Right now, Alan Carter is solo anchoring the 5:30 and 6:00 newscasts on Global Toronto. Tracy Tong appears to be the primary relief presenter. Both Tracy and Alan co-anchored the station’s municipal election night coverage.

Toronto is a market dominated by Bell Media. The company owns the #1 local TV station (CFTO/CTV Toronto), the extremely popular 24-hour regional cable news channel (CP24), and the most listened to news/talk radio station (CFRB NewsTalk 1010). Bell also has the national CTV News Channel and BNN Bloomberg operating out of Toronto.

I am not sure how the other stations rank, but they are probably fighting for scraps over there. I am guessing Citytv is #2 (BT and CityPulse/CityNews still have relatively strong viewership), then Global or CBC, then CHCH.

i-Cable Group in Hong Kong launched Hoy Infotainment (as in Information and Entertainment) on FTA Ch.78 back in November last year, becoming the city’s second 24/7 news channel. This was the moment it started:

The opening is a generic one in starting Lunchtime News, signed news report and news bulletins.

Programme junction and ident before morning news, without ads in between:

The lower thirds start with news headlines in red, before swiping to blue COVID info, looping back and forth. Financial indices are added to the bar later:

The disclaimer card for opinions:

There’s also a new look for Newsroom Live at 1900, the flagship programme of the channel. Ironically through Cable TV’s News Channel, but you get the idea:

And finally, also on News Channel with old graphics intact, Newsroom Live Nighttime:

Compared to HoyTV (Ch.77)'s abysmal ratings, Ch.78 was more anticipated as a worthy alternative to TVB News, in the field of 24/7 news channels.

All of this is happening as i-Cable decides to wind down its cable offerings in favor of OTA as noted in this wide-ranging story.

Global in Canada is rolling out a new virtual set across the network this morning. Here are some shots of the new set from Toronto, Montreal, Halifax, and Edmonton.

Sooo ugly. Virtual sets are the worst, the only decent one is ITV NEWS.

What is it with virtual sets having ghastly desks?

Revolting. Just give them decent sets, especially in some of the markets where Global rates well.

A lot of their branding does come across as “cheap.” Wonder if the average viewer also sees this and chooses to get news elsewhere? Who knows

Still beats Seven Perth.

South Korea’s KBS has unveiled a new look for its newscasts, coinciding with the 50th anniversary of its transition from state media into a fully fledged PSB; the changes, which debuted on its main news hour KBS News 9, include a new opening title sequence, a completely new set and new music (a remix of the previous 2019 theme). The supers and other graphics haven’t substantially changed, but they were tweaked to reflect the changes. Another big change: the opening titles now render the program name in English rather than in Korean; the 특집 in the title card means Special Edition.

This change is part of a larger, gradual relaunch of all of KBS’ brands, which are also rebranding to reflect the anniversary; the existing KBS word mark from 1984 will be retained.

Austria’s PSB ORF has relaunched its main newscast Zeit im Bild (or ZIB for short). This happens as the broadcaster, in a cost-cutting measure, centralised the newsrooms of all its platforms into a new wing of the ORF headquarters, located in the Küniglberg valley in Vienna, where already most of its services come; its main national radio stations, Ö1 and Hitradio Ö3, also made the move. The new set was designed by Veech x Veech, ORF’s architect/set designer of record, with displays provided by ETC and lighting from Kino Flo.

Graphically, the 2020 graphics and music (which were a tweak of a previous batch from 2018, and have been very consistent with the simple earth imagery and clean graphic designs used since the Neville Brody rebrand back in 1993) have been carried over with minor tweaks, including the fact they now use the ORF Universal font, designed by Saffron Brand Consultants (which is working on a full repositioning project of ORF’s digital service, ORF On, with the font already used by some of the new offerings) instead of Gotham Narrow. There is also the integration of new AR elements. Additionally, ORF 1’s ZIB broadcasts lost their own identity (this had been the case since 2007 too) and have been brought back within the main ZIB brand, with ZIB Nacht being renamed back to ZIB 3.

Worth noting too that the previous studio, used since 2002 (with the set design dating from 2007, when ORF switched to widescreen) isn’t going offline, with the sports service taking seat there. The studio formerly used by ORF 1’s broadcasts is also remaining in use, with its younger-skewing infotainment shows still based in that studio.

