If it wasn’t for someone posting about it here, I wouldn’t have known about the show
Yep, but the catch up numbers were much bigger - but that wasn’t the reason. The simple fact is I have a lot of other things going on and it was costing me money to make. I liked doing it, it was a fun hobby.
No, I gave my reasons on the show. Look, I know people here on MediaSpy don;t like me, and that’s ok… but we gave something a go and couldn’t find a way of making money. We tried… and that’s something I will NEVER stop doing. You can bitch from the sidelines but I’ve never been afraid to put myself out there - so judge as you please.
There are plenty of free internet audio and video podcssts that solicit subscriptions from the audience. One particular YouTube talk show I watch that’s made in North Dakota comes out a couple of times a week and regularly gets 15,000 to 30,000 views. Not big by any means, but the revenue from the ads and subscriptions cover the cost.
That’s a bit mean, isn’t it. I didn’t base the show on my own profile, we tried to build something from the ground up – but it’s impossible without a big company supporting you for marketing and promotion.
Look what’s happening in the podcast space, independent producers are being squeezed out by companies who can cross promote their content and pay for marketing.
I’m lucky in that I have two podcasts well established in TVBB and Monsters Who Murder. In fact the true crime podcast drives a lot of revenue for me, but I have been guilty of neglecting that for the ARR Show, which was part of the reason I had to make this decision.
You know, keep the punches coming, but it really is this kind of attitude which drives people who are in the industry away from this site.
Someone asked about the future of LIVE+ and the answer is I don;t know. There has been plenty of interest, but no-one has put money down on the table (well, some have but we haven;t hit the target).
In my conversations across the media spectrum they can all see where it is going and that we are ahead of the game, but they’re just not ready to jump ship and invest in the future.
It’s a shame I don’t personally have the money, because I would put it where my mouth is.
But anyway… I did it to myself by popping in to take a look. My fault for letting the haters win I guess.
Did you think of asking for subscriptions? As I wrote above, it can work for small operations.
What I don’t understand Rob is the USP for Live+.
Based on the initial announcement and discussions here in January, there are only three shows slated for launch. One of those is now about to wrap up, and has had limited interest outside this forum while being made available as a free, easily accessible product. How would the show have fared behind a paywall when you have <1,000 concurrent streams as it stands?
The other two shows don’t yet exist as video products. While I don’t doubt the success of the true crime podcast, as you’d no doubt be aware on demand video and podcasting are two completely different beasts. That said, I think it could be a great companion piece to the podcast and I’m sure you will explore this somehow.
Feel free to correct me if I’ve made any wrong assertions here, but I can’t imagine we’ve been any more critical than a potential investor would have been (or will in the future).
Sure! I don’t doubt that. I’m saying for something that has as much effort put in to be live, it wasn’t worth it. It would have possibly worked better if it was pre produced and then released. That’s my point.
I have to hand it to you for sticking it out. Cast changes, working with others schedules etc. good work
I did consider it and that might be something for down the track but at this stage I need to focus my energies on other things.
I didn’t release all the details publicly on what content LIVE+ would have. Serious investors have been briefed and there have been a few occasions where we came close to closing the deal. Radio stations in particular see the benefit of going down this path but, once again, they;re just not ready.
The ARR show could still be part of the streaming service if it happens, everyone involved in the production wants it to continue - I am the problem at the moment due to lack of time.
As a side note, my true crime podcast is now doing a video version and subscriptions are going through the roof. It has proven to be a great driver of additional subscriptions plus we have a patreon page which offers different tiers.
I think everyone involved got something out of it. This show has actually led me into radio presenting which is not something I ever considered. 4BC have been extremely generous with me and say they want me to fill in on more shifts (I have done two full weekends now as a fill in presenter).
While I’m not expecting anything, I have really enjoyed the intimacy of radio and talking directly to listeners (and getting the chance to air my views).
So what does the future hold - I don;t know.
I have a lot of fingers in many pies (a lot of which is not publicly known) but I have to start making some tough decisions on which path(s) I follow.
I’m proud of what we did with the BRR and ARR show. I think there were people expecting us to fail at the get-go, but we learnt some lessons and evolved along the way.
With such a small team it was a massive feat and we’ve had an amazing roll call of guests. Stories from the show have made it into major news publications and we’ve made a lot of noise.
I know I and the show are not for everyone… and that’s ok. But as I said before, I will never regret giving anything a go. I have always been known for sticking my head up - even if that means it sometimes gets chopped off.
Why don;t you all take a look at the final episode and see what we’ve done – we won;t be shy in showing the good times, the guests… and the many bloopers!
Thanks to those who have shown kindness and I never have a problem answering serious questions - its those who just want to take pot shots I have an issue with.
X
If it is any consolation, I don’t get the hate and just want to say that whilst I didn’t watch ARR Show (sorry, just soooo much content I can’t get to all of it) the TVBB podcast is my absolute fave, don’t miss an episode and look forward to it every week
@blackbox I applaud you for having a fine good crack at it. Not many people would be game enough to do what you’ve done. Well done on the all the episodes. Great work.
Just putting this out there… Any criticisms are just that, they aren’t personal, and just because someone posts here, doesn’t mean their projects should be immune from fair criticism and commentary. This seems to be an ongoing issue for 6 News, Ticker and blackbox projects.
I welcome any & all criticism.
Unfortunately a few have serious glass jaws.
Sorry, but some of the things said on this forum are of a personal nature and not based on the product.
I’m happy to have a back and forth about what I do, but many times I have had personal attacks
You can say I have a glass jaw, which might be true, but don’t rewrite the facts.
Why would posters here have a personal vendetta against you? I’ve not seen anything overly personal, especially compared to people’s posts about personalities who don’t post here. I have great respect for you, but I also don’t think BRR show was very good. We all have our own views, it’s not like anything posted here is ever of any consequence anyway.
