I wonder if the midnight snack challenge was done just hours after Jimmy’s elimination, or on the same day as the immunity challenge against a chef? Either way, the contestants would not have much sleep.
If you’re a fan of Nigella’s cooking shows you’ll know just how important a good midnight snack is. Gotta love her.
Yes but you expect that in the earlier stages. Of course when there are 20 or so contestants they can’t show everyone, and they are going to give the airtime to the great dishes and the not so great dishes.
I would hope those background profiles would continue throughout the season. We have 19 contestants still remaining as of last night… it’s impossible to know every contestant so well at this stage. It’s always good to get those sort of refreshers on them throughout the season as well.
Also for the record the contestants that stand out for me so far are Charlie, Karmen, Matt, Mimi, and Trent. Just my personal opinion. If none stand out for you it’s not surprising - you seem to devote a lot of time to a show that you clearly hate almost every aspect of.
It’s not about knowing every contestant well, rather simply knowing that they exist. Imagine if you were Elena, or one of her family members, at home watching this back - deliberately hidden by editing for 3 weeks - how awful is that? I don’t think we even saw her present during team challenges. And if we did, then to leave that impression is horrible editing.
Look it’s personal opinion but the only stand out there I’d agree with is Matt and maybe Mimi. Charlie and Karmen have had some absolute shockers - in fact, they’ve probably been more poor than good. Charlie was saved by Marco’s as ever accurate (not) assessments on contestants.
Tonight does look really interesting, hope it’s good
After 8 years of the show, anything’s possible. Is this a first?
Tonight’s interesting, in that there’s all Gary, Matt, George, Shannon & Nigella there!
is what a first?
Interesting episode tonight. Matt Preston asked Harry to wake up Karmen and Mimi just after 3am to make the midnight snack. How many people will eat at that hour? I notice the other 15 contestants appeared at the lounge when the cooking was going on, were they woken up by the sound in the kitchen or by the crew (hopefully not the latter)? Nigella and Matt were very concerned with Harry, I wonder if they wanted him to win the cook-off all the time?
The second half was another low-scoring immunity challenge as Lachlan Colwill beat Harry by just one point. In terms of what to cook, I thought Harry had a clearer idea than the contestants in the previous three challenges (including Nicolette who won the pin), his flaw was just following his instincts and not listening to Shannon’s advice. Lachlan was lucky, he put the tempered chocolate on the bench top above the oven which nearly affected the texture, and also did not put enough brandy in the ice-cream. Both things cost him valuable points.
I was initially surprised that Harry could chose from either Christmas savoury or Christmas dessert, then I realised the episode was filmed two weeks after Christmas, so maybe the show was playing catch-up celebrating the festive season. Which makes me wonder: do the contestants celebrate Christmas at their shared house?
Yeah I thought it was good, different.
It was good having Nigella also judging at the end, threw a spanner in the works with the scoring there
You’re nailing it now ![]()
What was Harry thinking doing a pavlova in the immunity challenge? It’s such a basic dish… throwing some meringue with a few pieces of fruit did not even deserve the scores that he got in my opinion. He needed to be more inventive if he wanted to go down that line and not taking Shannon’s advice on how they do a pavlova at Vu de mont was plain stupid.
If you are asking if waking them up in the middle of the night to do a challenge is a first then no. If you are asking if doing a challenge in the Masterchef house kitchen is a first then that isn’t either.
In the second week of season 5, the top 23 contestants went to Barossa Valley for a boot camp. George woke them up in the middle of the night and demanded them to get dressed and compete in the next challenge.
But Nigella waking up the Masterchef contestants to do a challenge is a first ![]()
Last season they also woke them up in the early hours of the morning to do that bakery challenge. I also remember in one of the earlier seasons (probably season 3) at around the top 4 or 5 stage they made them do a challenge in the house. There has probably been other times too.
I just loved how terrible the contestants all looked being woken up in the middle of the night but Nigella was all done up looking stunning. ![]()

Here’s a tip. Reality TV isn’t about reality. When it all boils down it was probably filmed earlier in the night, hours before they were going to bed anyway. Just because they say it’s 3am and they are shown to be woken up doesn’t mean that’s what really happened.
Of course they were woken or told to be there.
From January 14:
The fete will be shown tonight. Let’s see what exactly happened there.
I also posted this on that day:[quote=“JohnsonTV, post:31, topic:366”]
If the fete (team challenge) took place on Tuesday, then today should be elimination. I won’t be surprised if Nigella hosts a MasterClass tomorrow or Saturday, before her first official book signing (which is next Monday in Melbourne).

I don’t ever watch the immunity challenge on Tuesday nights.
You mustn’t be very familiar with Nigella’s cooking shows? She’s notorious for post midnight munchies. It’s always a highlight and good for a chuckle.
I hardly remember posting that, but now I’m reminded it’ll be interesting to see what happens.
There’s photos from tonight’s team challenge episode early on in this thread, from early January, seems a long time ago
There is a behind-the-scenes look at the MasterClass with the judges and Nigella, in The Project tomorrow night. It was filmed in mid-January, seems a long time ago.