The 2019 theme and intro was certainly a nice change, but they ended up stuck with being associated with a “Your Covid-19 News HQ” (very roughly) sub-tag on them for the longest time, so I’m not surprised that they changed them as things are loosening up, and the 50th anniversary of its “public service” status is very much as good a reason as any!

I like the music remix - and that extended intro gave us a good chunk of it - but I also liked how understated the old look and sound was too - authoritative without having be wound up into a dance mix or something like MBC or SBS do. And of course, the long shot on the video wall in the intro to bring them closer to their commercial rivals (who at least have a reason to do it; they need to go through the sponsor list for the bulletin)… seems to be a Korean main-news staple these days.

TVN in Chile launched a unified look across their newscasts in mid-February, replacing the ones used since 2021.

Morning news 24AM:

Lunchtime news 24 Tarde:

Primetime news 24 Horas Central:

Their late night newscast, Medianoche, slightly broke free of the style.

[Update] They stopped livestreaming the programme on Youtube at the time, that’s why I got no footage of it; but now, here it is:

And they seemingly got a new studio in April, alongside a more traditional form of reporting:

Meanwhile, CTV News Channel in Canada debuted a new flat package:

C5N, Argentina. At the end of February, coinciding with the launch of a new, entertainment-focused prime time schedule, the channel debuted new graphics, which look very decent compared to the monstrosity of its main rival, Todo Noticias.

However, the channel, which is known for its over reliance on tabloid journalism (although with a more polished production than its similar rival, Crónica TV, which has retained its grittier, lo-fi and often irreverent style of covering news), has introduced a new way to cover important breaking news: Alerta Máxima; this level of overboard branding hits a new low on Argentinian TV news.

Here is an extended montage of the highlights from the inaugural edition in the new set:

Speaking of which, almost instantly, Korean internet users quickly compared the new look and set with those of SBS 8 News, due to its striking similarities in the opening style, the set design and also the long shot placeholder. See for yourself:

Worth noting KBS1 is a strictly public-service channel focusing on news, information and cultural programming (though it airs a limited amount of entertainment shows and K-dramas), being forbidden to air commercials other than public service announcements (its sister KBS2, which is more entertainment-focused, is permitted to do so, but, as with its rivals, can’t interrupt shows and most air them between these, or through an underwritten sponsor list before the show begins), so the long studio shot is just for graphics sake.

Since the following Monday after the debut, most of KBS’ news programming airing on KBS1 has taken seat at the new studio set. However, all of these programs still use their 2019 title cards and music themes (some of which have even been used since the 90s), with KBS News 9 being the only program with new openers and graphics.

KBS News Plaza (morning news):

KBS News 12 (news at noon):

KBS News (short news bulletins scattered on the schedule, this is the 2pm update):

KBS News 5 (early evening newscast):

KBS News 7 (regional newsmagazine). This program didn’t make the move to the new studio as rehearsals for KBS News 9 are underway, instead using the secondary studio used regularly for KBS2’s newscasts, to standardize the styling with the local centres, which also have a break-in slot:

KBS News 9 in a normal weekday edition. With the new set, the headlines segment has been dropped with just a title sequence starting the show and into the top story within 30 seconds; this has been made consequently longer with in-depth reports/explainers and live crosses. The video also includes a new version of the “KBS Hangul Bangsong” jingle used to accompany the clock ident:

KBS Newsline (late news broadcast, similar in format to BBC Newsnight):

I mean, the comparison is certainly fair, looking at the two - but on the other hand, like a lot of these types of things, there are probably only so many ways you can take a night-time shot of Seoul  the only consolation being SBS (and MBC) being on the other side of the river Han to KBS’ location I guess; aside from that they’re not exactly too far down the river from each other.

Greek state broadcaster ERT debuted new graphics for their news channel, ERT News, 2 weeks ago. There’s a generic design across all daytime news bulletin, with the News at 5 (am, a new morning news show according to Pres Cafe), 9pm newscast and Newsroom being the exceptions:

A much more colourful take than their predecessor, and good to see them dropping the globe/world landscape cliche for something original. Still not getting over the Arial NEWS though… :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Its so confusing when / they mix up English and Greek words and letters. So if they are going to use English words then why not use ERT NEWS rather than EPT.

ERT News or EPT ΕΙΔΉΣΕΙΣ.
