Hit Network

I have always loved talking about radio station’s slogans or positioners. I am not a fan of the functional slogans like:

  • Better Music and Less Commercials
  • Sydney’s Best Music Mix
  • Classic Hits
  • News Radio
I absolutely love the more creative positioners like:
  • Sounds Different
  • Rock of the 80s
  • Triple Your Music
  • The Power
  • If It Fits, Wear it
  • Move to It
  • Pure Energy
I would like to suggest a few that 2DayFM could have used this summer:
  • The Wasted Summer - 2DayFM
  • Sydney’s Overplayed Hits From the 90s to Today - 2DayFM
  • The Same Old Songs, All The Time - 2DayFM
  • Sounds Similar - 2DayFM
  • One Logo, Ten Formats, No Idea - 2DayFM
  • Never More Than Two Different Breakfast Shows a Year - 2DayFM

2Day FM has been running promos about how they’ll be celebrating 40 Years Of 2DayFM this year. Even heard a “Stereo 104” positioner used from archived material.

Similar promo running on 104.9 Triple M.

While it’s nice 2Day is reflecting on its past, it’d be better if they did this with a less daggy playlist.

Aside from the callsign/on-air brand and frequency, how much is there in common with the 2DayFM of 1980 and the 2DayFM of 2020 though?

At least with Triple M and (different network but still) WSFM, there are a few other elements of those stations histories which current day listeners can relate to.

Agree. Plus Triple M have been proud of their heritage for years whereas 2Day has not until now.

Ok so it might just be me and it could be a Sunday Night thing. But I’ve had 2DAYFM on the past 30 mins and they are definitely playing more dancey/recent music than I’ve heard them play in a while. Could quite possibly mean nothing but maybe a slight shift in format is coming. Only time will tell.

2DayFM this morning at 9.30am

Sexy voice tells me that “2DayFM Makes Sydney Feel Good”

Cue next song: Eminem’s “The Monster”

A song about schizophrenia or obsessive compulsive thought disorder or PTSD. It depends on which website you visit but the song is about a severe personal struggle.

Feel Good?

You cannot make this shit up.

Hi Nick. Thanks for the pick up. I’ll be more careful of this next time. Cheers!

Thanks Ellie. Your show was making me feel good up to that song.

Eminem made me feel on edge. For a second I thought I had taken the placebo pill by accident this morning.

This is what listeners to the regional Triple M network have dealt with for a couple of years. “Feels Good… woooah Triple M” into Dan and Shay’s Tequila… a song about getting sloshed because of a break up. Yeah feeling good… wooooah… yeah…

Considering that 2DayFM thought that “feeling good” includes a song about struggling with mental illness I thought I would warn other stations about slogans they should not use:
2CH: Fresh Hits
2GB: Sydney’s New Place to Relax
Although considering that 3AW’s overnight show is now from the harbour city I could see them using KIIS’s slogan - 3AW: So Sydney.

I for one have been listening on tunein for the past few days. Apart from being maybe a bit safe music wise… I think Ellie and the announcers gel well with the music and the presentation is really good.

I thought I’d give it a go from up here in sunny Queensland on tunein after all the criticisms here and I am finding the exact opposite… loving it… only thing I will say is broaden the playlist a bit but other than that sounds great!

Takes alot to keep me listening for more than a few hours… found myself even putting it all morning yesterday.

Great show Ellie.

From a tech perspective though… would be nice if song names worked on tunein… maybe let your tech boffins know… All sca stations in QLD have that working from when I’ve listened

Has anyone done a playlist comparison between 2Day & hit107?

hit107 sounding a fair bit younger and more upbeat considering they also play a wider variety.

Hit 107 plays more of a 90’s to now playlist rather than the 2DayFM 80’s to now. I think it always has since its format was changed.

Definitely makes it a bit more upbeat.

I did hear 2 songs from the 80s (George Michael and Belinda Carlisle) within 2hrs.

That’s plenty for a station called “Hit”. 2Day’s playlist should follow. Hit107 has a good flow.

I know this will go down badly with some people on this forum but I think the criticism of 2DAY’s playlist is pretty unfair.

They certainly have the most variety of music in Sydney and probably one of the better playlists in Australia. At least in the major cities. A lot of other stations have narrow playlists compared to 2DAY.

However I totally agree with those who say they need to scrap the 80s music. WS and to a lesser extent Triple M have this covered. Instead as some others have said expand the 90s to Now playlist and really concentrate on that. I have nothing against 80s music but generally that’s when I flick stations. They’ve got a good thing going when they play the 90s to Now.

They could take a leaf out of Triple Ms book this Summer and playing some “random” tracks people have forgotten about.

The other thing I really think they should do is get rid of RNB Friday’s. I understand this is a little tricky now they do the annual concert but I still think they could do it without doing it every Friday.

The best example of this is I would put it like this, if I listen to the breakfast show Mon-Thursday, I would be unlikely to tune in on a Friday and find somewhere else. Which is probably why you find Nova change there playlist up a bit on a Friday even if most on here don’t like it.

As I said there are a lot of positives for 2DAY. I just think a few tweaks and it’d help them a lot in 2020.

Ash London Live is now 7 days a week 7pm-9pm across the Hit Network.

That’s actually bad by Hit, why would Ash want to work 7 days a week? She needs a weekend.

I’d say she’s pre-recording the weekend shows, there is no way she’s working a 7 day week.
