Nova’s only saving grace in Sydney are the perennial strugglers, the SCA duo that is 2DAY and Triple M.
Anything above a 7 would be regarded as a good result considering how competitive the market are in Syd and Melb.
106.5 could’ve been called anything and it would’ve still succeeded purely because of K&J.
As previous reports have stated, Kyle was the one who insisted on the KIIS rebrand as part of his move to ARN.
To this day, I still wonder what it would’ve been like if K&J were on Mix106.5 instead of KIIS106.5. It probably would’ve been just as successful, but with a fair bit of baggage considering Kyle would constantly rubbish Mix when he was at 2Day.
Which was probably why he insisted on the rebrand as part his move.
I recall hearing him constantly deny in late 2013 that he was going to MIX.
The thing is, any sort of branding would have worked with K&J heading it up.
I don’t understand why they think they need to have an Americanised brand and American voice overs for their promos. Do they really think that attracts listeners?
I agree. If they wanted to refresh it a bit I’ve always thought The Mix would have worked. Would have worked better for the rest of the network too. 101.1 The Mix, 97.3 FM with The Mix is a secondary positioner, and 102.3 The Mix. It kinda works for stations drifting towards Hot AC from AC.
Agree, it’s a big turn off for me… that “KIIS 1 oh 6 fiveeeeee” American voice is nauseating.
Particularly weird when they use obvious Australian terms or slang but it’s in an American voice. It’s jarring. It’s really odd when you hear Kyle says that he supports Australian music artists but then they don’t use Australian voice artists.
KIIS 101.1 is a much better radio station than Mix. KIIS is Hot Ac whereas mix was AC or Soft-Ac (or Melbourne’s Smooth Mix back in 2005 when Vega launched ).
Not only do the cume and ratings reflect this, it also looks better and doesn’t sound as daggy.
Meanwhile , I can only guess the reason for 973 struggling in Brisbane was the chopping and changing around breakfast. Robbin, Terry and Bob were powerhouses a few years back, it’s all seemed to have gone downhill since that show was broken up. The music doesn’t sound a whole lot different than it did before the change to KIIS.
It’s probably an Australian voice artist, just with a really cringy American fake accent!
Further to the discussion in the Metro Ratings forum, I feel the brand Mix would/could still sound just as hot & relevant as Hit/KIIS/Nova.
IMO the word Mix still holds currency and relevance. Especially in this time where most CHR stations are turning to older tracks for more ‘variety’.
You’re all saying that you don’t like the KIIS name as it’s too American, is it just because of how it’s spelt or why exactly, you all say you liked MIX better, but have you forgotten that too was lifted entirely from a US station of the same name in Baltimore (WWMX) I think it was, including the logo they used at the time, with ARN just changing the colours for here?
also that “Kiss” as a word (not the spelling) has been a UK radio station brand forever.
One other thing that that makes KIIS sound too American to me is not just the spelling, it’s also because it’s 4 letters and starts with a K (or a W) as most American callsigns are eg. Kxxx or Wxxx.
Like when KROQ branding appeared in Australia - what did the K stand for and why did the name need to be restricted to 4 letters as in the US call sign.
I believe they’re Americans because they sometimes mispronounce Australian words. An Australian would at least recognise these Australianisms.
The recent one I can recall is when they had some sort of breakfast promotion and were using the word brekkie but the way the American was saying it just sounded all kinds of wrong.
Same with the iheartradio jingle always being an American voice.
Yeah but that wont mean anything to the average punter. Theyll just think KIIS spelt their name differently, like parents spell their averagely named kid differently
Does America have a 2SM or 2GB?
If it was spelt Kiss then that’d make sense. It’s clear the name KIIS is based on the US call signs (as mentioned above), hence making it a very American brand.
At least Mix, Nova and Smooth are all spelt correctly, making them more relatable to the Australian audience.
KIIS is a stupid name
