The first Friday night of the AFL season saw Seven post its highest share of 2023, up three from Thursday to be 12 points clear of second-placed Nine. That saw large changes from recent Friday viewing with Nine down 4, ABC down 3 and 10 down 2 to its equal lowest share of the year and SBS down 2.

The AFL FTA audience was 551,000 which compares to 505,000 for the first Friday game of 2022 and 587,000 in 2021. Earlier Seven News did well including its fourth win of the week in Sydney. That was despite The Chase recording a survey low audience at 5.30pm.

Nine’s night saw the NRL drop just below 300k. That was after Nine News had its lowest result for this year’s survey.

While ABC’s share was down it still managed the top entertainment shows including Endeavour that was down 10k and Gardening Australia that was unchanged. Meanwhile, 10’s prime time line up again missed the top 20 with the afternoon’s 10 News unchanged week-on-week.

The AFL came in at 259,000 on Foxtel, which is up from 190,000 for the equivalent game last year.

Also on Fox, some impressive audiences for NRL with 376,000 the headline number. Rare to see the (national) numbers on Fox higher than Nine’s FTA 5-city number.

Big win to Seven thanks to the AFL. The first episode of Friday Night Countdown, which aired on main channel in Melbourne, beat ACA in the city. From next week though it’s back to 7mate.

BH&G hit a new low with the entire episode on 7two in Melbourne and Adelaide due to the footy.

If 7 was more competitive on Tuesday & Wednesday, they could of won the week with a Saturday win

Perhaps that might prompt Seven to ditch the 8.30 Front Bar in Sydney and Brisbane for something more competitive.

Friday is the new Saturday for 10, they need to firm up a better strategy and line-up for Friday nights moving forward.

They should do a weekly reality entertainment show that young families who are home could watch. Just once a week, only for the Friday audience.

Like Big Brother Friday Night Games was.

Maybe Dancing on Ice, The X Factor or something.

Definitely needs to be an alternative to the other lifestyle offerings / live sport.

After many years of creating consistency and having a loyal audience with TLR in that slot, they’ve basically given it away with a failure to adequately plan or find an alternative to air.

Given Friday is often The Projects lowest rating might, possibly make that Sun - Thur nights with alternative programming Friday night couldn’t hurt IMO.

A sports entertainment panel show for something different could be an idea, along the lines of The Thursday Night Sports Show they had on ONE circa 2014. If they get a decent panel together with the likes of Beau Ryan, Tara Rushton, a different sports reporter or presenter from the network and a guest each week and maybe even Tim McDonald for the comedic element. Relatively inexpensive to do I’m sure.

Also a game show of some variety would be something different to mix up the schedule, attract a different audience and offer an alternative in a different timeslot.

A sports panel show wouldn’t work in my opinion. Why watch a panel show when you could watch the actual game?

Point of difference would be that it’s general sport and entertainment, so the demographic and audience would be broader than say your traditional die hard fan tuning in to watch their team play each week.

Why do anything different then? Get the tone, panel and timeslot right and they could be on to something, offering an alternative, building out their sports slate and taking some risks.

I’m not saying put such show right up against AFL/NRL or the like, that would not be smart scheduling but I’d be more inclined to watch something general like that where it’s casual each watching with a few laughs.

Replacing The Project with a sports panel show seems like a good idea in theory, but it just would not work in practice as I don’t believe it could find an audience. You have three big issues in the way of the success of the show:

  1. The NRL starts at 6pm on a Friday.
  2. The popularity of the competing 6pm news services.
  3. People preferring to be out on a Friday night rather than being at home.

Die-hard fans aren’t watching since they will be watching/attending the games, and casual fans are probably at a pub with their mates, having dinner, or watching the news before the kick-off of the game on FTA.

Wow! This is getting super close between Hot Seat and Tipping Point

Less than 60k between each other

Don’t forget that Hot Seat in at 5pm on the East Coast, 4pm in Adelaide and 3pm in Perth where we see Tipping Point at 4pm.

Once the numbers dip on the East Coast further more, then Nine will be worried.

As for 10’s ratings last night - against the AFL and NRL, and ABC’s popular Gardening Australia - ouch! They certainly need new content, instead of “the Best of The Graham Norton Show” and endless repeats of other shows. To help them boost their shares up a little. It’s not gonna beat the AFL and Nine, but at least get to a more respected share.

Wait really? I didn’t realise Tipping Point was at 4PM in Perth??
Nine should jump on doing a local version of the show.

Lets call out the elephant in the room.

Ten 5.2%

Apparently its all just part of a strategy that I dont understand?

Ten need to move with the 9pm News asap.

I also have the solution to the 6.30pm timeslot because they need to fix this

Unless they can find something really compelling that will appeal to the people that arent interested in watching the footy, they’re going to post poor Friday numbers for the next 24 or so weeks.
