Imparja Television

Oh would it? Awesome. Problem solved then. Just like a metro 10 filled the void in Mildura.

Then there needs to be some rule imposed by the Government that an indigenous broadcaster like Imparja needs to broadcast a reasonable amount of Indigenous programming in order to keep going, not have the output just a plain dirty feed of the cities and the only opt-out be local advertising only. That’s not gonna cut it.

As there isn’t really any Nine branding in Imparja’s new logo, they should be able to still retain a majority of Nine programming but also have a few hours dedicated to local programming.

There needs to either be some Indigenous programming broadcast on there in order to meet certain content quotas, especially for remote broadcasters. To assist with this, the Government could fund more money to Imparja so they could meet this criteria if such thing was to be imposed.

Otherwise, shut Imparja down if relaying a capital city station into e.g Alice Springs is all you’re gonna do.

Ridiculous. Many regional broadcasters have received government funding to assist operations, but if they’re run by Aboriginals, then they must do Aboriginal things? Why is Imparja being held to a different standard?

Again, it’s the optics. Even if Imparja ae being bone idle about producing content, the fact that they’re reducing funding to an Indigenous organisation is never a good look. The do-gooders will have a field day.

That part of the world needs some help and needs a voice - again, if it’s done right, Imparja could be that voice. And if Nine helps out, it’ll give them some brownie points. But it needs to be done properly.

There are valid points for both keeping Imparja and getting rid of Imparja, but I err on the side of keeping Imparja, but getting them to do better.

That’s what most other regional broadcasters are doing, Imparja isn’t any different?

Imparja may not produce local or indigenous programming but it has a commercial production unit not just for advertisers on Imparja, but for other business and government agencies: https://www.imparjacreative.com.au

Weird logic - I assume you will be asking the same of WIN in WA, WIN in SA, SCM former SCA in SA/Broken Hill? All services on VAST?

I get where you are coming from. But their demise and reliance on funding is due to being an independent in the most unprofitable market in the country, while simultaneously being a service of last resort for most of the country. No one wants to buy them or take on that role.

There is more to to Imparja than just providing Aboriginal content on-air to satisfy the urges of taxpayers who want to see return on investment. They employ Indigenous people and provide opportunities in video and audio production, sales and administration. They also contribute through sponsorships and events.

It doesn’t have to be all Indigenous content - just local content.

Again, if it’s done right, it could be a win-win for all concerned. But some hard choices have to be made.

I think Imparja being a thriving operation producing local news and other content that appeals to all and sundry, employing Indigenous people would be a great thing. Tax payers dollars have been wasted on worse, and believe me, I’ve seen it.

Local news? Have you seen Imparja’s footprint? That’s a pisstake.

Not if it’s done right. Imparja can have volunteer stringers in communities submitting video and stories. Commercial outlets use mobile phone footage all the time. Just have a handful of paid staff in key locations with a good system of getting those stories.

They’ve got to be doing more than they are now in any case.

This. I don’t get how people keep saying make local news for imparja. Some might be watching in Sydney, some in Mt Isa, and some in Tamsimia. That’s as about wide spread as you can get, not local. And VAST and RECA channels were probably not ment to have a big amount of local news anyway considering the regional news channels.

I think your idea has merit. There are potential programming that Imparja could produce or encourage community groups to create eg amateur videos. As you said TV stations do it all the time..

Imparja needs to be uniquely different. Also given the government subsidies, the government may be able allow/encourage NITV to allow rebroadcast of locally produced content.

If i was Imparja, the daily windows would be 12:00pm til 2pm AEST* weekdays with a daily exit point for Tipping Point and local news from 4:30pm AEST*

  • given most or all of Imparjas broadcasts are dirty feeds of east coast metros

I have never seen so many cattle ads in one commercial break before lol

Why isn’t the picture inside the box cropped? Why is it partly covered up by the graphics?

This is an unrealistic business model - good luck getting journalists to relocate to remote Indigenous communities for a volunteer job lol.

Best Imparja could do is do a commercial deal with ABC Alice Springs and Mt Isa for a weekly news round up.

I meant people already in the community. Citizen journalists. You don’t have to employ a tonne of qualified journalists - pick a few larger centres for people to be based in to help prepare the stories.

If it’s done right, the ones you do employ could be given some incentives if Imparja gets government funding, you can give them a remote living allowance.

No. That should not be happening. That opens up even more cans of worms. If Imparja can do it, why not Seven, or God forbid Nine, in somewhere like Darwin.

ABC News really shouldn’t be guns for hire for the commercial networks to dodge their responsibility.

Imparja doesn’t necessarily need to do news. Maybe even a daily magazine style show for half hour. It could incorporate some of the elements suggested eg amateur video

With what budget?

The same budget that they may not have to produce local news like ElCaptainCranky has suggested. Im guessing this would assume that the continuance of funding depends on local production.

I would assume if Imparja had to screen local programming, then they may seek additional advertising revenue from sources such as additional infomercials.
