I was going to say, that’s the one thing I can’t do with Foxtel Go. So this could be a reason to move to the new iQ5.

I wonder if this is to do with the current cloud technology law Australia has? Or it’s just something that is coming but its not available yet?

If you don’t have a hard drive attached to your iQ5, you won’t be able to:

  • record programs
  • playback recorded programs
  • pause live TV (iQ5 satellite connection only).

Does that error only apply to iQ5s with a satellite connection without the hard drive attached? That seems more likely to me than being able to pause on a phone but not a set top box connected to the internet.

That’s how I read it too, you’ll still be able to pause internet based streams without a hard drive, just like Foxtel Now and Go. Will be interesting to see if there’s a work around for pausing FTA without a satellite connection, or if that just won’t be possible like it isn’t now with the Foxtel Now box.

Also an interesting question is where does this leave the future of Foxtel Now. They’ve been trying to deter new users from Now and direct them towards satellite/cable for a while now, with Now’s ridiculous pricing structure, and now their main Foxtel product is going full streaming, I can’t imagine this gives them much incentive to keep Now hanging around.

4K over IPTV is fantastic. Looks like I am returning to Foxtel… Never thought I’d say that.

From ACMA:

14 September 2021

Foxtel breaks rules with live sport betting promotion

Foxtel has breached broadcasting rules by airing a segment promoting a betting service during the live broadcast of an AFL match on Easter Monday afternoon.

An Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) investigation found the broadcast breached the rules in the Subscription Broadcast Television Codes of Practice 2013.

ACMA Chair Nerida O’Loughlin said under the rules broadcasters must not air gambling advertising during or within five minutes of live sports broadcast between 5 am and 8.30 pm.

“These rules are in place to reduce exposure to betting promotions. In particular, parents worry about their children seeing gambling ads, especially those associated with shared family activities like sport,” said Ms O’Loughlin.

“Foxtel is well aware of the rules and it is disappointing that this betting promotion was allowed to go to air.”

Foxtel self-reported the breach to the ACMA following a complaint from a viewer. The breach of the rules occurred as a result of human error during the live broadcast.

Following the breach finding, Foxtel provided refresher training to staff about Foxtel’s obligations relating to betting advertising under the Code. Foxtel has also introduced new controls to ensure that gambling advertisements are not improperly broadcast during live sporting events in the future.

This is actually slightly worrying for me because I know an elderly bloke who has an ancient non-IQ Foxtel Cable box, can’t have a dish installed (strata) but has zero need for second internet connection.

Will have to see what goes on.

It sounds like this will open up features that were once only available on cable to all customers who choose the online service, so it sounds like a no brainer if you’ve got a good NBN connection to ditch the dish.

You shouldn’t need a second internet connection.

How often does the ACMA update there rules?

Poorly worded. They don’t have an internet connection at all, I mean.

New IQ5 arrived. Dead on arrival… keeps looking for a satellite signal from the wall plate even though I’m connected via IP. Foxtel are sending out a technician who is going to just confirm what I’m seeing and have another one ordered.

Wow. This is like when IQ3 came out, and I signed up wayyyyyy too early and sent it back twice and downgraded back to IQ2.

Yes not at all surprised at this to be honest. The box is hanging because there’s no satellite connection. The option to choose between satellite or IP doesn’t even happen before it errors out trying to find satellite signal.

Lots of customers will just keep the IQ4. As a satellite subscriber, the IQ4 is only available to me.

IQ2 good
IQ3 bad
IQ4 good
IQ5 not looking good

Ok so I’ve got it to work. Here’s how I did it in case anyone here has the same issue.

When you boot into the box first time it will ask you for an internet connection, make it. Then it’ll look for satellite signal and error out. Force your way through to the Foxtel home page and skip set up by holding Red - Home - Foxtel. (It might be another combination, I was stabbing in the dark and somehow got a hit).

You won’t be able to do anything when you’re in the Foxtel menus, except use the apps. Go to settings and select Set Up. Ignore the fact that it says you’re trying to connect to satellite signal. Once the box is restarted it will actually ask you for your connection type (IP vs Satellite) before it looks for a signal.

If tech Savy people are having issues getting it working and have to find work arounds… what hope has the average consumer got getting it working? Not good

Hopefully they send out an update and organise new scripts for their help staff. It had no issue connecting to the internet, it just did everything in the wrong order.

For anyone wondering about the experience: Other than the teething issue at the start the experience is excellent. I’m picking up FTA signal that my TV wasn’t, picture is clear on HD and Ultra HD channels. SD channels are decent too, they sucked on cable with this 4K setup. Channel switching is nearly instant and as quick as cable. It takes stream resolution less than a second to ramp up from SD to HD or 4K. Menus are fantastic and responsive. It really feels like 1st class technology, not some afterthought like the IQ3 or the MyStars.

Foxtel dont have a great track record with this stuff - the iQ3 was full of bugs at launch, I ended up having mine changed twice because they couldnt work out whether I was having a hardware or software issue

I’d have thought that they’d have shipped the device to go IP first, especially if their intention is you’ll be able to pick one of these up at the likes of JB Hi-Fi

I’m a Now customer because there’s a whopping great big tree just north of my property boundary blocking the satellite path. Based on your experience I’m going to see if they’ll let me qualify as a “new” customer to order IQ5.

Question: Are you getting all of the same channels as satellite/cable subscribers? Now is missing more than a few channels. I know in my household Fox Classics would be embraced by some family members, and being able to use numbers to select channels rather than a scrolling menu would be much easier for the technically-challenged.
