News sites duke it out on Prince Philip coverage

Perhaps unsurprisingly, given its British heritage, it was Daily Mail Australia that ran the most Philip stories in the top 10 positions. However, it was another free news site - 7News.com.au - that gave Philip stories the most time in those slots.

This could be major news this weekend depending on where this out of control Chinese rocket lands. It was launched last week with the first stage of the Chinese space station on board.

Seeing as the final hurdle to Brisbane 2032 is the IOC meeting on July 20 (A tuesday) it will be interesting to see if any of the FTA channels cover this live.

“…The winner is Sydney Brisbane!”

Perhaps Seven might?

I doubt it’d be national coverage from anyone. At the most I’d say (maybe) news 24, QTQ and BTQ might but would anyone in Sydney, Melbourne or anywhere else care?

I would imagine it would be very limited as well, but maybe they could cross to just when they are about to announce, on Social Media perhaps?

True Facebook lives seem to be the go to at the moment.

Depending on the time of the announcement (especially if before 6pm local time) , I’d expect the announcement of an Olympic Games in Australia would be covered live on Seven and Nine and ABC News.

Will be streamed live online no doubt about it. Technology has changed since 1993.

Aside from the news channels, I’d probably expect “Australia’s Olympic Network” (Seven) to be running national coverage of the 2032 announcement. Not sure about Nine.

Of course even if Australia does win the rights to hold the Olympic Games for a third time, there won’t be anywhere near the same level of national euphoria there was 28 years ago!

it will definitly be on 7+ - one of the channels to watch on 7+ is the olympics channel that carries live ioc sessions

News reports are saying that the vote will be on 21 July. Seven will be showing Softball that morning and afternoon (including Australia vs Japan at 10:00am AEST and Italy vs Australia at about 3:00pm AEST), and Women’s Football that afternoon and evening (including Australia vs New Zealand, the last game at about 9:00pm AEST). With Seven in Olympic mode I would expect that they would show the result of the vote live.

Queen’s Birthday Honours – ABC recipients

The contributions of several current and former ABC colleagues have been recognised in this year’s Queen’s Birthday Honours list, including veteran sports broadcaster and commentator Charlie King.

Mr King is just one of 252 Australians who received an AM for significant service to the Indigenous community of the Northern Territory. Along with his 30-year career with the ABC behind the microphone, he has played key roles supporting Indigenous communities and is a former Chair of the ABC Bonner Committee. He was previously recognised OAM in 2015 for his broadcasting and community service work.

ABC Managing Director David Anderson congratulated Mr King and said the recognition was deserving for someone who had provided such a valuable community service.

“Charlie is not just a great broadcaster but is a recognised voice for Indigenous communities, someone who has played a key role in supporting his peers and those around him. This award reflects his unswerving commitment to Indigenous people and his work tackling the issues that affect them.”

Other ABC employees recognised include former foreign correspondent Tony Melville who received an AM for significant service to corporate and government communications; ABC Sport commentators Ruan Simms (NRL) and Bec Goddard (AFL), who have both received OAMs for their service to their respective sporting codes; former regional broadcaster Ian Doyle, who managed the South Australian Rural Department in the 1980s and 1990s; and Julian Cribb, the ABC’s Science and Rural Affairs correspondent during the same period.

Former ABC Board member Vanessa Guthrie also received an AO for distinguished service to the minerals and resources sector, and as a role model for women in business.

“Congratulations to all recipients,” Mr Anderson said. “These honours reflect the contributions ABC staff, past and present, make to the broader community.”

Late April fools joke?
