Foxtel Group expands deal with World Surf League for 2022 season

FOX SPORTS TO BRING THE 2022 CHAMPIONSHIP TOUR TO SURFING FANS

2022 TO SEE MORE WSL HOURS ON FOXTEL AND KAYO THAN EVER BEFORE

The Foxtel Group and the World Surf League have today announced that they will continue their partnership in 2022 with a new look deal that will see more professional surfing broadcast on Foxtel and streamed on Kayo than ever before.

Fox Sports will launch its coverage of the 2022 WSL Championship Tour with a week-long pop-up channel celebrating the best of surfing and broadcasting every CT event live and an hour-long event wrap for each tour stop.

In addition, fans will be able to watch Challenger Series coverage throughout the year with the 2022 season broadcast over 1100 hours of WSL content, more than any other year in this 13-year partnership.

Foxtel and Kayo will also promote the WSL via Group-wide campaigns across all channels, major sports cross-promotion, integration into Fox Sports programming including shows such as The Back Page, along with producing and broadcasting a 2022 WSL Championship Tour preview show to coincide with the season launch.

“WSL is thrilled to continue our strong and successful relationship with Fox Sports here in Australia,” said WSL Asia Pacific GM Andrew Stark.

“With the introduction of the Rip Curl WSL Finals, 2021 was one of the most watched seasons in WSL history. With the resumption of a full season schedule along with the return of fan favourite events in Tahiti, Indonesia and Hawaii, 2022 is set to be the biggest season in the league’s history. Having Fox Sports partner with WSL once again is so exciting and to see our agreement continue to expand says a lot about the strength of our partnership.”

Foxtel Group Head of Content Acquisitions - Sport, Adam Howarth said: “We’re proud to continue our long-term partnership with the World Surf League which will ensure our 2.4 million subscriber base has access to watch the best surfing action in the world. Being able to showcase more hours than ever before on our platforms also reinforces our commitment to the sport and its passionate fanbase.”

The first event of the 2022 WSL Championship Tour, the Billabong Pipe Masters, will commence on January 29, 2022 following a week-long pop-up surfing channel and season preview on Fox Sports, available on Foxtel and Kayo Sports.

The broadcast deal excludes the Australian Open.

Does Seven have the rights to that or is it open to tender?

I think Seven let its rights deal with Australian PGA lapse, after the 2020 tournament was cancelled due to COVID.

The 2021 Australian PGA Championship, from Royal Queensland Golf Club in Brisbane, will be broadcast live on Fox Sports 503 from tomorrow (January 13) at 12.30pm AEDT.

I thought the Australian PGA and Australian Open are two different events.

Ah yes, it’s “a major coup” for sponsored programming to be made freely available to watch. Give me a break…

I think it will end up either on 10 or it will just be a highlights package afterwards on 7.

It was confirmed last year that the Supercars races will be shown as part of 10’s Australian GP coverage.
