General News Events - Coverage Discussion

Seven Melbourne led with it. Had an update at 6:30 and another at end of bulletin.

Nine Melbourne ran it second and mentioned death at very end of bulletin.

What did other markets do?

ABC News Victoria reported Abe’s death at the start of the bulletin, similar to the Queensland version as shown above.

What do you want… a pre prepared tribute package of his life or rolling coverage?

It’s breaking news and there really isn’t a lot to say at this point (Eg: no active shooter on the loose etc).

The analysis will no doubt follow tomorrow.

Every other network was able to put something together. Even without the death, the shooting alone was big news, there were hours to prepare coverage of that. I don’t think it’s unreasonable to expect more.

And if it was a recent Western leader shot dead, I suspect there would have been.
I do think commercial broadcasters from this part of the world are unprepared on covering Asian stories.

Did you actually watch? 7 and 9 and 10 had extensive reports. Question is whether it should have been top story.

I think it should have been.

I always find it interesting to see misreporting on popular science especially astrophysics.

The latest to receive a lot of attention has been the first images and reading from the James Webb Space Telescope.

I noticed discussion on morning TV say how many billion kilometers away the telescope was! Then later a BBC radio discussion moderator was talking about how the first image was of our galaxy as opposed to hundreds of galaxies in the early universe.

Media Watch last night included a segment related to local Gold Coast News bulletins highlighting the number of stories that were just ads for local property developers and real estate agents. “with glowing PR for local property developers.”

Not sure what prompted the expose at this time as the bulletins have been using stories like this as filler for as long as I can remember; there doesn’t seem to have been any more than usual that I’ve noticed.

I also think that there is almost a special case for the Gold Coast where stories about the lastest apartment complex etc feed into the city’s tourism economy and are a bit closer to news than in other markets. Though perhaps there should be less reliance on using footage from websites rather than sourcing the vision themselves.

An interesting case study in how news is sometimes reported now.

7 News here reporting based on multiple social media posts. In one you can see that there are multiple other people with their phones out as well.

With the following caveat required.

7NEWS.com.au has not been able to verify the reports and has contacted ACT police for comment.

7NEWS.com.au has contacted Canberra Airport for comment.

More to come…

By the time the necessary fact checking has been done and response from authorities received, I’ve already read 20 posts and watched 5 videos of the event.

Live streams on the web. Technology has evolved since Apollo and the Space Shuttle eras.

When the last Space Shuttle flight landed, the iPhone was only 4 years old and streaming wasn’t mainstream as it is today.

ABC News have covered a couple of SpaceX launches - with any luck they might carry a few minutes of live coverage

Yeh true. Can just stream.

Just thought it’d be great to have live coverage on a major channel.

Why would they do that? What significance would it have to their viewers?

Humanities return to the moon? Yeah, you’re right - no significance. But at that time, probably nada.
