Junior MasterChef

I tuned into a bit of this last night. I still stand by children being annoying on TV. But there was definitely less annoying kids on this. And they seem to know how to cook. Andy seems just as annoying as he is in the original format though. I still think they could have done with Poh rather than Andy in this format.

I’ve met Poh in real life (briefly) before and let’s just say that she would be fantastic on Junior Masterchef. Her personality would work really well with kids.

Andy is still pretty good but he seems a lot more casual and chill in terms of personality compared to the more classy Melissa and Jock which is quite an obvious contrast on screen.

As for those kids, they put my personal cooking (even though I’ve cooked for myself to 6 years now) to shame.

Yes they can

Having Poh on Junior MC would be pretty cool, but still Andy’s fine to have

Ryan, Porsha and Etka were farewelled from the show last night. While it was no surprise that Etka was sent home because the meat filling in his samsa was dry (he left it to cook while going to pantry for more ingredients), I think Ryan and Porsha were very unlucky. The marinade in Ryan’s Korean chicken lacked salt (he did put in soy sauce which includes salt) while the judges reckoned Porsha didn’t show enough techniques in making a dessert nacho. If only one contestant was to be eliminated, Ryan and Porsha might have survived.

It is a nice gesture from the producers to give each of the eliminated contestants a Sunbeam mixer though.

I stopped watching halfway through the first episode as the kids format just didn’t appeal to me but decided to give it another go last night and I’m glad that I did. I enjoyed it. The kids aren’t as annoying as I initially thought, the quality of cooking is great and I particularly love that Ben kid. He is so funny and adorable. I reckon for as long as he is there I will keep watching.

Ben is holding a virtual cooking class via Zoom for senior citizens of Bendigo tomorrow (October 15).

Why did they get rid of 3 contestants straight up?

Yeah I thought it’s strange too. Shouldn’t it just be one a week?

Unless they’ve had to rush things because of the gradual implementation of restrictions.

I’m guessing it’s just a short run series as it has always been (17eps S1, 21eps S2). If it keeps to roughly the same format it will finish at the end of the ratings period for the year.

It won’t be that many episodes if they get rid of 3 children every week. Did they eliminate 3 in the one episode in previous seasons?

In season 1, which ran on a points system, four contestants were eliminated at the end of week 5 and week 7.
In season 2, four contestants were sent home at the end of week 4, 6 and 8.
According to synopsis on 10Play online guide, two more kids will be eliminated at the end of next Tuesday’s episode.

It’s because they are kids… they don’t want to single them out and eliminate one at once. It was the same with the last Junior MasterChef there were always at least 2 going at every elimination.

Plus it’s a short run season. Even if they get rid of 2 or 3 per week it will still go for 4-5 weeks.

I didn’t realise they did this every year.

They don’t but there have been a couple previous seasons of it. The last version of it was a few years ago.

Might have been better to only eliminate two the first week, so more stayed longer.

How do the ratings of this show compare to the first season?

On numbers alone they are well down on season 2 in 2011.

Who compares ratings of a show today to a show 10 years ago? We know FTA had far bigger audiences back then. Season 1 of Junior Mastery was huge but season 2 lost a lot of its audience.

I notice that the kids in this season were using normal stainless steel knives instead of plastic knives in the first two seasons.
