HD Broadcasting

Plasmas are always long-lasting but my power bill was reduced significantly after getting them out of my house a few years ago.

The thing to remember is that the problem isn’t the name brands - it’s the people who bought the biggest LCD they had at the store for the least they could spend and got the no-name cost cut stuff. Through to the mid-2010s MPEG-4 wasn’t a given in those.

But, this problem is just a communication one - networks seem to just take the approach of making the change and hoping people work it out, because explaining codecs is hard.

The problem largely stems from the networks trying to use ‘Freeview’ certification to shoehorn in anti-consumer measures like limiting ad skip and forcing their branded TV guide - so most manufacturers didn’t bother seeking it - meaning there was no consistent branding for MPEG-4 capable receivers, as the government’s branding was just focused on "Digital ready’ which at the time was exclusively MPEG-2 HD as a bar.

It will happen eventually.

A spokesperson for Seven Queensland has advised TV Blackbox that 7TwoHD will continue to be broadcast in its current position for the next three months. The HD channel will then be moved to Ch72 (ch62) with the SD service to be “discontinued shortly after”.

Yippee! Hopefully 7flix is broadcast in HD soon.

I remember buying a HD box in 2004 or 5 for $200 and thinking it was a waste as hardly anything on TV seemed HD on our CRT widescreen. We had some SD box that kept having software glitches can’t recall the brand name .

A few years later 2009 the LCD Tv negated the need for a set top box.

Not sure where to put this exactly, so feel free to move it.

It’s too bad that that video is in 240p. The thumbnail in particular looks like that low-quality Rugby League 3 Wii video game from 2010 (helps that it’s basically the same camera angle as in the game). You’d think as an advertising tool they’d try to upload it in 720p at least if they couldn’t upload 1080p.

it’s honestly quite disappointing that none of them have 1080p online streams available. like seriously, it is 2022 : )

It’d be nice to get 1080p streams of on demand content…

SBS Worldwatch should have a higher resolution, given most of the bulletins provided by overseas broadcasters are produced in HD.

At what cost though? The content is 95% non-English news bulletins.

They maybe produced in HD, but does SBS also receive them in HD? A lot of international broadcasters don’t have HD feeds that cover Australia.

A lot of feeds are coming through the internet now rather than satellite (will be more the case when Optus D2 retires next March) even from overseas, so it’s possible they could have HD feeds available, they’re just not outputting in HD.

Big news on the HD front. Thanks to BJT2 for the tip.

Fantastic news. Hopefully this could mean some changes on FTA soon.

Checking out 9’s multiplex tonight for SOO and they are running 9HD at a much higher bitrate that usual, using 5.5 Mb/s The SD channel is also comparatively high at 3.3 (video + audio). 9Gem HD is 3.4 while everything else is below 2 or lower.
