Only Athletics and Swimming are guaranteed - everything else is up for negotiation.
It could be as low as 10 sports over an 11 day program - it will be what can be delivered with existing infrastructure, if its only 11 days it makes reusing facilities hard.
Cricket out, Boxing very unlikely given governance issues
My personal view (and it wonât be popular) is to remove any events that require a panel of judges to get a result.
If it canât be definitively measured by the Olympic motto of fastest, highest, strongest etc. itâs not required.
Might be a bit easier for the Commonwealth Games to recognise World Boxing than it is for the IOC, since a higher proportion of Commonwealth nations have switched affiliation from the IBA (the old boxing governing body that the IOC striped recognition of). Still a big mess though.
Track Cycling apparently wasnât a âCoreâ Sport (and Road Cycling apparently is) so given the 10 are likely to be from âCoreâ Sports and the 4 venues are more likely to need to be multi use (technically the road wouldnât count as a venue) Road is more likely to get in. The only way that Track gets in is if they also incorporate a Para element.
Track has always included a para element. The facility is there with the Emirates Arena (Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome). I will be shocked if Track Cycling is not included
Agree @VictorianSun - I would be shocked if track cycling isnât there. Road we could probably do without at CGs level - the world tour teams in the past have been reluctant to release riders for it anyway.
The slimmed-down program has axed diving, badminton, beach volleyball, cricket, road cycling and mountain biking, rhythmic gymnastics, hockey, rugby sevens, squash, table tennis and para table tennis, triathlon and para triathlon, and wrestling from the Birmingham 2022 Games.
In 2026, Glasgow will host athletics and para athletics, swimming and para swimming, artistic gymnastics, track cycling and para track cycling, netball, weightlifting and para powerlifting, boxing, judo, lawn bowls and para bowls, 3x3 basketball and 3x3 wheelchair basketball.
Agree with the other half, but marathon, at least one of those two cycling events, hockey, diving, table tennis and possibly badminton and wrestling shouldâve stayed.
Problem with the Marathon and Road Cycling is that the events require major road closures, which would be very costly.
However, I donât see why they canât have Diving at the same venue as swimming - surely it wouldnât be that expensive to get some officials from the governing body.
