The real estate agent pre-renovation valuation of the house in Gundaroo was $430,000. It was low, like all of the pre-renovation valuations, as Katie and Alex bought that property for $470,000 in December 2016 and subsequently did some renovations themselves.
So House Rules is back to three episodes next week due to poor ratings of The Super Switch.
Remember there will be two rounds of exterior renovations covering all four homes.
In the second phase of competition, five remaining teams would renovate a double storey house in Campbelltown in Sydney’s outer south-west, which was destroyed by fire in November last year. Here is an article on the fire itself.
Looks like this reno is over three eps rather than four then, which makes sense considering the 4th episode is the homeowners scoring.
Not for the first time though you really have to question the design of the architect of this house, putting the Master Bedroom at the complete opposite end of the house, and on a different floor, to their two youngest children. No bathroom, or indeed toilet of any kind, on that floor either.
These type of renos though are usually a good watch and if they ever did an All Stars series that would be the route to do rather than redoing the contestants original (or new, as they sold the original for a nice profit!) homes.
House Rules: Best of House Rules Countdown Special
In this premiere special, Jamie Durie counts down the Top 10 House Rules Reveals across six incredible seasons, seventy-four contestants and thirty-nine homes.
The bonus room made its only appearance this season, during the give back house round. As part of their reward for topping the interior renovation round, Tim and Mat were given the bonus room at the Campbelltown home (which was the family room) and the brothers had to decide whether to keep it or give it to another team. They decided to keep it, meaning they could either receive five bonus points from the homeowners or lose five points at the end of the round.
What I don’t understand is that why Shayn and Carly replaced the glass balustrade near the entry with a timber frame. The balustrade was structurally sound.
It was a bittersweet night with the most heart-warming reveal yet, followed by a shock emotional elimination for golden couple Katie & Alex. With Graeme and Mary’s family home transformed, their lives changed for ever. On returning to their brand-new house, which went from burnt-out shell to stunning family home in just seven days, father-of-four Graeme said: “We’re not owed anything in life. For everyone to go out of their way and do this for us, it means a lot for us and the family. Thank you very much, it means the world to us.”
Back at Homebase, the judges passed Tim & Mat’s bonus room (although not unanimous, it was a ‘fail’ from Wendy) adding five points to their total score and saving them from elimination. Once the final scores were tallied, it was a shock farewell for Katie & Alex that no-one saw coming. Alex said: “We are devastated, we didn’t think it was our time.” To the other teams, he said: “Hands down, you have changed our lives, it doesn’t end here. We thank you. You are our family now.” Katie added: “This experience has been really tough, but equally worth it. We have this amazing, incredible, beautiful home to go back to.”
Always hate this round where everything that has happened before is disregarded and you can lose someone who is consistently good because of one “bad” reno. That said I’m glad Lisa and Andy especially survived, and also Shane and Carly. Pete and Courtney IMO were the worst of the round.
Tim and Mat dropped the ball in this round. If not for the bonus room they would have gone.
Katie and Alex were eliminated because of the errors they made in the kitchen (the alignment of the rangehood) and Skye’s bedroom (the climbing wall). The couple didn’t mention they were making a house shaped timber bed frame, so last night’s reveal was the first time we saw the creation. I feel that the small distance between the frame and the climbing wall is a safety hazard, especially if a child falls backwards and hits the corner of the frame.
Yes. And in a major challenge from previous seasons, the garden transformation will be done over four rounds, with three teams renovating the fourth team’s backyard, frontyard and the house exterior. Seven originally planned to show the gardens round over six weeks, but with The Super Switch flopping in ratings, it has been forced to return House Rules to Tuesdays, meaning the gardens round will be shown over four weeks.
During last night’s episode there was a promo, in which teams from the current season invited viewers to apply to compete in the next season of House Rules. I was quite surprised about a possible renewal, given this season has been struggling in the ratings (distant second to Lego Masters and The Voice most of the time), despite Jamie Durie joining the show. The big question is whether Wendy Moore can return as a judge next season given her recent appointment as Foxtel’s group general manager, lifestyle? Will Foxtel allow Wendy to have presence on two networks similar to Shaynna Blaze, who is a judge on The Block on Nine and a co-host of Selling House Australia on Foxtel?
So it’s a bit of a coincidence the two teams kicked out so far were the ones the furthest way out for traveling and had huge open areas to do up? The ones left are all suburban homes.
