Kayo Sports

Took me back to the login page when first opened the app. Just closed it and tried again, and it worked fine

Remained online for me tonight (probably could’ve used an outage during that game tbh) but a lot of complaints on social media about the downtime and/or users unable to log in.

Not a good luck for it to be down so long. I wonder if the severs couldn’t cope with the demand?

I tried it just to see what happens. Couldn’t get any streams to work in Kayo but I could log in. Watch.Foxtel most of the streams were working but with an error message that you close and it works. But some I noticed wasn’t working. OnDemand I didn’t try.

I had the same issue with Binge, so it appears to be a widespread problem.

Annoying new green line now on Kayo, next to the FOX Sports bug. There’s speculation this is similar to the beer glass on venue feeds, so FOXTEL inspectors can check pubs are paying for commercial feeds.

Why don’t they simply not put the FOX Sports and the channel number on the Kayo feeds, and put Kayo on instead?

Probably involves a lot more work than ‘simply’.

The feeds would be piped from Fox with the on screen furniture already, adding a green mark on Kayo’s behalf - is pretty straightforward.

The Foxtel Go feed has a black pixel next to the channel bug, still annoying.

I watched some of the free Kayo streams earlier and strangely there was no green line.

Not overly strange - they won’t be worried about pub operators showing events which are free anyway. it’s to find those using a residential membership rather than a commercial licence which they are wanting to shut down.

I’m wondering if the black dot on Foxtel Go is related to what seems to be the start of individual commercial insertion at the client end this weekend, to make it easier for Foxtel engineers to identify which content they’re seeing.

I’m watching Fox Footy via Foxtel Go on a Foxtel Now box and have noticed a handful of commercial breaks have contained visibly different commercials (a NSW Government gambling awareness ad being the most noticeable) and these commercials lack the black dot and score graphic, and have a frame or two of black between each one. At the end of the inserted set there’s a full screen “Foxtel - we’ll be right back” graphic for 10-15 sec until it can time back in to the Fox Footy feed at the start of the next commercial or promo, at which point the dot and score graphic are back.

The black dot would certainly help for identifying the feed and inserted commercials outside live games when there are no other graphics normally sitting over the breaks.

This might explain why my Foxtel Now box was getting stuck on freeze frames of the end of seemingly random commercials a couple weekends ago if they were starting to test commercial insertion and it wasn’t quite working properly.

At a guess, it seems like something Foxtel could be trying ahead of the rollout of the IQ5 boxes. Being able to localise/personalise commercials would be a great way to increase commercial revenue once most of the subscriber base is on IP streams rather than satellite/cable.

It’s looking like Optus has been recently testing this method for VAST as well.

I think we’re looking at the beginning of the future of linear TV here. Nationalised feeds with connected end-user equipment inserting ads. Look no further than TCL, LG, Samsung branded TVs and how they are now delivering their own diverse IPTV services using this method. They have the potential to offer more localised advertising than traditional linear services.

Targeted ads is one of the promises of ATSC 3.0 in the USA.

Woo!

Quick question. Can I access finals on Kayo this weekend? Or is it only available on 7?
