George Pell Saga - Coverage Discussion

Well played

But of course, it’s well worth remembering that even a broken clock is correct twice a day.

Not often I agree with Hadley but in this case.

With some of the more detailed coverage going into the HC’s ruling, it appears the decision relies heavily on a narrow legalistic approach to doubt over Pell’s defence witnesses, including that prosecutors didn’t seek to discredit them/raise doubt about their testimony, e.g. Pell’s assistant testifying that he was with Pell all that day.
This seems to ignore common sense that any juror could doubt (or apply lesser weight to) such testimony due to the fact that it was many years ago and so witnesses testifying of normal (not unusual) events could understandably not necessarily remember the exact date (or make an honest mistake about the date), whereas a rape victim will never forget what happened to them.
Human memory is fallible.
If I have understood correctly, then it’s particularly sad that the HC decided against trusting the thorough, deliberate decision making of both jury and the appeals court.
This isn’t a case where new evidence came up disproving a crime, it’s just the HC saying they believe there was sufficient (‘reasonable’) doubt which in their opinion should’ve prevented a guilty conviction.

Exclusive!!

Did George Pell have a reasonable excuse for leaving his convent?

Maybe to get food. I just wonder if the media are following social distancing rules.

So much for Sky News Aus claiming Bolt was getting an exclusive?

Is it too late for NSW to close the border?

Well technically his permanent place of residence is Barwon Prison isn’t it? So isn’t he breaching the Public Health Act by staying overnight somewhere else?

By the looks of it Paul Dowsely (Seven) and Reid Butler (Nine) are following Pell to Sydney

Driving behind him, or is Pell flying?

7 was the only one to ask questions of him at the petrol station. No sign of 9. Looks like they got mobile phone vision from somewhere.

Is this essential travel from the media?

Why is it essential travel for Pell?

Media is essential service. And thankfully the media gets to decide what’s news and what’s not. If the government got to, well that would be a dictatorship wouldn’t it?

:man_shrugging: :woman_shrugging:

I assumed @turdall was making a joke?

Benefit of the doubt. Haha.

Isn’t he going to his sisters house to live in NSW? I would say that is essential

I don’t think we need to track his road trip to NSW… it’s a bit overboard

Disagree. Apart from CoronaVirus it’s one of the biggest stories in the world right now. And the fact he stopped to talk to the 7 reporter absolutely justifies the chase.
