Agree, that bottom one has elements that look to be too wide even for FM.
HF (shortwave) log periodic. A very common ham installation. There’s a massive one on the corner of King Georges Road and Bridge Street in Penshurst that’s a local landmark.
Check out this recording of GLV8 (VHF 8) recorded from Pakenham Victoria, awesome picture and shows the charm of Regional Television pre aggregation.
Bridge Hotel in Castlemaine with a long-distance TV setup, tallest antenna was a Band I designed to receive ATV0 (and later SBS0) Melbourne, and below it a Band III to receive BTV6 Ballarat. Below it (not in view) was a vertical VHF Band I & III to receive local channels 1 & 8 pre-analog switch off, and a local UHF.
Odd to see a fringe metro antenna set up for Channel 0, but not for 7 and 9.
Having a local Channel 8 can make it hard to receive 7 and 9 depending on local conditions. Analogue signals on adjacent channels cause interference.
This is a band scan that shows what analogue long distance reception was like for me in Brisbane. It is the same antenna I still use for the north - UHF phased array. Stations are low to medium power from 4 different sites.
2 years today since my first DX of Mildura in Renmark. Was actually showing up with no service this morning, would’ve been funny if it did lock on
Think it might’ve been Broken Hill trying to come in since Adelaide and Mildura usually lock on when the signal is that low
Just decided to pop a northern Central Coast location into Myswitch to see what it says about reception, and was surprised to see Illawarra even come up as an option, also given they share the same frequencies as Newcastle.
Yeah I don’t think I’d trust MySwitch; that website hasn’t been maintained in years.
Coverage of existing transmitters won’t really have changed much over time.
Not sure if they’ve been adding in any new TXs though.
Some info like networks eg. WIN being Nine is out of date though.
Don’t think the site has been updated since around 2016
A typical antenna setup in Mt Gambier SA. The top VHF antenna receives signals from the Mt Dundas transmitter in Victoria. The bottom UHF antenna receives local signals from Mt Burr transmitter. The VHF part of the antenna used to receive old analogue signals the ABC on Channel 1 & SES8/WIN SA on Channel 8.
The Mt Dundas/Western Victoria transmitter is meant to be picked up without any problems in Mount Gambier, despite Mount Gambier being right on the outside of the coverage zone on Myswitch
The Myswitch coverage maps tend to be conservative.
Probably to discourage people from watching out of area stations with most programs 30 minutes earlier
And to reduce complaints from viewers who “think” they should be able to watch out of area stations.
