MasterChef Australia

Enjoying the show so far,it’s a shame there will be no off site team challenges because of the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic .

I reckon there will be at least one off-site team challenge this season, the only difference is that the contestants won’t be able to serve food to the public.

I hope there are more than that. For me that is what the show lacked last season and made it drag towards the end (which I know was out of their control in 2020) but I don’t see any reason they can’t be getting outdoors and cooking at different locations this season.

Based on recent promos, contestants would be cooking at Uluru’s Field of Lights, Apollo Bay and a winery in regional Victoria.

Mystery box was moved from Sunday to Wednesday as part of the format revamp.

When the contestants arrived at the kitchen in tonight’s episode, Melissa said that Brent had been exposed to a COVID-19 hot spot and was now in quarantine until next Sunday’s elimination. This is what she told the contestants:

Unfortunately Brent has been exposed to a COVID hot spot and as a result has to quarantine until he returns for Sunday’s elimination.

That means, he avoids tomorrow’s pressure test.

To make it fair for everyone, Brent must compete in next week’s pressure test no matter what. And, if he survives that, he will continue on in the competition as usual.

What strange times we live in…

I wondered when the incident happened. Could it be linked to one of Melbourne’s clusters from Sydney’s Northern Beaches outbreak?

Why aren’t they in a bubble whilst on the show? Moreso in Covid times?

I assume the contestants lived in separate apartments whilst on the show. In previous seasons they would have stayed in a mansion.

Next Monday’s episode has been revealed: “Meet the Masters Week”.

This opportunity gives the contestants up-close insights into the skills of the best culinary masters in Australia.

I’m assuming there must have been a production break when this happened (possibly over Christmas / New Years). There were a lot of contestants with fresh haircuts etc last night so it felt like they had all just returned. Brent must have been somewhere there was a case but it didn’t put the other contestants or judges at risk because it didn’t happen during filming (where I guess they are more likely to be in a bubble).

Yes, since season 2 there is always a production break over the Christmas / New Year period, when contestants can go home for a few days to spend time with family.

This week’s episodes apparently is part of How to Succeed in MasterChef Week.

EP Marty Benson has given another interview with Mediaweek regarding this season.

Two-time runner-up Laura Sharrad will be guest chef on MasterClass tonight. It was filmed at the Front Lawn of Flemington Racecourse in January this year.

Tonight (May 10) marks the start of Meet the Masters Week in which contestants would meet a guest chef and learn his/her culinary skills before a challenge. The teaser at the end of last night’s elimination said Kirsten Tibballs, Scott Pickett and Curtis Stone would appear.

Monday May 10
This opportunity gives the contestants up-close insights into the skills of the best culinary masters in Australia. Tonight is the team challenge with guest, pasta master Andreas Papadakis, executive chef and co-owner of the award-winning Italian Melbourne CBD restaurants, Tipo 00 and Osteria Ilaria.

Tuesday May 11
The least impressive team from the master team challenge must cook off in this pressure test. Guest chef is Kirsten Tibballs.

Wednesday May 12
The contestants enter the kitchen ready to take on the mystery box challenge set by a Michelin-starred chef, Masahiko Yomoda aka Chef Yomo.

Thursday May 13
In a very special challenge, the top four contestants from the previous challenge meet in the kitchen to be taught a lesson in cooking with fire by guest chef Scott Pickett. The most impressive cook wins immunity.

Sunday May 16
For the final cook of Meet the Masters Week, the bottom four contestants must make a dish that demonstrates how they have mastered a skill, flavour or technique they have learnt across the week. Guess chef is Curtis Stone.

This pressure test seems very intense for this point of the competition.

I felt gutted about Theresa’s exit last night. It was the right time to use her immunity pin when she struggled towards the end of the pressure test. Had she used the pin, Dan probably would have been sent home based on the flaws on his dishes.
Instead, Theresa became the third contestant in MasterChef Australia history to be eliminated while still holding a pin, after Loki Madireddi (Season 10) and Dani Venn (Season 12).

It’s baffling why she didn’t play it. Her whole ‘dish’ was off. Crazy.

Well that was an intense Pressure Test. I just can’t comprehend in any way why Therese didn’t play the pin. She had an obvious major stuff up on every single element. The contestants were telling her to play it and Jock even stood there and pretty much told her to play it. I was certain it was just editing building it up and that it would be payed in the last seconds… but nope.

I reckon she must have had a bit of an ego when it comes to desserts and/or maybe she had overheard Dan had some issues so thought it gave her a shot to survive without playing it. Who knows. I am disappointed that Therese is gone because she was definitely one of the most creative and exciting cooks there. Although not playing the pin made her look pretty full of herself and she got what she deserved really.

That’s now 2 of the immunity pin winners gone I think (Wynona and Therese).

Wynona and Elise both used their pins during a previous elimination challenge. I think Elise played it at the right time, but Wynona used hers a bit too early because the flaw on her dish was not as great as she feared.
