Are they actually losing content or just the linear channel?
Linear channels will soon be history. As long as the content is still available on the platform, then it appears Foxtel are simply moving forward

I didn’t realise until reading that article it was losing the BBC channels including BBC News too. Feels like there won’t be much left. A lot of my Foxtel viewing these days is international news so this is a big loss.
It’s not just the channels either. There are also a few shows on various channels that have stopped over the past few months. I know my mum had it pretty much for soap operas like Days of our lives, which are now moving to 10.
Even Arena which I used to watch a lot of, primetime slots are just filled with endless Wheel of Fortune episodes at the moment. It might be because summer in the US so less Bravo content but just feels like there is significantly less programming on many existing channels that used to justify me keeping it.
Foxtel better hurry and announce what new channels are coming or I’m close to dropping out myself. To justify it for me they will really need to boost up the variety across the board. Add some local material ,new music channels (bring back something local that’s not MTV branded), add some more news and docos (given they are losing some) and get some other new content.
You probably already know about this? 25+ news channels for $8 pm
Being Foxtel owned I wonder if BBC News is going to leave Flash as well as Foxtel?
When Foxtel got rid of thecomedychannel and replaced it with Fox Comedy (or Comedy) a lot of the good content also went. For example, while Last Week Tonight ended up on FOX8, The Daily show was axed. Who’s to say it won’t happen again.
I only really watch foxtel for MSNBC, HBO content and F1. It’s really a waste.
There’s nothing really else to watch. It’s all smoke and mirrors and complete price gouging,
Disagree - there will still be a place for linear services.
Wasn’t that around the same time that 10shake was launched, so Paramount took back their content (and now they don’t even show the Daily Show).
And (Fox) Comedy is probably more a continuation of 111Hits/111Funny/Fox Hits than the Comedy Channel but the Comedy badge was better branding that Foxtel owned.
Particularly for Foxtel subscribers, some of whom would’ve been trained for decades to flick through channels of reruns.
Probably would be a good market for FAST style channels for individual shows like the catch up services have actually, might be a good way to artificially inflate value if they added a bunch of them (even if they’re streamed to IQ3/4/5 customers, rather than an actual channel on the satellite).
Exactly this. That’s the one thing it has going for it, late night or weekend channel flicking is where I mostly watch it. Catching random episodes of things that I wouldn’t search/watch on a stream or wouldn’t watch a full episode of.
If the content slides that’s why it will lose people, not because there isn’t room for linear viewing (because the content is very easily available streamable too).
That’s why I think they need to boost their simper offerings like music and news, as these are common things I flick too as quick filler viewing. They still cover Lifestyle stuff well which is a plus. A gameshow channel (they had one temporarily) would be good too. They’ve had Fox Classics how about an Aussie Classics channel with old Aussie shows and movies. Give the whole Foxtel brand a bit of zing too with some flagpole Aussie content, it could be simple pre-recorded entertainment/promo/pop culture filler stuff pushed across different channels.
It’s not. Foxtel is losing channels snd content. BBC First programs will not remain with Binge once the contact ends. The American daytime soaps are going to 10play. Etc
this is one thing that’s missing. i have prime and have been watching water rats and blue heelers. both have held up over the years.
the big thing that’s dropped in channels is Children’s TV - once CBeebies gores they will only have Cartoon Network, Dreamworks & boomerang - there will be the same amount of kids Tv as there will be religious channels!
These are both gaps they could surely fill that I’d think would be relatively inexpensive? They have constant repeats of some shows like Highway Patrol as it is. There would have to be a huge back catalogue of Aussie shows that are just sitting in a black hole somewhere. Classic Kids could even be an idea too- fill it with old kids shows that might even interest parents who watched them when younger.
I think streaming has sadly made linear kids’ TV redundant. Not surprising there will be so few channels left.
Blame Bluey!
Huh? Blame Bluey, who is on FTA, for the decline of children’s FTA television? ![]()
It’s Bluey’s fault for making every other childrens show inferior. Wackadoo!
It’s a joke, David. Nothing more.
Is there a decline of liner pay TV channels elsewhere? In other words, is the number of linear pay TV channels going down in other countries?
