Foxtel

I have been watching The Foxtel Group Content Showcase 2021 which I know is aimed at advertisers but media week had a summery and included the video link and something interesting has just been said: the CEO of the Foxtel media group just said in the coming months the advertisers and I’m assuming us as well will hear more about merging capability as they transform from a subscription tv company to a streaming one .100% IP enabled

Is this really correct, does Foxtel have the #1 BVOD in the market?

The ABC is not included.

But Foxtel on Demand is bigger than Nine, 10 and Seven?

Do those numbers include Kayo?

I’m Not sure. It might include Foxtel, Kayo & Binge

The graph is from the 2020 viewing year and Foxtel’s share if Foxtel Go and Now. It doesn’t include Binge or Kayo. It is only for commercial services.

That is particularly impressive considering

  • Foxtel is a paid subscription where as 9Now, 10Play and 7+ are free
  • FTA has far and away the most popular programming

I wonder if foxtel being #1 is driven by the fact it’s predominantly scripted content and not reality?

Since it’s BVOD minutes viewed, you should take into account that Foxtel offers longer programs (movies, HBO dramas etc) which the FTA catch-ups don’t - resulting in eyes peeled to their service much longer.

Thinking about it, a more fair comparison would be Netflix, Stan etc.

That makes sense. But the free BVODs offer thousands of hour long dramas also.

Remember that FTA networks only have 3-5 channels were Foxtel has 50+? So more content = more views?

Probably the reason why ABC isn’t on that graph!

Wouldn’t it be the hours Of content each platform has? Still I’m really shocked to see foxtel quite clearly ahead of the big 3

Foxtel has very high numbers in live sport; and usually dominates the live VPM ratings - sometimes taking all 10 top places.

So people for example watch 5 days of test cricket on Foxtel Go.

Now it’s making some sense. Thanks!

Ahhh yes it would considering that BVOD viewing share that is being mentioned there by Foxtel group is largely if not mainly consistent of Foxtels core subscriber base meaning there subscribers including the ones who have paid for kayo and binge so yes that would be true.

Hey Foxtel, next time you upload something to the website, you might want to make sure it has something in the ZIP file? Check out the AFL 2021 16x9 zip file…
