Space in the athletesâ village would be a factor, even if facilities are there for the sport to be held, most cities arenât exactly flush with capacity - especially as they canât take it from hotels they need to cater to the public attending.
While no formal discussions have taken place yet with any state governments, Commonwealth Games Australia CEO Craig Phillips said he supported the new hosting framework.
âYouâve got to keep reviewing what youâre doing and refining it and making it attractive for potential hosts,â Phillips said.
âAnd one way of doing that is just spreading the load and also spreading the benefit across multiple host locations.
âAll of it is available for us now which is exciting because it gives us a lot more scope for more nations to be involved in hosting the Games.â
Canât they do that anyway? Like they can with the Olympics? The Olympics just has a host city but you can hold events outside the host city. I really donât see why they canât do that.
The hotels where the tourists these events hope to encourage would stay at? Pricing out visitors to save money building athlete accommodation doesnât make sense.
What is the value of hosting the event in a different city every time? give one city a 20 year contract and make it viable for them to invest in it properly.
Other sporting events manage fine. These slim down comm games would probably be a similar scale event to the Australian open. And all the players stay in hotels.
This should be how all Olympics and Commonwealth Games are hosted. Cycle through previous hosts and/or cities that already have most of the infrastructure there.
They could kill two birds with one stone - build new housing for athletes during the games, and sell the housing afterwards. You know, the housing everyone is saying weâre short of?
Thatâs exactly what theyâre doing for the Brisbane Olympics. Theyâre building new apartment blocks that are to spec with what people will want to buy after the games, in an already established apartment suburb in Hamilton.
The Gold Coast Games were a great success in this regard. Events spread across SEQ. No strain on one centre, its transport or infrastructure. The GC Games were very well planned and run.
Except for the Opening Ceremony transport debacle where I did not get home until well after 2am. 40k going home on buses - what could possibly go wrong???
Thatâs a shame. I caught public transport from Northside Brisbane to Carrara and then back to Southport and home again in one day, and on several days, and not a glitch. Busy yes, but flowed smoothly and well organised.
I used trains and buses.
