It would be nice to have him involved as he was my favourite British Gladiator but he is 71 even if he is still in good shape … perhaps he could have been the referee or something.
The second week see the start of the quarter finals on Wednesday. Monday includes sons of two original Gladiators while Tuesday is over 30s night.
Australian Gladiator costumes look fairly skimpy
“Brand safe, fun for all the family”
10 will be pumped in the ratings with Alex DeMinaur first match on night 2 on Rod Laver Arena.
This is why they should’ve gone last Monday as originally planned.
Unpopular take: I reckon it could actually be Seven who are in a bit of trouble this week
Nine: Australian Open start, 9NewsMelb re-launch
ABC: Muster Dogs return, Total Control return and other raters
10: Gladiators launch
Seven: Big Bash and Fourth Test (both haven’t really been rating strong and the latter set to be even lower with the Windies yet not until Wed), H&A return also barely 400k metro and 100k Syd & Melb
Will be a big, interesting week of… summer non survey LOL
The BBC revival has aired tonight and was very very good and has been almost unanimously well received. It’s exactly how you do a revival - you respect the format, you respect the memories and you respect the fact it’s 30 years later. The best comment I saw was it felt like a new show for 2024, not a 30 odd year show being revived.
Still absolutely baffles me 10 make a big deal about counter scheduling against sport and then choose a format which will really appeal to sports fans to do so with. I assume it’ll be stripped nightly too.
How can we watch the UK version?
I watched it this morning and I agree, it was outstanding. That comment “it felt like a new show for 2024, not a 30 odd year show being revived.” describes it perfectly, and is why it’s a good thing that the show didn’t involve any of the old Gladiators or use the same music for the events as the 90s version, however classic it may be. These Gladiators are good enough and personable enough to stand on their own feet.
Being on the BBC, it was so nice not having ad breaks. Along with 5 events plus the eliminator it really helped keep things moving. The only issue I had with the show was the Gauntlet being too easy for the contenders. If they’re only going to have four Gladiators in it then they need to let the two with the power pads wrap their arms around the contenders more like the Australian series used to allow.
My biggest concern with the Australian version is that it is only 4 events plus the eliminator per episode, so there is going to be too much talking and not enough action. The lack of a crowd doesn’t bother me at all but I appreciate it may not ‘feel’ like classic Gladiators in the way that this new UK series does.
I’ve noticed in recent promos that they cut away to reactions from the hosts while the events are being played presumably in place of crowd shots, so it’ll be interesting to see how that looks across a full episode.
Also watched the BBC version this morning and it was very impressive indeed. There is absolutely no way 10 can match up to what the BBC has put out. With 10’s version, it’s sorta weird that the episodes are 1hr 20 mins (including ads) which gets each episode roughly to the one hour mark. If its only 4 games and the eliminator, what are they doing for padding or is it just extra ad time? Either way, the BBC has shown that their format is def the way to make Gladiators. Lets see how the 10 version turns out…
You’ll need a VPN and a BBC account. Be prepared for slowdown as iPlayer is getting slaughtered with traffic. A file of the episode seems to be propagating online.
The UK version was pretty good. Definitely needs that old iconic game music especially the eliminator. The game music they’re using now sounds so bland and barely audible.

Gladiators 3DA Ready.
Gladiators Is The First TV Show To Take Over All Eastern Seaboard 3D Anamorphic Sites, Ahead Of Its January 15 Launch On 10 And 10 Play.
Network 10’s Gladiators has become the first commercial free-to-air television show to dominate premium 3D anamorphic (3DA) billboards along the eastern seaboard of Australia.
In January, Gladiators took over billboards at Bourke St in Melbourne, Macquarie Centre in Sydney, and Queen St Mall in Brisbane, thanks to Paramount Australia’s Design and Marketing teams and VFX and post production studio, Cutting Edge. They also take over oOh!media’s iconic 3D Yagan Square site in Perth.
Network 10’s Head of Marketing - Broadcast and Digital, Andreana Walton, said: “A show as epic as Gladiators deserves a larger-than-life campaign. Our integrated marketing campaign features several engaging and exciting formats, but we are especially proud to be one of the first brands to feature across all 3DA sites around the country.
“We commissioned Cutting Edge to bring our vision to life, under the direction of our incredible Network Head of Design, Karen Song. Thanks to oOh!media and of course our media agency, Wavemaker, for allowing us to add the ‘wow’ factor to this incredible campaign.”
Cutting Edge’s Creative Director, Zenon Kohler, said: “Our Creative Studio, SQUEAK, was thrilled to work on another 3DA out-of-home campaign, this time taking over multiple giant screens across capital cities.
“Since each screen had its own unique requirements, it was like solving multiple puzzles with the same pieces. All live-action and CG elements were tailored specifically to each location, including bespoke camera angles and performances from each of the Gladiators.
“We’re proud of the result, and it’s always a pleasure to work with Network 10.”
Josh Gurgiel, Head of Creative at oOh!media’s creative and innovation hub, POLY said: "There’s no bigger stage for Gladiators’ triumphant return to Australian television than our iconic 3DA sites. We love working with Network 10 and are thrilled to see this fitting show harness our innovative creative solutions to engage audiences, helping make Gladiators an unmissable summer show.”
Gladiators is hosted by iconic sports stars Liz Ellis and Beau Ryan.
What numbers does the show need to be a success … and what do we think it will get?
I’d guess it start around 200k … but 10 would be hoping for 350-400k.
It has the advantage of being in school holidays and no major competition on Seven, however there is the Aus Open on Nine and first run shows have returned to ABC, but it could attract those not interested in sport/tennis or a particular match and perhaps for some there might be nothing else on, including streaming (although True Detective returns on Foxtel/Binge tonight).
I think anything 300k-500k metro broadcast would be a positive result, anything higher a hit. Barely 300k or below (or well below) and possibly in trouble. 10 will obviously look to the key demos though. Could be an interesting night. Alex de Minaur’s much anticipated clash at the tennis too, which should do very well.
Should get some views on live streaming and more so catch-up too. Might have to wait for VOZ tomorrow afternoon but more importantly in 7 days.

TV Tonight saying this was filmed at Disney Studios?
Just checked the EPG guide on TV and it looks like 10 will be simulcasting Gladiators on 10 BOLD and 10 Peach at the same time as the main channel.
Absolutely ridiculous from 10. Desperation. They just had a puff piece on the news.
They’re debuting this on the wrong night.
Looking like this biggest flaw of this series is no audience and the scheduling date.
