Long distance television

What does Myswitch show for your address for Melbourne?

If “Variable” or better, and you have a high gain antenna, then I think you have a reasonable chance.

It says None on Myswitch but Marginal on TXA.

All Melbourne ABC/SBS Stations were however coming through without static at the location where I’ll be setting it up.

Hoping to book installation this friday

I tend to agree.

Very much so.

So tomorrow I get my new antenna fitted to receive metro Melbourne TV Channels and my local antenna gets connected to my other outlet… I believe the brand of antenna they mentioned was Hills but I cannot be certain… Definitely cannot remember the model number… They anticipate that the Metro signals will be continually available and can go to two outlets in my household… which would be amazing… So in 24 hours time I’ll hopefully be adding to this forum with pictures of my TV Guide with all LCNs except 4, 4x taken up… :crossed_fingers: :crossed_fingers: :crossed_fingers:

Good luck!
It’s great having both metro and regional TV reception.
So says the TV geek in me.

Can’t agree more @Radiohead. Saw the system at a hotel near Newcastle a few years back and that’s what sprung the idea in my mind. Loved being able to watch news on (shameful) Win Mappy and then watching prime time on 10

So, just had the signal test for Metro Signal done, Bit of a Good News Bad News situation.

Bad News is that the Signal was at 40% which wasn’t high enough for them to slap the antenna on at 2 metres, the resultant of that would’ve been a very pixelated picture.

Good News is there was a signal and they can do a higher mast and will come back when it isn’t as windy.

So despite last nights DX…

Still invested in Metro-Regional System and like I said we’re gonna try a higher mast in the coming days.

Interesting to know the antenna type plus amp and whether you went for a splitter to get FM as well.

I’ve found that 40% signal can work but it comes down to the “signal quality” that can be key.

This is a low power 5kw relay station about 100 k from me (WIN at Nambour - I don’t use it because there are better signals). Despite the less than optimal signal strength the picture is perfect.

Was a standard VHF antenna being used to measure signal. The quality was around 10% apparently. But he said if I wait a few weeks for their new tall masts then it’ll be worth the wait. I asked about an amplifier and he said it’ll fix the strength but not the quality. Not sure I believe that but still…

I’ll be getting a metro antenna one way or another.

don’t get me wrong. but couldn’t you just stream the Melbourne channels? that’s what i do after watching win news

That’s correct - the signal strength can be improved with an amplifier but you need a better signal - higher mast or more directional antenna - to improve the quality.

I could but it is boring. The whole point is to DX

So just got word back that they now want an 8 metre mast on top of my already 5m high shed which is ridiculous. So I’ve had a new idea… Get an antenna and like a tripod type thing and put it at the high point of the yard (I live on a hill.) Anyone recommend a good antenna for this sort of thing?

What’s your internet connection like? If it’s decent I’d suggest to ditch the antenna idea and just stream the Melbourne channels online. Saves a lot of money and mucking about IMO.

The antenna shouldn’t matter whether it’s on a mast or tripod.

How far away is the high point of the yard from your house?

If it means having say 20 metre cable run from there back to your TV, you may have an issue with signal loss.

About 3 metres to the high point.
