Fox Sports

With A-League set to leave Fox Sports for the first time since the competition began in 2005, what will happen to its commentary team when the current season is over? I reckon Fox Sports will retain Brenton Speed because he can also commentate AFL and NRL matches, but others like Robbie Slater, Mark Bosnich and Andy Harper may be looking for a new job.

I reckon they’ll all go to 10 - similar with what happened to most FOX staff and the exodus to 9/Stan Sport and Rugby Union.

He’s the one of the three I’d keep. He’s a good, analyst commentator. He doesn’t go on about himself and his achievements. Heck, I don’t even know what he’s done in his career! Slater and Bozza were EPL champions, but I don’t know shit about Harps.

I have been a big fan of NBCs US Open coverage ever since 1995, and I am looking forward to seeing them do a look back on Tigers epic win at Torrey Pines in 2008 in the 19 hole playoff…I always enjoy hearing the US Open theme ‘In Celebration Of Man’

Im hoping the Fox Sports coverage doesnt have too much generic world feed, and gives us as much of the NBC feed as possible

The hours NBC are live on air on US TV (AEST)…
round 1 - 9 am to 12 pm Friday
round 2 - 8 to 11 am Saturday
round 3 - 1 to 11 am Sunday
round 4 - 2 to 10 am Monday

No chance, they always use the terrible world feed with boring commentators and for some reason skips all the interviews. Drives me insane

its brutal listening to Aussie Luke Elvy for hours on end with the usga world feed…he sounds a very nice guy, but hes just not the commentator I want to be listening to especially for a major…why does Fox Sports do this to us, is it alot cheaper to feature less of the host broadcaster feed? Continuity wise, with the first 2 rounds shifting to a different network 5 times maybe thats a factor?

I remember NBCs first days of covering the Open, Dick Enberg, Johnny Miller, Dan Hicks, Roger Maltbie and co 1995 Shinnecock on channel 9 and the 90s up to around mid 2000s, and it was pretty much just the straight NBC feed…there would be the theme ‘In Celebration Of Man’ outro with leaderboard to the ad break then come back right to the NBC coverage, with very little ch 9 host Aussie update etc, especially in the final round…usga have put the 95 final round on youtube…

I tried signing up for peacocktv but says you cant watch using a vpn

Its such a shame as Australians are being robbed of proper full coverage of one of the greatest covered annual sporting events, being given a far less lively/interesting coverage

I really enjoy the intros NBC do, and NBC use music so well in their coverage, and I miss this awesome tune they often played during highlight montages 1995 to 2014 that doesnt seem to be getting used this year…“Into the Night” by Exchange…

I also just discovered usga have put, along with many other us open final round back nine broadcasts, the full nbc broadcast of tigers epic in 2008 at torrey pines on youtube…
fourth round on nbc…

19 hole monday playoff on espn/nbc…

My issue is not so much showing the world feed, it’s the world feed itself. Why do they cut in between the NBC guys and world feed guys. They do this every minute it seems. It should be NBC guys unless they go to ad break which is when they show shots with the world feed guys. And they actively avoid to show any interviews, they’ll cut away to some coastal shot to not show them interviewing players. Why is this a thing? It seems to be a problem with the majors. The PGA Tour does this right each week.

But yeah, I do love that NBC golf intro…

Watching both feeds at the same time for the last half-hour, it does appear NBC is the preferred feed. until just prior to going to an ad break, then Fox flicks the switch to world-feed until the feeds sync up again and there’s a break in the commentary on both feeds.

NBC has a lot of ad breaks. So far 3 ad breaks on NBC compared to one on Fox. Also some of the ad breaks on NBC are close together so on Fox for that period, it was world-feed.

what fox sports are doing giving the australian audience the lesser quality more boring generic world feed commentary majority of the time is what they used to do with the players championship for many years on fox sports until finally we got the full nbc/golf channel broadcast

it appears fox dont want to use the golf channel or peacock commentary feed when they are in their broadcast windows, but are giving us some nbc commentary feed(with alot of world feed as well) when nbc are in their 3 hour usa tv broadcast window the first 2 rounds

for this us open alot of round 2 i got frustrated with the fox airing so i just streamed the koepka and mickelson feature groups and the holes 11, 12, 13 stream on us open site that has somewhat better commentary than much of the fox airing…ive also been checking out past nbc covered us opens that the usga posted on youtube

nbc sports are on air for 10 straight hours for round 3 and 8 straight hours for round 4 on us tv, without any switch from nbc to golf channel to peacock etc in usa…so i will be interested to see how much of what fox sports show is nbc and how much is generic world feed luke elvy audio for both weekend rounds…the way it just switches to luke so randomly, and for such extended periods, and so frequently is so jarring continuity wise

i would be fine with however many ad breaks nbc throw in…i just want to have the full commentary/interviews/audio/visual nbc/golf channel/peacock us open coverage experience, without distraction, not just for part of rounds, but for entire rounds of coverage

Coverage has moved to Golf Channel and Fox are using the same commentary, so i don’t think that’s a problem.

Fair enough. I always prefer host broadcaster coverage.

It appears from what i’ve seen from the last 2 hours is that Fox Sports is trying to give viewers more live golf. The world feed allows Fox to cut out a lot of NBC promotional stuff, sponsored segments, long and frequent commercial breaks. That’s pretty much it from what i’ve seen.

I don’t think it’s Fox Sports making this choice. Same adapted feed on Sky NZ.

yeah im surprised they are using some golf channel audio on fox this hour

around the first 4 hours of fox sports coverage in each of round 1 and 2 was pretty much just world feed, when golf channel and peacock were on air, before the evening usa broadcast nbc slot…so i want to see if that changes somewhat over the weekend rounds when its basically only nbc coverage

thanks onair, ive just emailed the usga us open championship feedback email to let them know my thoughts (comments@usga.org)

i also think fox sports should be asking the usga to provide the full host broadcaster coverage like it used to air here when it was on channel 9 in the 90s/2000s and fox sports in the 2000s that didnt feature world feed

when the pga tour on fox sports airs you never see such heavy use of world feed for extended periods, its only brief just when cbs/nbc/golf channel are in ad breaks

Interesting. So it’s not really a world feed. More like an alternative feed for when NBC are in a break etc I assume

an article about usga/world feed from us open last year

that 80% number has been way off so far, its been much less than that overall the first 2 rounds

That would be my suspicions.

A shame they cover up the interviews presumably done by NBC. It feels a bit soulless the world feed.
