Gladiators

Pretty normal for every show these days. They had Neighbours, Dessert Masters, The Traitors and Masterched getting the same treatment last year. In fact, every commercial news channel does this sort of cross promotion now. I’d say that’s an indication of the sad state of “news” bulletins these days.

Yeah. We get it. You’ve only said 50 million times already.

Fake crowd noises.

The male and female winners will join the Gladiators line-up for the next season, but won’t receive any prizemoney.

Fox League’s Matt Russell is the commentator for all events.

Youi is the sponsor of the show.

EDIT: as reported by News Corp this afternoon, a warning from one of the Gladiators was shown at the start of tonight’s episode.

The lack of atmosphere is very off putting

I don’t think it’s too bad tbh

I love it and as suspected, not bothered at all by the lack of crowd.

The show desperately needs an extra game in it though, way too much talking. Starting with Duel was a mistake too given it can be over in half a second (like we saw). Should’ve started with a high action game like Pyramid.

With the show supposedly returning for a second season, the producers may finally bring back the public audience.

The “are you ready” stuff goes on for too long and is overdone. The 90s version wasn’t as bad as that.

A bit too much trash talking too, the 90s version wasn’t as bad as this in that respect.

They also got one of the original Gladiators names wrong, they showed a picture of Flame but said it was Storm.

It’s only just okay so far for me.

Yeah I don’t think the casting call that 10 advertised is any certainty the show is returning, putting that out is very low commitment and doesn’t guarantee anything, as well it was super vague about the show returning.

It’s as good as it needs to be. Just enjoy the entertainment peeps!

It was OK as a whole but there were a few aspects that were quite off putting .

The way that the Gladiators were all providing commentary/reactions from the green room. It just felt fake and cheesy most of the time. I guess this was to cover for not having an audience.

The referee was annoying me too with the over the top yelling and just how slow he was going into each event. This might have worked in the 90s but it was just an aspect that felt dated.

The games were 50/50. I generally enjoyed the faster paced ones like the wall climb but it would have been nice to see some new ones too. The contestants this episode were disappointing and really struggled with most things, so they didn’t provide much exciting competition.

I did get into it more as it went along but I wish it had a few more newer elements too it and don’t think I could sit down and watch this multiple nights a week. It’s a 1-2 night per week show max. Otherwise something I’d more likely flick on in the background or just watch bits.

Just a thought, wonder if G’tors and the AO might cancel each other out a bit tonight, in that regard one does wonder at 10’s programming/scheduling, unless one of the reasons was designed to take away viewers from the tennis (and Seven’s cricket - also similar demographics).

All three are rich in younger viewers, especially the hard to reach 16-39s (where Nine was at almost a 50% FTA share last night), cricket skewing male, tennis more 50/50 and guessing Gladiators will be similar 50-50 (or 10 probably want it to be or families/‘grocery buyers’).

The first episode wasn’t too bad. I don’t like the referee’s slow warning at the start of each event either.

I think it showed the personal side of the Gladiators.

Atrocious. Cheap, nasty, with more padding than a fatty in need of the gym. The Gladiators are passable, but the rest of it is just so bad. I wish I’d never watched the new BBC version over the weekend - it’s a far superior product.

For an 85 minute (!) slot, you’d think they would’ve managed more than four events plus Eliminator. Stuffing with ads is one thing but there just seems too much piffle, but apparently that is event TV production in the 2020s; it won’t be the last thing to be afflicted by that.

Alas, it’s not “real” sport so it won’t get the 15 minute “Kayo Mini” treatment it sorely deserves. :joy:

Not something I could watch four nights a week. If I watched things on streaming it’d be an occasional 10 Play pick-up I guess.

Big agree on that - as a comparison, the very original in AUS started with Gauntlet and then Pyramid on its premiere, although I know things have changed and something like Gauntlet might be an issue given all the concussion stuff now.

But I dipped out after that first play of Duel, really not something you want to see as the first game of your premiere :grimacing:

Same here

BBC spent money, brought back their original theme which pleased many, and were rewarded handsomely

Ten spent as little as possible (which visually showed), dubbed in audience noises, and with a potentially worthless first prize if the show isn’t renewed. No memorable music to drive the drama (a worrying trend in Aussie TV, execs underestimate the power of a catchy theme/soundtrack, they just see it as another cost)

I really wanted this to work too, I’ll stick to the UK version

So no prize then.

Did they forget about Nickelodeon? Missed out on an extra 10k ratings.

Also, whilst the presentation of the Gladiators revival may have been alright in my opinion, I didn’t like how there was little or no tense background music during the events, especially The Eliminator. C’mon, couldn’t they have just used a rearranged/reimagined version of the original UK /Australia background music?

Premiere episode was just under 400,000 with top 5 rankings in all key demos.
