Yeah listening to some of the show and seeing there Insta it appears they do half the week in Melb and the other half in Sydney.

Personally, it’s quite easy to tell if you’re listening where they are. When they are all in the same studio it sounds a lot smoother than when 2 of them are in Melb.

Looks like they are in Sydney sometimes… 2DayFM - Erin proves that she’s into beer breath 😳 📲 Catch...

But obvious from the videos when they arent…

The biggest tell is that when they’re in Melbourne Ed panels that studio so his mic comes down from the ceiling. In Sydney it is on the desk like the others.

I know I (and other mediaspiers) always seem to be rather negative about the post-Kyle 2DayFM breakfast offerings, but the ratings prove us to be somewhat correct, the shows have gained little traction in the Sydney market.

You would think that over seven years the quality of each breakfast show would improve, but this does not appear to be the case. Same issues- different hosts.

There are always too many hosts - sometimes up to five. It can be argued that even Rove and Sam had one host too many.

There is always too much screaming and forced laughter. This is an issue as the content of the shows is consistently not funny.

It is a bit ridiculous - new breakfast shows in 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020 and 2021 and I am pretty sure there were two shows in 2020. I have lost track. I suspect there may also be two shows in 2021. The only winner has been whichever business has the contract for the 2DayFM photoshoots.

I cannot wait for next week’s ratings. I hope it works for them, but I suspect they need to stop following the “Idiots Guide to FM Radio Breakfast Shows” and to try something a little original.

That’s a problem with all of the ensemble shows. Was listening to some crap on Triple M on the weekend and had to turn it off. Apparently everything that was said was hilarious to those in the studio. Not for those listening.

I agree with you. SCA seem to love this fake laughter.

The best breakfast and drive shows do not have forced laughter. Imagine telling Kyle to laugh at everything Jackie said. I remember when Paul Holmes was the anchor on the Harmer / Moon Morning Crew. He was the perfect straight man. Nowadays, he would be made to laugh non-stop for the entire three hours.

As you said - the worst practice is when the producers tell everyone in the studio (and not just the hosts) to also laugh out loud at every remotely amusing statement that is made.

It is fake, annoying and exhausting for the listener.

“Had we not been up against KIIS, Nova, WSFM, Smooth and 2GB, our show would’ve been an absolute blockbuster in the ratings!” - Every former 2DayFM Breakfast presenter since 2014, probably.

Here’s a quick guide to every* 2DayFM breakfast show there has been since 2014 I whipped up earlier:

*OK, so Rove & Sam actually began in Late 2015. Ditto, Music for Breakfast began during the 2nd half of 2019. Plus Mel B and Em ended their associations with 2DayFM before the end of 2014 and 2018 respectively.

But I think you get the general idea - there’s been 16 different presenters (not including panellists/contributors) of 2DayFM breakfast since 2014 with a common theme being washed up TV presenters for many of them. OK so other Sydney breakfast radio hosts have also done some TV before…but it’s not as if many of those aren’t experienced radio broadcasters in their own right!

Yep, I agree.

Nobody wants to see 2DayFM fail, however continuing with largely the same strategy of the last eight years is not going to work against very strong, well established breakfast shows (two of which have been on-air for 15 years+, one for over a decade, the other nearly a decade) on Sydney’s ARN and Nova Ent. stations. Something truly fresh and exciting is needed on 2DayFM if SCA are to gain some of those who are currently Kyle & Jackie O/Fitzy & Wippa/Jonesy & Amanda/Bogart & Glenn listeners.

There is a darn good chance that this forced laughter is preventing a genuine chemistry being formed between these presenters.

It also makes them less likeable. I want to listen to people who make me laugh. Not people who can’t control their laughter.

Rather that they force themselves to laugh.

Uncontrollable laughter would normally be associated with something hilariously funny.

Like anything I say or do around here.

Wow.

Which show was the best out of all of them, though?

Agreed. I feel like SCA don’t give these shows enough time to gain an audience though. I’m surprised they haven’t tried Carrie and Tommy yet.

It does sound like Hughesy is planning on moving to Sydney. He just mentioned he was looking at places yesterday.

I still think Dan and Maz was the best out of all of them.

I still think 2Day FM need to fully rebrand and go up against The Edge with more of a EDM/Dance mixed with Urban styled music playlist, they could fill then that spot not filled in Sydney completely.

Dan and Maz for sure, should have let them grow.

I agree. If Dan and Maz were allowed to be themselves on air they would have been competitive in the longer term. Alas, it was too much forced fun and fake laughs and not enough Dan and Maz.

The worst of the shows was Rove and Sam. This is when 2DayFM should have rebranded as 2WTF - FM.

Maybe. Or go the other way and play classic hits from the 60s, 70s and 80s that Smooth and WS have abandoned.

Or go full on BBC R2 and play 60s to now with some light entertainment and news.

The CHR/Hot AC market in Sydney is crowded. The top rating stations in places like North America are classic hits/AC/soft AC/classic rock. CHR in particular is struggling.

Another option is urban AC like V103 Chicago and The Wave LA. Would need to be tweaked for Australia but could be done.

There were other factors outside of the on air product that crippled them.

I keep hearing about this. Are you able to elaborate at all?

Without jumping to conclusions it was my understanding the pair were good mates off air.
