Mayweather v McGregor ccores big numbers for foxtel

The most hotly anticipated event in boxing starring the two biggest figures from the world of boxing and MMA, Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Conor McGregor was the second highest pay per view event of all time for Foxtel on Main Event.
The fight which took place yesterday at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas in front of a sold out crowd was the highest grossing and most talked-about fight of all time.

In Australia, the Mayweather McGregor event has become second only to the Mundine Green Pay Per View Fight, held back in 2006.

Floyd Mayweather Jr. cemented his place as the greatest pound-for-pound boxer in history straight victory, as he came out of retirement to take on UFC’s most recognised talent and reigning UFC lightweight champion, Conor McGregor and won by technical knockout, securing his place in boxing history to head into retirement boasting an incredible record of 50th straight victory.

Foxtel Executive Director of Television Brian Walsh said: “The fight that captured the world’s attention was also a huge winner for Foxtel.

Horn Vs Corcoran

Wednesday 13 December at 7.30pm AEDT

Jeff “The Hornet” Horn will defend his WBO World Welterweight title for the first time since defeating Manny Pacquiao in July when he takes on Englishman Gary “Hellraiser” Corcoran in the ‘Battle of Brisbane 2’ on December 13.

The international match-up is evenly poised with Corcoran boasting 17 wins and just the one loss, while Horn has also secured 17 victories and a draw on his way to the title.

An aggressive and destructive fighter, the Hellraiser will put the Hornet’s sting to the test. Corcoran’s no-frills boxing style has evolved from his tough upbringing and the 27-year-old is hell-bent on taking the WBO title back to his “traveller” community in south London.

The man who is synonymous with international boxing, celebrated American ring announcer Michael Buffer, will bring his famed catch phrase “Let’s get ready to rumble” to announce the main four fights.

Colonel Bob Sheridan – who called the historic upset of Pacquaio v Horn at Suncorp Stadium – returns to Brisbane to call the card with Ted Cofie.

Colonel Bob Sheridan has called more than 10,000 fights, including epic bouts like “The Rumble in the Jungle” between Muhammad Ali and George Foreman in Zaire in 1974, “The Thrilla in Manila”, the third and final match between Ali and Joe Frazier in 1975, and the infamous Mike Tyson ear bite fight with Evander Holyfield in 1997.

Ted Cofie was born in Ghana and grew up in England. A former boxer he won the vacant IBO Cruiserweight World Title in 1995. As an accomplished and well respected special comments commentator and a student of the art of boxing, Cofie called the Mundine v Green II fight in Adelaide on Main Event among other events in recent years.

Romero v Rockhold

The Octagon is heading Down Under when UFC arrives in Perth

Former middleweight champion, Luke Rockhold, will face the number one contender, Yoel Romero, for the UFC interim middleweight title for UFC 221 at Perth Arena after Australian Robert Whittaker had to withdraw from the fight last week due to health issues.

33-year-old Rockhold is looking to capture a UFC title after he surrendered the 185-pound belt in his first defence to Michael Bisping. He is coming off a TKO win over David Branch in September.

Romero, a former Cuban Olympic silver medallist wrestler, had been scheduled to fight Branch at a UFC Fight Night event on February 24 after last losing to Whittaker for the interim title last July. Prior to that loss, Romero had won eight in a row, including six by knockout.

Featuring in the co-main event is Oceania’s hardest hitting and decorated combat sports legend Mark Hunt (fighting out of Sydney). Coming off a “Fight of the Night” performance last June in his native New Zealand, Hunt will trade leather with young and hungry slugger, Chicago’s Curtis Blaydes currently ranked number nine in the heavyweight division.

The Sunday Telegraph reports Foxtel will show two fights on pay-per-view on the same day for the first time. Both Jeff Horn’s fight against Terence Crawford and UFC 225: Whittaker vs. Romero 2 will be shown on June 10 Australian time. UFC Middleweight Championship bout between current champion Robert “The Reaper” Whittaker and former interim title challenger Yoel “Soldier of God” Romero LIVE from Chicago, June 10.

Having previously met in July 2017 at UFC 213, Whittaker won the vacant interim title via a unanimous decision, before being promoted to undisputed champion. Whittaker was supposed to defend his title in February in Perth against Luke Rockhold at UFC 221 before having to withdraw from the card due to health issues.

Now back to full health, Whittaker is offering Romero a chance for redemption in Chicago at UFC 225.

It was announced last night that WWE Super Show-Down would be held at the MCG on Saturday, October 6, one week after the AFL Grand Final. It will be the biggest WWE event in Australia. Foxtel is a sponsor and I reckon it will be broadcast locally on Main Event only.

My first thought on hearing the result was for the poor bastards who were fleeced $59.95 by Foxtel for less than two minutes of entertainment. Perhaps it was worth it to them to see trash talking Mundine put on his arse in the first round.
