve never seen an episode of Gilliganās Island and donāt get cultural references to classic sitcoms like that show and Get Smart but can rattle off quotes from The Simpsons, Family Guy and The Big Bang Theory. The sitcoms and characters those of us over 40 grew up with arenāt being seen and appreciated by younger generations in this country. We have all these multi channels yet the networks are too cheap to acquire the classics for a MeTV (US) type channel or even a bloc of programming dedicated to iconic television.
I remember Dawn Wells appearing on Midday many time when Ray Martin was hosting. I think she was a paid roving reporter and contributor for a time during those years.
Back when we had Nick@nite on nickelodeon it was fantastic for these shows
Iām sure thereād be an audience for that type of programming again. Most of the classics the networks scheduled in afternoon slots in the '70s and '80s had ended before I was born yet I still have an appreciation for them. I sometimes enjoy tapping into one of the free streamers, like Pluto TV, to catch shows like The Beverley Hillbillies, Green Acres, Petticoat Junction, I Dream of Jeannie and My Three Sons. Easy comfort viewing that doesnāt require too much thought to take your mind off the world and give you an appreciation for the past.
A tribute from I Dream of Jeannie Star Barbara Eden.
When my family introduced us to Get Smart and Kingswood Country what became clear to us was where dad got most of his sayings and material from!
āMissed by that muchā, āsorry about that Chiefā, āDonāt dad me boy, Iām your fatherā then thereās the movies too like Flying High which has a lot of references that people donāt seem to get as I saw in a reddit thread yesterday when someone didnāt get āHave you ever been in a Turkish prison?ā
I still do the āwould you believeā¦ā
add The Simpsons to that list of shows people dont get references too - particularly the young folk
I donāt get any references to The Simpsons, and Iām not young!
TV1 used to carry all those shows when Foxtel first started. It was great to see good quality colour prints of the hows for the first time as well.
Iāll bet a hundred dollarydoos thereās at least one Simpsons reference youāll get! Come on, I know you want the Dāoh!
As I have written here before I have only ever watched one full episode, so it is doubtful.
Itās sad but probably inevitable with every moving on the generations. My parents talk about shows they listened to and remember so well on the radio (pre-TV) and also watched in the early days of TV but I am largely oblivious to them.
Likewise, the shows the the 20 year olds are watching now will probably not be appreciated by the next generation in 20 years time.
