Glasgow Commonwealth Games 2026

Did Australia even have one signed? I believe a report said Seven and Nine were keen, at least that was for Victoria 2026.

Wonder if 10 (who last did Glasgow to success and praise) would be interested?

Thought 7 had Melbourne, because when the Vic government pulled out, the conversation was how this was another negative for 7, after losing lots of major sport.

Networks are likely holding off until a replacement host is officially announced before making a bid for the broadcast rights. It’s true that Nine and Seven showed interest in securing rights for the former Victoria 2026 Games and are likely to bid for the relocated event. However, I personally doubt that 10 will bid this time around, especially considering their reported $30m expenditure for Glasgow 2014 (during previous ownership). Moreover, Paramount probably has more pressing concerns regarding their own future, which might deter them from bidding on rights for an event that would be aired on an asset they may not own by then.

Reports coming in that Glasgow will host the Comm Games again in 2026:

Wonder if 10 would be interested again? Can see Seven desperate having lost most major rights to Nine. Can also see Nine wanting them, to stop Seven and given Seven used to show them all anyway. Could be a tense three way battle, though Birmingham’s ratings were a bit deflating, though were never going to do Gold Coast’s and a 2022 environment.

Since the Olympic success on Nine in Australia, would they be keen on the Commonwealth Games as well? 10 would not to have enough money to cover the games that is the reality for them.

Doesn’t Seven still have the rights to this?

I thought 7 already had them. There you go…

No, Seven does not have the rights to the 2026 Commonwealth Games. Seven also confirmed this to media last year.

It is true, they were reportedly interested and apparently got very close to signing, until the bombshell withdrawal news.

Whether they’d still be interested, under new management, who knows. I’m sure 10 and Nine would still be keen. Could be a bidding war. One wonders whether discussions with the CGF may have already quietly been happening, despite no confirmed host nation.

An announcement could happen as early as this week.

If 9 gets them, that’s more dollars spent… before long, they’ll be in the financial mess 7 is, and when the TP bubble bursts, it’s the same cycle all over again…

The rights to the Ashes tour of England and Rugby World Cup (both in 2027) are also up for grabs. Can Nine afford them too?

Nine’s already got them for the rest of the decade

Let Nine have the Commonwealth Games rights after the back of Olympic success as 10 would not afford the rights

Commonwealth Games Scotland organisation (CGS) announced a new funding proposal in a new statement on Saturday, with money mostly coming from the Victorian Government’s A$200 million compensation, ensuring the project “does not require – nor has CGS asked for – any underwriting from Scottish or UK governments”.

This was always the funding proposal but it is just to try and get the Scottish government to stop thinking about it and say approve it as time is ticking…

The 2026 Commonwealth Games that Victoria pulled out of appear set to be held in Glasgow, after the Scottish government confirmed its support for hosting the event.

Suggestions of 10-13 sports in Glasgow.

Also mention of Melbourne’s ranking as a top sports city had rapidly declined since abandoning the games.

"If you look at Melbourne’s reputation in particular, there’s a global sport index and in 2022, Melbourne was ranked in the top ten, it slid to 21 last year and this year in July, when that list was published, Melbourne is now at 32.

Sydney (18th) and Brisbane (25th).

Looking at the Birmingham sports and looking to see which sports won’t make the cut, particularly in light of there apparently being 4 venues, I’m thinking if they keep 10 it could easily be

  • Athletics (Core, includes Para elements)
  • Swimming (Core, incorporates Diving, Para Elements)
  • Weightlifting (incorporates Para Powerlifting)
  • Cycling (Road Cycling definite, unsure about track)
  • Gymnastics (both artistic and rhythmic)
  • Rugby 7s (could be played inside athletics arena)
  • Netball
  • Lawn Bowls
  • Badminton
  • one of Judo or Wrestling (Boxing has governance issues and probably won’t be resolved in time, if it was that would get the nod)

I would disagree with Cycling points you make. I think Track Cycling is definite however Road Cycling I would say is unlikely given the extra measures the Games would need to take such as road closures, more equipment, more security. The Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome is all ready to host international competitions.

Would like Lawn Bowls to feature but given the four venues they are planning on using, it wouldn’t be included in those four (Tollcross, Scotstoun, Emirates, SEC)

  • Scotstoun Stadium (Athletics, Rugby Sevens)
  • Scotstoun Indoor Arena (Squash)
  • Tollcross International Swimming Stadium (Aquatics)
  • Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome (Track Cycling)
  • Commonwealth Arena (Badminton)
  • SEC Halls (Wrestling, Netball)
  • SEC Armadillo (Weightlifting/Powerlifting)
  • SEC Hydro (Gymnastics, Netball Finals)
