Hey Hey It’s Saturday specials

Daryl did host some Best of Red Faces specials on Seven in the early 2000s though.

What do you all think about this idea of having a number of specials. I think this could end up bad

After ratings last year, yes… right move from Seven.

We need to remember these specials will be used as fill in content during the year. It helps give Seven’s programming department more backup content if something doesn’t work.

These specials should be scattered throughout the year - to fill in the gaps / holes in the Seven Schedule. Instead of airing the usual Motorway Patrol repackaged specials.

As for a Red Faces Special, that includes new contestants - why not. We have shows like Australia’s Got Talent and The Voice Generations for the (usually) talented performers. Red Faces is for those unusual and silly auditions that are once offs, rather than going into more rounds like other reality shows.

There were some great Red Faces act on “Hey Hey it’s Saturday “ during its run (and some not so great)

If it’s a small number of specials, then I think it will be alright. Anything above six, Channel Seven will send Hey Hey back in its grave.

That won’t be a bad thing.

That’s why we had those Best and Worst of Red Faces specials.

I’d love to see Red Faces as a stand alone show with new contestants. Could be a Friday/Saturday night show… 7.00/7.30 …just 30mins

Depends on how many there’ll be. If it’s just two (as the TV Tonight article Johnson linked to suggests), think there’ll be enough interest for them to rate decently. If Seven/Daryl Somers get carried away though, the appeal will wear off very quickly.

Will Red Faces be included in the Hey Hey special or will it be it own show?

The guy at Channel Nine told me if they had a variety show like Hey Hey it wouldn’t work. I think he means Nine is jealous of the success Seven had with Hey Hey!

well Daryl did offer to do last year’s special at Nine, but they refused.

after the flop of Rove Live at 10 I doubt any Australian network would be game enough to do a variety show nowadays!

Rove Live was a flop? Id say it was successful during most of its run (from 2000 until 2007), and went “downhill” in its last two years on Ten (in 2008-2009).

Andrew Denton tried to recreate his ABC talk-show on Seven, and that failed too, lasting only one season. Since then, no other networks have tried a variety program.

If networks want variety, they will be “pre-taped” these days like the Hey Hey Specials.

I’m talking about the recent reboot of Rove Live, which aired on Saturday nights in 2019. It got beaten in the ratings by SBS.
