House Rules

I’ve loved the season so far… love the teams and the vibe… shame it hasn’t translated into ratings yet.
I think LEGO will slowly die… so maybe then HR will lift.

Contestant: “That sentence literally killed me”.

Er, no it didn’t.

Just caught up with the episodes from Monday and Tuesday. Who would have thought the surfer sisters who had no prior renovation experience would top the leaderboard? They certainly had an eye on design.

I think the early room reveal is better than a bonus room from last season It’s easier for the team to finish one room 24 hours early instead of renovating another room, especially in a house as big as Pete and Courtney’s. The early room reveal also means the signature item contest has been dropped.
Speaking of Pete and Courtney’s house, its location (Ferntree Gully) meant teams had to drive long distances to specialist shops in other parts of Melbourne, like Mr Cabinets in Thomastown or Ilanel lighting studio in St Kilda. Apart from them, most suppliers are located in Knox / Ferntree Gully area, so why did some teams go all the way to Fountain Gate to shop instead of doing it locally?

I notice there are other changes from last season.
Teams found out themselves which rooms they would get, instead of Johanna revealing to the teams.
Teams would renovate existing rooms instead of altered rooms, thus the areas were fixed. I like this change as teams would no longer have to fight for space to their advantage (or disadvantage).
This season, homeowners led the other teams to the front door of the house. In the past six seasons, homeowners would be in their own house packing their bags before greeting Johanna and rival teams at the front door.
Having the early room reveal means the final day of renovation won’t be shown until Sunday’s episode, similar to the first three seasons. And once again Johanna read out judges’ critiques to the five renovating teams at the Home Base, instead of judges facing the teams.

Lisa and Andy’s win at the early room reveal proved to be the difference, as the five bonus points lifted the SA couple to equal second. However, even without the points, they wouldn’t have to sleep in the tent for two rounds in a row, as their Adelaide home would be renovated next.

Has the budget been cut for this season? The Adelaide house was small yet there was no extension built as there has been for smaller houses in previous seasons. The outer Melbourne house could have been massively improved if the old windows had been replaced but I noticed that they all stayed intact.

It has become more obvious that the two sisters did next to no work themselves on the bedroom they did in the warehouse. That room had an onsite built fibre cement wall unit behind the bed. Last week one of the sisters had to ask one of the guys to show her how to cut a fibre cement sheet which clearly showed that she hadn’t done it before.

It’s possible that Seven applied for an extension to Lisa and Andy’s house in Adelaide, and it was rejected by the local council.

They have a budget for tradies but once they’ve used that up, they have to do the rest themselves. One season, a team had won enough money for the build, that they didn’t even have to paint themselves. They basically bludged through it.

Which is why winning the early room reveal was crucial this season. Having extra $5000 for the next reno meant a team could pay more for tradies’ work.

They were driving to Mikaela and Eliza’s house at Yallingup in WA’s south west, which features in this week’s interior renovation. It’s a 3.5 hour drive from Perth.

Stalking again?

Caught up with this week’s episodes today.
Mikaela and Eliza came last after renovation of Lisa and Andy’s Adelaide home, but since the sisters’ WA house would get a makeover next, it was Pete and Courtney (who came second last) who had to spend the week in a tent. Pete and Courtney didn’t like the solar shower kit and managed to convince the producer to allow for a team vote on whether the Melbourne couple could move to a hotel, and that Mikaela and Eliza would be camping at the next reno (Tim and Mat’s house in Melbourne). The other four teams begrudgingly and unanimously agree. This is a first for the show.
Since the show began in 2013, there has been a condition that if the last-placed team’s home is to be renovated next, then the second-last placed team has to sleep in a tent. People who have applied to compete on the show will have been aware of this condition. So why should have Pete and Courtney complained about that?

It was rubbish and now opens it up for other contestants to complain about the rules.

That means Katie and Alex’s house at Gundaroo, north east of Canberra, would be the last to receive interior renovation. It will be shown during the week of State of Origin game 1 (June 5).

The bathroom Pete and Courtney did was so unfinished that is was unusable as it was, yet they got three 7s from the judges for their zones. Lisa and Andy finished their zones and the judges had very little criticism, but they got less points than Pete and Courtney. The judging on this program makes no sense sometimes.

I think the judges inspected the rooms in sequential order, from nearest to furthest, before they were edited and grouped under each team. If the judges were to see the rooms based on each team’s allocation, there would have been a lot of backtracking and there would be no surprise element in store. For some houses which have an open layout e.g. Mikaela and Eliza’s house which has the dining room sandwiched between an open kitchen and the lounge, it would be hard for the judges to see one room without catching a glimpse of the other two.

Had a laugh at Lisa’s attempt to copy Ross from Friends with her ‘pivot, pivot, pivot’ when they were trying to position the bedhead. Wasn’t mentioned in the show, I wonder why!

Just caught up with Monday’s episode in which Mikaela, Eliza and their mother Kristen returned to inspect the newly renovated family home in Yallingup. It was a very emotional episode and tears were freely flowing as the footage of the inspection was shown to the five other teams. The ladies loved most of the renovation but was scathing of Pete and Courtney’s incomplete makeover of the ensuite. Tim and Mat received the highest score from the judges but Katie and Alex got a 10 from the homeowners.

I just watched the Tuesday and Wednesday episodes. The storyline partly focused on the lounge room and dining room wall that in the end came to nothing. It really was a waste showing all that … meanwhile the two girls have hardly been sighted this week. @Kushaa Yes, the dark floor is a massive mistake that is being compounded by choosing seemingly all black appliances. I would have chosen a brilliant white fridge, cooktop, toaster etc to contrast with the black and to help get some light in there.

The promo for the Tuesday and Wednesday episodes centered on Pete disagreeing with other teams on the choice of dark flooring, portraying him as arrogant, which turned out to be false.

The renovation of Tim and Mat’s house took place on the week of January 13. There were two clues: when Kate and Alex visited the flooring shop the TV was showing Nine’s coverage of the Australian Open, and when Pete and Courtney were at Mr Cabinets discussing the new kitchen, the bottom right corner of computer screen showing the new design was displaying the date (January 15, 2019).
