Don’t they normally switch the HD feed to 7mate for the weekends only, or is that not the case anymore.
I don’t recall Prime ever doing the 7mate/7HD switch. I think that was a Seven metro thing.
Nice, 4:3 analogue Sons & Daughters upconverted to HD, that is respect!
im sure Prime7 was going to add hd to 7mate and back flipped after getting complaints about people cant get hd
They should have stuck to their guns and not let the minority of complaints stop them.
Evidence?
Also, as has been said before, sometimes you’ve just got to force people to switch over otherwise it’ll never happen. Progress doesn’t happen when people bury their heads in the sand and refuse to accept change because “woe is me!”
7mateHD showed up in Canberra for a few days in 2021 then disappeared.
Regional broadcaster Prime7 made a similar move with the 7mate channel in Canberra earlier this year, but was forced to reverse the decision after an angry backlash from viewers frustrated at being unable to access the channel. <
Forced is a strong word; they took the soft easy option of rolling it back for a few complainers.
I get where you’re coming from, but the counter argument to that is, a bunch of people going “oh well, that channel’s gone, I’ll just stream something”
There is an element of risk in deliberately reducing your audience size.
It shouldn’t be up to any particular network to lead the charge, a coordinated effort by all networks by x date would be the better approach.
more like to many lazy people cant be bothered updating their tvs lol
Very true, especially when the audience you risk alienating is the audience that is also the most loyal. Older people are less likely to gravitate towards streaming services (because of the technological barrier and also because they have well ingrained habits with TV already in some cases), you annoy this audience too much by adding barriers to accessibility and it is possible you will lose those viewers too (with a negligible gain of younger audiences to replace them that are attracted by HD- most of those viewers have already long and irreversibly abandoned FTA TV).
Or can’t afford to update their TVs- the age pension doesn’t get you all that far these days…
Of course there is. SBS, Ten and now Seven acknowledge the risk but continue on.
Agreed, along with good messaging for people who will lose a channel.
I still think regional areas are less of a risk than metro areas, simply because digital was rolled out later, when MPEG-4 tech had more market penetration.
With the way things are these days, I don’t think people would really want to update their TVs just because there outdated because of something that most people probably don’t understand. Most people would be pushing for their TVs to last 10+ years these days this would push the TVs into the range of becoming outdated.
Personally, I like to get about 5-7 years out of mine.
Most of my extended family are still using the same TVs they purchased in the late 2000’s when Digital TV became a common thing and the analogue switch off was on the horizon. I know of a few whose TVs definitely aren’t MPEG-4 capable
My brother did this with a 2007 model lg tv I think he had it 12 years in the end.
Agree; and without poking around in the ratings forum, I’m gonna take a stab in the dark and say 7two would have a reasonably older audience where this would be a concern.
However there’s still a lot of non compatible TVs given that MPEG-4 wasn’t standard in many cheaper models until maybe 2012. And then there’s those older Panasonics which are MPEG-4 compatible but have it disabled by default (for some unknown reason), so most don’t realise a simple setting change would give them more channels.
I’d argue that regional is more of a risk. The earlier rollout in metro areas and higher average wealth means more would have naturally replaced their tvs, or even received better hand-me-downs from family.
I have had mine for over eight years, still running just as well including HD picture. Should last at least another five the way it is running.
My Panasonic plasma TV from 2009 is MPEG-4 compatible and is still running just as well.
