KIIS Network

Well good luck trying to get ARN to relaunch 4KQ onto FM.

Apparently, KIIS 97.3 Brisbane has dropped its 80s to Now format, now going for the Top 40 hit music format and slightly sped up songs just like Sydney and Melbourne. No more Classic Hits, just very much the latest and greatest hits, with a few KIIStory throwbacks going back to around the mid-late 90s. Not too long now and Kyle & Jackie O will replace Robin & Kip for Breakfast.

Get ready Brisbane, KIIS 97.3 is about to essentially become a repeater of KYLE 1065 Sydney, with the exception of the late night Zach & Dom program (which comes out of Brisbane), some local advertisements and station IDs - but other than that, there will be no more local, maybe except for the station’s competitions, most of which will probably be coming out of North Sydney where the KIIS Network is now headquartered.

As of present, the pre-recorded voiceovers doing the idents for KIIS 97.3 are now that of the Sydney and Melbourne stations, but they’re still announcing the local frequency. Music airing on the station at the moment consists of Taylor Swift, Sabrina Carpenter and even Dua Lipa. Audio for the Station ID attached here.

Yep, Melbourne has made up their own mind. They want more Nova 100 for Jase & Lauren, more Fox FM for Fifi, Fev & Nick, and certainly more Gold for Christian O’Connell, and less KYLE 101.1 shoved down their throats - on the FM band. On the AM band though, 3AW is still king for talkback, No.1 in the Melbourne radio ratings overall.

Sigh… they seem to think Kyle and Jackie O is the answer to everything… we’ve already seen that Sydney can’t support 3 hit music stations, what hope does Brisbane have? Triple M and 4BH are the only winners here.

they seem to be happy with getting a 5 share and not spending money in local markets. It’s a race to the bottom.

Totally. What I don’t get is why Nova Ent put up with it. I know ARN manages 97.3 but as a 50% owner surely NE has some say. Surely they can’t be happy with the direction of 97.3

Maybe it’s just the reverse of what happens in Perth with 93.7, where NE controls that and ARN has a 50% stake in that which competes with ARNs 96fm?

Yes but 96fm doesn’t directly compete with Nova in Perth with the same format. 96 at least targets a different audience (like 97.3 used to).

ARN have turned 97.3 into a direct clone/competitor to Nova in Brisbane

Mix102.3 Adelaide still carries some sort of 80s to Now format as of present, albeit having the KIIS look. Their station IDs heard on the station also carry the KIIS voiceovers heard on that of the Sydney and Melbourne (and now Brisbane) stations.

Won’t be too long now and they too will perhaps change to KIIS and change their music format to Top 40 and play slightly sped up songs.

SAFM are now using the Adelaide’s #1 Hit Music Station positioner, so it’ll sound odd if/when Mix102.3 use it.

What happened to Pedro?

As for KIIS97.3, it’s as if Robin & Kip are drilling it to the ground, so when they do finally get the axe for K&J, the Sydney duo will have an extremely poor lead-in to their show.

They’d be better off keeping the ratings (and programming) consistent with what has made the station a success in the past.

Sadly, 97.3FM has not been the same since Barry Drinkwater left as CD.

Kyle and Jackie O’s Intern Pete will host Keith’s iHeartLive performance on September 2. Plus, Keith himself will take over K&JO live on Tuesday, September 3 as the next ‘Kyle & Jackie O’s Songbook’ artist.

I wonder of KJ will be on air on a public holiday Monday in NSW in October? Coz Victoria will not be getting a long weekend around 1st week of October.

They’ll probably just air a best bits show.

Maybe they should do a show in Melbourne on that day…

And that right there is the reason why K&J haven’t succeeded yet in Melbourne.

Their approach is to, “just keep doing what they’re doing”, rather than even try to dominate a new market.

There is only so much TV and digital marketing that can be done before you actually need to physically be in that market to win.

Melbournians know it’s a Sydney show. And in one of the country’s biggest cities, listeners probably do want to hear local announcers.

Didn’t K&J give it to 2DayFM when their announcers weren’t even in the state?

Like I’ve mentioned before, all they have done is just installed a “Sydney” breakfast show into Melbourne without changing anything.

Which is essentially what BOG have done with 2HD’s Richard King beaming into 2SM Sydney (complete with richard@2hd.com.au email address).
