Great songs heard on radio

Some great “TGIF All 80s” songs again tonight on the ‘Forever Classic’ AM regional log (GNFM/XLFM and 3GG).

It Doesn’t Have To Be This Way – The Blow Monkeys
Beats So Lonely – Charlie Sexton
Work – Uncanny X-Men
Only For Sheep – The Bureau
All I Do – Daryl Braithwaite
Heart And Soul – Huey Lewis & The News
Star Trekkin – The Firm
Peter Gunn – The Art Of Noise
Boom Boom Boom (Let’s Go Back To My Room) – Paul Lekakis
Endless Road – The Time Bandits
King For A Day – Thompson Twins

I haven’t heard that Peter Gunn theme for ages on the radio, and it was a similarly rare treat to hear The Firm’s ‘Star Trekkin’…

Heard these on 80s New Wave DAB (SCA station) last night

Sweet And Sour – The Takeaways
Eloise – The Damned
Computer Games – Mi Sex (doesn’t seem to get played much anywhere anymore)
Poor Boy – Split Enz
Take The L – The Motels
Suedehead – Morrissey

Heard this on Gold 104 during my travels on the weekend:

Just really nice to hear something that wasn’t “Take On Me” for the 10 millionth time (and it’s not a bad 80s pop song either)

‘Getaway’ should have used that as its theme song. Catriona is inevitably ‘walking on sunshine’ wherever she goes.

I’m thinking of doing a ‘Yes, they had other songs’ show on the Conga Line soon.

Nice! I also like The Living Daylights, which gets a spin on UK radio but not sure I’ve heard it here.

That gives me an idea for a triple play:

‘A View To A Kill’- Duran Duran
‘The Living Daylights’- A-Ha
‘Goldeneye’- Tina Turner

Great triple play. Fun fact, A View To A Kill is the only Bond theme song to top the US charts. Or it was until very recently. I know the Sam Smith song topped the UK charts but not sure about the US. Mind you I don’t put as much credence in topping the charts these days as opposed to the 80s - there just aren’t as many songs to compete with nowadays. A View To A Kill was held at No. 2 on the UK charts for 3 weeks and didn’t quite make it.

Streaming (and the lack of true singles) skews the charts too much.

Heard on 80s New Wave this afternoon

The Riddle – Nik Kershaw
Head Over Heels – The Go Go’s
Where Is My Mind – The Pixies
Weird Science – Oingo Boingo
Cloudbusting – Kate Bush
People Are People – Depeche Mode
Dirty Creature – Split Enz

And I also heard this one from a band that I had nearly forgotten about - and I never really heard them on the radio back in the 80s either…

Just Like Honey – The Jesus & Mary Chain

Probably also belongs in the ‘Did They Really Just Play That’ thread, because they are most definitely not New Wave, probably more indie / alternative pop.

I love most of these songs, but hate a few of them, such as the one by Falco.

But because I never hear them, I would not change stations when they come on. I suppose it’s the power of playing some of these forgotten classics, their novelty factor makes them less of a turn off.

On Triple M regional Awesome 80s Friday today

The Streets Of Your Town - The Go-Betweens

I was in the car for a few hours today in the Hunter Valley and that was the only song of note I heard, the rest was the usual overflogged stuff.

A bit of a Brisbane anthem. Still a bit of conjecture even amongst the band as to whether it was written entirely about Brisbane but Brisbane has certainly adopted it as their own. It even featured in an advertising campaign. And of course their is a bridge called The Go-Between bridge across the Brisbane river.

Their song Cattle and Cane is certainly about Brisbane and Queensland though. It’s one of my all-time favourites and sums up perfectly a regional Qld kid living in Brisbane for Uni in the 70s/80s.

Awesome song.

Now I find it hard listen to the Awesome 80’s, its just the same songs week in and week out. I wish they would do something different each Friday, like a theme… Classic Rock, 90’s, one hit wonders etc.

The metro Awesome 80s Fridays is a better listen than the regional one.

But hard to get Sydney Ms in the Hunter Valley due to News Radio Muswellbrook on 104.9. But I could have streamed it.

2NUR had Casey Kasem’s American Top 40 from this week in 1986 on today!

I heard these great songs, some I haven’t heard on the radio in years!

Move Away - Culture Club
Digging Your Scene - Blow Monkeys
If She Knew What She Wants - The Bangles
Love Touch - Rod Stewart
One Hit To The Body - Rolling Stones
Is It Love - Mr Mister
Your Wildest Dreams - Moody Blues
Like A Rock - Bob Seger
I Wanna Be A Cowboy - Boys Don’t Cry
Vienna Calling - Falco
No One Is To Blame - Howard Jones
I Can’t Wait - Nu Shooz

I also found this website that lists all the songs in each AT40 Countdown from 1970 to 1988.

Your Wildest Dreams will always be known to me as “the 2AD song”. Every time I went through Armidale while Dad drove to/from Queensland in the early to mid 90’s, 2AD always played it.

Even more freaky, I did a job to Armidale last year where I drove a uni student from Coffs Harbour to Armidale and I kid you not, I tune to 2AD and they are playing Your Wildest Dreams on their afternoon show.

Funny how some songs always remind us of certain stations. Your Wildest Dreams is an FM104 song for me. They weren’t a station that repeated songs over and over but this song was certainly on high rotation for a time, at least for them.

Just before 8:30pm AEST on Nights with Dave Gleeson on the Triple M Network, I heard “Behind Blue Eyes” by Limp Bizkit. When I was young, I had completely no idea that it was a cover of the song by The Who.

That reminds me…

Last night, Dave Gleeson played Alex Lloyd’s “Amazing”.

It was overflogged at the time of release (2001) and I got sick of hearing it then, but I had forgotten about the song until last night, and I really enjoyed hearing it again for the first time in ages.
