That’s brilliant!!
Driving online audience and revenue for NEC.
That was the point of the show right? To tap into the younger demographics viewing habits. It also shows how a lot of people like to binge watch these days. The fact that the season is over but the first episode is still getting so many views really highlights that. This was a good test for probably how the future of TV is going to be as networks rely more and more on streaming.
Absolutely, worth a share on here also with many members questioning the viability of an expensive format co-commission for a multi-channel and their streaming / catch up service and how they can monetise it accordingly.
Yep. The number of youtube views for videos was pretty incredible too, clearly there was some interest with the UK audience. I wonder if they can sell it off to the UK market and tap into that somehow. That’s another way of generating revenue too.
On the other hand, there was an article in The Australian today which paints a different picture - to quote part of it:
Nine has spun its Love Island experiment — which targeted a niche audience of young viewers on its linear multichannel 9Go, 9Now streaming platform and YouTube — as a market-leading success story that “smashes the model for cross-platform television”.
However, media buyers say the show failed to deliver on expectations touted by Nine ahead of the show’s launch.
One agency source said the network had hoped for Love Island’s ratings to be as much as 50 per cent higher for linear broadcast and “significantly higher” for online streaming and catch-up viewing.
“I don’t think they’re anywhere near what they wanted to see,” the unnamed source said.
I guess you can look at it both ways. But at the end of the day if nine do another season they must have seen it as a success and it must have made a profit or they wouldn’t just keep it going. And from the fact they mentioned a second season I would suggest they considered it a success. It really doesn’t matter what others think or suggest.
It cost $10m to make.
Cheaper than Big Brother! Ha
Is $10million a lot in TV terms? I have no idea. I thought it wouldn’t be that expensive given the house was already set up but the rights to the format might have been what cost a lot. I guess having a production team overseas also increases costs too.
I heard 30m. But 10m is extremely cheap.
Well it works out to 300,000 per episode. I think that is quite cheap. To air an episode of Big Bang would cost over 100,000 so that would be 200,000 for an hour.
The advertiser perspective is what matters ultimately, not what the network says. And if (I know this is a stretch) the Australian is correct, then Love Island isn’t the success Nine is portraying it as.
The viewer figures were underwhelming. They tout the YouTube views but also say YouTube views don’t make them enough money. From my experience, 9Now has less capacity to serve ads so reduced income potential from get go. I think it’s a good experiment Nine have conducted but if season two is commissioned, they may need to make some changes to better meet the needs of advertisers and their bottom line.
They’ve made a loss on the investment but I guess they’ll need to look at whether they can make money on this sort of venture in the future.
Really? I think it would be the networks. Not all advertisers are going to get what they want out of it but if networks can sell their show then its up to them whether they think its successful or not. And how does the Australian actually know if they didn’t make money off it? We don’t actually have any idea of the advertisers that would want product placement etc. in the show. Look at that spa day episode. That would have had product placement in it. An episode full of your product would have cost a mint.
Love Island UK once again proving to be popular with viewers on 9Now with the latest streaming ratings showing Love Island UK taking up 7 of the top 10 most streamed shows.
It was interesting to hear Tim Worner’s take on Love Island.
Yeah?
What the cheif executive of their direct opposition? Yeah would be riveting and totally unbiased.
And looking at a bit of the comment its funny he says love island isnt the future when his network commissioned yummy mummies exclusively for digital…
Dave Hughes can use that line in next year’s Logies.
