to give context that the show is not live. I know NEW10 also used to do it when broadcasting national news bulletins from the east coast on delay.

Do you know what’s the name of the program on that delayed telecast?

Those two caps of Charmaine Dragun - was that the Sydney or Perth newsroom? Looks like the Sydney one to me.

Correct. That bulletin must have been dated Saturday, October 9, 2004, as Fergo was weekend newsreader at the time (and a back-up to Jim Waley).

You’ll all remember that Mark Ferguson was presenting NNN Sydney during the time of the Asian tsunami. Network execs were impressed with his presenting during this time, which attracted high ratings, and he was therefore promoted to weeknight newsreader for 2005 (Jim Waley was apparently told not to return).

If this hadn’t happened, and Waley served out his contract which was to expire at the end of 2007, then chances are Peter Overton would’ve taken over in 2008 and Fergo would never have had his chance presenting Nine News on weeknights.

That was the year when Seven news Sydney began its lift with Ian Ross luring from retirement. In 2005, seven news Sydney beat Nine News for the first time. Nine went into downward trend and lost to 7 News by a big margin in 2006.

In 2003, Nine News won all 40 weeks with Jim Waley at the helm. Seven News may have been third or fourth that year.

But in 2004 it only managed to take out 27 weeks as Seven News with Ian Ross gained momentum. In this article by The Age it says “Seven’s news beat Nine’s news in Sydney again last week” - the week in question is that of June 14, 2004. It also states that Seven’s news was winning multiple weeks against Nine for the first time since the late 1970s.

In 2005 Seven News won all but one week of the news battle in Sydney; in Melbourne it was the exact opposite (Nine News won 39 of 40 weeks in that market that year).

I would have thought that’s since the launch of DOnD in 2004 at 5:30pm timeslot, the ratings have started to improve. Iirc, The Price Is Right finished 2nd in its 530 timeslot.

That is correct, DoND was a smash hit in 2003 but only lasted about three months or so because of poor ratings (you’ll remember 2003 was a horror year for Seven not winning a single week that year - Nine won 39 weeks and Ten won one week).

But the abbreviated version became a smash hit and it took Nine several hits of their own before they found a show that could beat DoND - Millionaire Hot Seat, itself an abbreviated version of WWTBAM, which saw resurgent ratings for Nine News on the east coast this decade.

In the intervention, Nine’s version of an old favourite (Wheel of Fortune) flopped so badly.

The Sydney newsroom was the Perth newsroom

But 7 had RWC2003 in AUstralia And with the grand Final between Australia and england , ratings soared past 4 million.

I know the reason why production of Ten News Perth was shifted to Sydney - was because converting NEW-10’s studios was a financial impossibility. What I also noticed was that different backgrounds were used for the Sydney and Perth 5:00pm bulletins.

This is the Ten News Sydney opener from December 31, 2003:

And the Ten News Perth opener from that same evening (also note Ron Wilson is wearing the same suit in both videos):

The background seen in the Perth bulletin was also used on national weekend bulletins, too.

Then, when Ten News got a relaunch in January 2005, the globe/national background setting was ditched. I also think both Sydney and Perth bulletins got different camera angles too.

The Australian Idol finale was also in the same week, too.

Other than that, Nine killed the rest of the competition thanks mostly to a show called The Block, which for some reason disappeared after the 2004 season, not to return until 2010.

Yup. Perth got it’s own unique look, just by shifting the news desk. The big wide shots weren’t used that much for Perth as opposed to Sydney, making it a bit more intimate.

Nine in 2004 was strong thanks to AFL, NRL, Cricket, friends, Sale of the century, McLeod’s daughters, CSI, the Price is right, Nine News, ACA, Frasier, Funniest Home videos, location, location and a few other shows.
The block was dumped in late 2004 due to costs (Iirc). This was replaced by various renovation programs in 2005 that didn’t fare well.

Sale Of The Century wasn’t on-air in 2004. It was revived in 2005 under the Temptation brand but never achieved the ratings heights that SOTC did between 1980 & 2001, likely because Home & Away on Seven was quite popular during the 7pm timeslot in the mid-late 2000s.
