On another big Friday night of sport Nine got a big boost from the much anticipated NRL Battle of Brisbane with its share up two points. The Friday Night NRL had a five city audience of 428,000, an unprecedented result for a regular club game in recent years including a 256,000 in Brisbane to be the number one show in that market for the week. The equivalent game in 2022 had 306,000.

Seven still won the night with a huge 36.4 share, though down one from the previous Friday. ABC lost 3.5 share, while 10 and SBS were both up one.

The AFL result, that was impacted by a late finish due to a power failure at the game with 20 minutes to go, will see adjustments to the game and post-game entries in final numbers. Earlier in the night, Seven News posted its lowest 6pm week-day audience of the year.

Better Homes and Gardens did better this week, airing in Melbourne for 30 minutes on the main channel. That saw it ahead of Gardening Australia on ABC where Endeavour was down 100k on the previous results for its timeslot on Fridays.

10 had a split schedule across the markets with a Socceroos game on the main channel in Sydney and Melbourne only and regular programming in other markets. Despite the higher share, none of the programs made the top 20.

The NRL also delivered a big audience on STV with 382,000 for the headline game.

That’s a big NRL figure in Brisbane, dwarfed Sydney and was very close to Melbourne’s AFL (one only wonders how they keep getting those sorts of figures even though only one local team, a lesser followed one and were thrashed), one of the closest Friday AFL and NRL margins I can remember.

Which makes Seven’s massive share margin questionable, including main channel very nearly outranking Nine’s whole network. A good turn-out all things considered for Lions in Brisbane, looks like it increased significantly later in the night too and easily outrated AFL market Perth.

And with the hype and some online turning things into a battle of sports and teams, you wonder if Brisbane’s audience should’ve/could’ve been even higher, as we see Adelaide and Perth AFL do over 200k often a couple of times each year, with half of Brisbane’s population, yet Sydney and Melbourne with double Brisbane’s population beaten by them or very close to - ratings can be fickle and strange.

And looks like BH&G getting back on track, beating Gardening (including Syd and Melb) - first in a while, with Melbourne now high again (thanks to that 30min between news and AFL), add Brisbane back on main channel next week and should see even higher.

The Dolphins-Broncos derby thrashed the AFL in Brisbane.

The soccer friendly rated poorly on 10.

The NRL result is higher the the audience for Semi Final 1 in 2022.

Goes without saying but 10 really need to sort out a better strategy for Fridays (and Saturdays) for this year and moving forward.

All that momentum with TLR now all but lost with the show off the radar, and no programs in the top 20 for the main channel last night.

Channel Ten 5.4%?

Important to note that the 7pm Project did not make the Top 20 on either Thursday or Friday night,

The excuses in here for the poor performances are that young people go out on a Friday night, and that the NRL is on a Thursday night.

Enough of the banal excuses. Ten needs to drop the “youth network”’ strategy becasue it is failing.

An option is to rebrand as a news station with many half hour bulletins across the day ie. Midday, 2pm, 9pm etc.

Stop wasting millilons on Lisa Wilkinson. Employ more journalists and create a credible news service with economies of scale.

Rant over

Yes because the news rated so highly on Friday also. Let’s put more of that on?

Yeah
It seems the solution to Ten’s woes is to axe one news program and replace it with lots of others which repeat the same news every couple of hours.

Not repeat the news - the news cycle is 24/7.

But yes, rolling news coverage. A 30 minute bulletin every 2 hours.

I know you are in love with the “youth” strategy and you thought hiring Lisa Wilkinson was a great idea, but you have egg on your face because the station is delivering single figure shares on nights other than the weekend.

You do realise that Ten News At Five is one of the few programs they have that is consistently in the Top 20?

5pm rates okay, 6pm bombs.

Survivor rates 500k. Maybe just have that as rolling coverage.

Survior has been the success story of the year.

Yet again, the Football fails to attract viewers - how long is it going to take Ten to realise that…

As has been pointed out to you a couple of times, Ten is not a news brand right now and it isn’t something which will change overnight. And just because viewership is decent for the 5pm news doesn’t mean viewership will be good at 2pm or 9pm or whenever else you have news on. Ten need to invest in what they have now rather than your suggestion of throwing spaghetti at the wall. Fully reinstate locally produced bulletins, at least for weekdays, either remove the 6pm hour and replace it (something like Neighbours), or maybe keep the 6pm hour with a recap of the day’s stories and a longer form investgative piece.

This I agree with. The hiring of Wilkinson to me looks like the signing of a early 30s football star to a reasonably long contract. It initially started off well and they saw some success with it, but as the talent started to wear off and the performances began to dip, the money becomes an issue. The sooner they can get off it, the better.

The AFL (and the preliminary post match/Armchair Experts segments) did very well. As did the NRL in Brisbane.

10;s split schedule due to the Soccer did average for 10. At least their Tuesday night Soccer match is on 10Bold nationwide, instead of the split schedule. But kudos to 10 for trying something new and having live sport against the AFL and NRL, even if it is just in Sydney and Melbourne. There’s not many sporting events coming up of a Friday or Saturday nights anyway that warrant a main-channel offering.

Football rates very well. Unfortunately Ten only have the rights to soccer.

They need to have some form of sport… the main ones like AFL, NRL, cricket, tennis are all locked up.

Ten has to do something different.

The reason I suggest the rolling news strategy is because on most nights, the News is the number one program across all states.

Ten need to cash in on this.

If you’re going to push it, at least be factual.
The project was ahead of it sun-wed. Some of those days the news also didn’t make the top 20.
On those days that it did, it was not ahead or number 1 in all states.
It was also 3rd in its timeslot…(it used to be first)
