Football journalist Andrew Dettre has passed away
Dettre has a rare place in Australian TV history as the presenter of the first sports program on the first test transmission for what is now SBS television.
Although very highly regarded as a journalist and editor of Soccer World newspaper and advocate for the football (soccer) community, Dettre did not make it to SBS when it was officially launched (as Channel 0/28) in 1980. The network had instead picked up Les Murray to be its leading sports presenter.
There was a clip on YouTube but I can’t find it now, showing Dettre’s hosting.
