General TV History

Brilliant. Thanks for that. I would never have noticed the change in graphics in my youth. And now that I’m looking out for it, you can see the shadow and edge of the Melbourne presenter during some of the ball drop footage, and hear that the rattling ball sound doesn’t align with when the balls are in motion…

Draw 2001 happened on 23 September 2000, so during the Olympics in fact.
(No, I don’t remember it off by heart - Tatts have CSV files of the previous draws for download :P)

Going a little off-topic - curiously, there actually was no Draw 2000 (or indeed 3000). All Saturday Lotto draws since the late 80s have odd numbers, and that’s a hold-over from the old Mid-Week Draw (not to be confused with the later Wednesday Tattslotto or the ex-NSW draws they now have) - it shared the same draw number sequence as Saturday Tatts (using the even numbers), but it finished in May 1996 to make way for the start of Powerball.

Apropos TV, an example of the late Shirley Strachan doing the Mid-Week Draw in 1987, although not quite complete:

Remember when ads for phone sex and text services were all over the TV late at night? I remember during school holidays in 2004 or 2005 (when I was 10-11 years old), watching some extremely violent film at around midnight on this ancient 1975 vintage Toshiba portable TV we had and seeing these kinds of ads for the first time.

Here’s what these ads for adult phone lines were like in 1991. Pretty hilarious to see the ‘classy’ image (I guess) they were aiming to project, in contrast to what eventually ended up on screen in the mid 2000s (NSFW, obviously):

And in contrast to that series of classy ads, here’s one from 2007 (NSFW, obviously):

The reports to the Advertising Standards Bureau for these later ones are hilarious to read. The vivid description of the ad in question, the puritanical complaints about how their 5 year old is watching TV during school holidays at 11:30pm, etc.

Apparently some of these later sex line ads were shown in Perth at 9pm instead of the intended 11pm watershed, too. (lol!)

Fortunately it seems that we’ve got less of these rubbish premium rate hyper-sexualised ads on TV these days. Most people just look online for whatever they want instead of getting a pixellated MMS GIF of a woman’s breasts jumping up and down.

Interesting post.

I have an early-90s tape from Perth featuring a few of those late-night phone service ads and one of them depicts an uncensored topless woman! Couldn’t get away with that even in the more risque 2000s ads.

Hey do they have these types of ads still on the box?

You know, for a friend.

I did see a recent one on Eleven during The Late Late Show With James Corden, they play Ashley Madison and other hotline number ads too. They also used to play them during The Project reruns at 11:30 on Ten, but have stopped for a few months.

Ahh my Childhood  i used to watch this when i was a kid i remember the opening the theme and the catchphrase Bye for Now Not for Ever

Yeah I miss that. Even kids shows that networks shafted to 1am did not escape the sex line ads.

Something else you rarely see today. Nudity in promos.

Some openers to a few '90s kids TV shows I fondly remember.

You wouldn’t happen to have any caps of Y?!, would you? At least, I remember it being called Y?!

2003 was my favourite year, with children’s drama Snobs and Hot Sauce. I explicitly remember the game review for SimCity 4 on Hot Sauce back then, which convinced me to buy the game. I still dabble with SC4 today.

No, I don’t unfortunately. But hopefully I’ll come across a recording of it at some stage! :slightly_smiling_face:

Does anyone remember ‘Pick Your Face’?

Or perhaps even further back with ‘A*mazing’?

Holy shit you’re dredging up ancient childhood memories I didn’t realise I still had! I used to love that show!

I don’t remember Amazing though. Might be a bit early for my time.

Easily the greatest kids game show of all time. Everything else was shit compared to it. Time Masters, Challenger lol (although Douggy the Pizza Boy was a great host).
