FOXTEL has once again established its place as home to the world’s best drama and entertainment content, as the 74th Emmy® Awards nominations were announced overnight honouring an incredible line-up of shows available to watch in Australia on FOXTEL On Demand and via the suite of integrated apps.

The nomination ceremony, held for the third year as a live virtual event, recognised a host of ground-breaking new programs and rising stars, along with much-loved talent and hit series, with FOXTEL content accounting for over 139 Emmy nominations this year and including acting nods for Australian’s Sarah Snook (Succession), Toni Collette (The Staircase) and Murray Bartlett (The White Lotus).

FOXTEL viewers are now able to enjoy more than 290 Emmy nominated moments all in one place thanks to the integration of Netflix, Amazon Prime, SBS and ABC iView apps on iQ3, iQ4 and iQ5 set top boxes.

Succession has been recognised as the most nominated series at this year’s Awards, taking a total of 25 Emmy nominations. The critically acclaimed drama series set in New York and centred around the Roy family and their family-controlled media conglomerate, included nods for Outstanding Drama Series, Lead Actor for Brian Cox and Jeremy Strong and Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series for Australia’s Sarah Snook. Production has commenced in New York on Season 4 of Succession and Seasons 1-3 are available to watch On Demand on FOXTEL.

Satire comedy The White Lotus received 20 nominations, including Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series and an acting nod for Australian’s own Murray Bartlett receiving a nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie for his role as fastidious resort manager Armond. Jennifer Collidge received her first Emmy nod for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited Anthology Series or Movie, a category which boasted another four Supporting Actress nominations for the series.

Other key highlights for FOXTEL’s Emmy-nominated series include:

• Dark comedy Barry received 14 nominations including Most Outstanding Comedy Series, with lead actor Bill Hader receiving multiple nominations including Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series, Outstanding Writing and Directing for Barry and Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series for Curb Your Enthusiasm.

New apps coming in thick and fast. 9Now a couple weeks ago and now Disney+ on the IQ5 last week.

Also, Discovery ID now officially in HD on the IQ5. Both in the sense that like most of the IP channels it’s been in HD for a while now, but the EPG now finally admits it with the HD logo. Joins Dreamworks as the two channels that are broadcast in HD, have the HD logo for their programmes, but not listed as a HD channel by Foxtel.

Foxtel piggybacked off Telstra’s cable network, which they handed off to the NBN. Foxtel is kicking cable customers off the network and making them switch to satellite or internet from 2023.

It was $11Bn for Telstras copper and cable network. No specific figures for the cable network only unfortunately.

I find this fascinating as i remember in the 90s when the pay TV cable went up in Sydney.

Am I right in claiming that Foxtel was part owned by Telstra and that the telco gave them access to the cable. How did other pay TV businesses, such as Optus Vision, link cables to households?

You’d be right! Foxtel was originally a 50/50 venture between News Corp and Telstra. Ever since they merged Fox Sports into the Foxtel operation (it used to be solely owned and operated by News Corp) it changed to 65/35 News Corp’s way. Telstra is apparently trying to exit the company as well.

Optus did have their own HFC network for Optus Vision before they also sold their cable network to the NBN. Theirs only went for $800m though.

It was allegedly in a poorer state at the time of purchase too, although I believe that was debunked once NBN got physical access to both networks (it also had a significantly smaller footprint)

Especially since the core Foxtel service is moving to internet based delivery. Wouldn’t be surprised if Foxtel Now was axed and Foxtel was just available without the iQ. Especially since most of the Foxtel Now apps are rebranding to just “Foxtel” it seems like this is the way they’re going.
