Master Antenna TV Systems (Hospitals, Hotels, etc)

Or the similarly named Fox Showcase channel?

Staying at the Meriton in Sydney tonight. TV in the room has normal FTA with EPG as expected, but I was finding a heap of channels not working.
Turns out that all MPEG-4 channels do not work, so none of the HD ones.

After the usual FTAs in their usual places, they’ve got a bunch of Foxtel channels from 501 to 523, and a channel called “In-House” on 524 which just plays Meriton ads

I wonder if it’s the MATV that’s outdated or the TV?

if the Meritons i’ve stayed in are any indication, it will be the tvs

I stayed at Meriton in Sydney last November and had the same thing. The TVs need an upgrade.

Before travelling to Sydney, I have spent the last few days in Canberra. The TV in my room there had all available FTA as per normal, and two extra channels, which were really weird.

It had:
LCN 1, channel named “S 18”.
LCN 2, channel named “S 20”.

Both channels played really poor quality, low-res movies which had a funny looking watermark in the corner that I didn’t recognise and couldn’t make out due to the low quality of the image. (It definitely wasn’t Foxtel)

The weird thing was, because of this, the TV in my room had two channels on LCN 2, “S 20” and the ABC.

When I first went to Browlee, they had a channel on LCN 100 that played movies (like, on loop for a while) that was simply “INHOUSE”. As this was during 2017, they were currently playing The LEGO Batman Movie at that time.

Yeah, they were in English. No idea where they got the stream from.

Still in Sydney tonight, watching TV at the Meriton tonight and noticed that the clock on the TV goes wrong whenever watching any of the Foxtel channels. Correct time shown on FTA channels, 1 hour 40 minutes behind when watching Foxtel.

@NQCQTV2 could you show me a list of the Foxtel channels?

Oh Good, it was hard to tell from the channel name.

I wonder how many people are actually traveling with DVDs these days. Surely you’d bring a Chromecast or a Laptop?

Or in my case (sometimes), my own TV Set Top Box (partly so I could record bits of the local TV news).

I’m cheating by posting about this in this thread - staying in a BnB outside Glasgow, complete with rabbit ears next to the (tiny) TV

Thus far the worst line-up I’ve seen, as it can only pick up the BBC A and Digital 3&4 multiplexes:

LCN Channel name
1 BBC One Scotland
2 BBC Two Scotland *
3 STV
4 Channel 4
5 Channel 5

33 STV+1
73 Sewing Quarter *

202 CBeebies
231 BBC News
232 BBC Parliament
250 BBC Red Button I

709 BBC Asian Network R
710 BBC World Service R
719 BBC Radio Scotland R
720 BBC Radio nan GĂ idheal R

I - interactive service
R - radio channels

Of note:

  • BBC Two is unavailable as the TV requires a rescan, and even opening the EPG - let alone the tuning menu - requires a PIN! The new BBC Scotland channel replaced Scottish opt-out programming on BBC Two, and now takes the English feed.
  • E4 is on the wrong channel for some reason - it should be on LCN 13, with E4+1 allocated to LCN 28 on one of the Arqiva muxes. Edit: Never mind, that’s wrong
  • Sewing Quarter had no video or audio stream.
  • A number of the BBC Radio channels were off air or broadcast with reduced bandwidth on Freeview until 1am to allow for BBC Alba.

Currently at Dinner Plain and Mt Hotham. The resort seems to have an MATV system cabled to all hotels/chalets that is an MPEG-4 DVB-T retransmission of VAST South. It’s crammed into only 4 Band III channels too. Interesting seeing a couple of the SBS channels for example on different RF channels.

I’m wondering about the MATV equipment used, I wonder if it’s re-encoded or a straight MPEG-4 transport stream retransmitted from the VAST satellite feed without any re-encoding.

One of my befriended teachers at school went on a P&O cruise to Brisbane during the holidays, and she got a “In-Room TV Guide” for me that lists programs shown while she was on cruise. These channels run on an loop so that programs can be shown at various times of the day.

LCN 24: Pacific Flicks 1 (movies, with a lot of 20th Century Fox content)
LCN 25: Taste (“Australian cooking and lifestyle programs”, although they show several ABC comedies too)
LCN 28: Kids and You (Kids programs. In no order they are Wiggle Town, Dance Academy, Five Minutes More, Emma!, Prisoner Zero, The Justine Clarke Show, Peg + Cat, Octonauts, Maurice’s Big Adventures, The WotWots and the night time family movie. Time for an update I guess?)
LCN 30: Pacific Premiere (Very recent movies, including actual out-on-DVD blockbusters)
LCN 39: Nick Jr. (why didn’t she get Nickelodeon?)

It appears they play the “The Letdown” pilot from the ABC Comedy Showroom too often, possibly due to Netflix fulfilling it into a proper series.
For the claim of a “Aussie cooking and lifestyle” channel, the shows are Top Jobs For Dogs, The Ex-PM, Juila Zemiro’s Home Delivery, Foreign Correspondent, The Time Of Our Lives, Ash’s Brush With Fame, Catalyst, Ricketts Lane, Fancy Boy and Backseat Drivers. Is there a lot of content from the goverment-funded stations (ABC and SBS) on both the Kids and Taste channels?

Probably just reflective of how little local content the commercials produce. They can hardly play years old reality programmes can they?

Currently in Brisbane for a work conference, staying in a hotel in the city.

TV in the room has all of the usual FTA channels in their correct places, all up-to-date as well with 9Gem HD showing on LCN 95.

The only thing I found in FTA that I wasn’t expecting was LCN 44 showing “31 Digital” which had a “No signal” slide appear on the screen.

After the FTAs I’ve got:
101 “Fox Sports 1” showing 501
102 “Fox Sports 2” showing 502
109 “Foxsports” showing 503
110 “Foxsports 4” showing 505
111 “Foxsports 5” showing 506
112 “Fox Footy” showing 504
113 “Disney Movies”
114 “Masterpiece”
115 “Action”
116 “Nat Geo Wild”

On 116 there’s no sound and the middle 4:3 part of the programme has been stretch out to fit the 16:9 screen for some reason.

117 “Lifestyles” - Yes, they’ve got an s on the end of the channel name.

118 “Arts”
119 “UKTV”
120 “Universal”
201 “Fox 8”
202 “Sky News”
350 “Movies 1” - showing Foxtel Movies Premiere
351 “Movies 2” - showing Foxtel Movies Family
352 “Fox 2” - this channel is airing Max
353 “Fox 3”

353 is showing Discovery Channel, but like 116, the middle 4:3 section is stretched out to 16:9

That’s it.
After this, the usual FTA audio channels appear.

Interestingly, 201 is occupied by both “Fox 8” and “ABC Jazz”. So when I type 201 into the remote a box appears to select which one I want.

A few quick iPhone snaps of 116 and 353.
You can see text and the channel logos stretched out off the edges of the screen
