Very interesting article from Fox Sports chief Patrick Delany (speaking at Fox Footy HQ in South Melbourne, ahead of the massive AFL final):

Viewers have been locked-out of the Australia v Ireland ODI in South Africa tonight after Fox Sports decided against buying the game which was seperate from the 5-match ODI series with the Proteas beginning on September 30 that Fox will show. http://www.espncricinfo.com/australia/content/story/1059313.html

Pretty poor form.

Especially when it’s a worthy enough event for other networks to use footage sourced from illegally uploaded YouTube clips for their sports reports.

Oh dear. The former NRL star-cum-boxer…

Is perfectly acceptable in that context.

Happy 10th birthday Fox Sports News https://www.facebook.com/foxsportsaus/videos/1315543235124146/

Fox Sports Bathurst Channel is using the split screen this weekend like this:

Why would this be? This occurs when Channel 10 goes to an ad break.

Most likely part of the rights agreement (could also be the anti-siphoning law) . This also happens during the Australian Formula One Grand Prix.

Here’s the official explanation:

FOX SPORTS will continue to provide Supercars fans with the best coverage of their sport during the 2016 Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000, with continuous LIVE coverage of the event all weekend.

The broadcast arrangement means Supercars qualifying and race coverage, and support categories simulcast on Network TEN (for this weekend only) will include TEN’s commercial content.

However FOX SPORTS will ensure fans don’t miss any of the racing, with qualifying and race action continuously available LIVE through a split screen feature, integrating Network TEN ads with FOX SPORTS’ non-stop coverage.

Seems like the same deal with formula 1 race in Melbourne. That for the simulcast fox need to show tens ads. Clearly there must be a revenue share ageeement or ten get all the advertising revenue with a guarantee to advertisers to show the ads on pay tv as well.

This sort of shit simply shouldnt happen - this is frustrating

It would appear that the NBL are now doing their own production and supplying a feed to Fox Sports - unlike before where Fox produced it. Really not sure about it, the scoreboard in particular (complete with fake LED scoreboard effect) is quite hideous, not to mention out of sync.

Far cry from the minimalist look Fox had last year, which matched their graphics for their other sports.

Wonder why Fox Sports decided to let someone with less experience than them take control, and why it’s not a similar setup to the AFL, where they produce a feed that goes out to Seven, and just remove all Fox branding?

The original contract Fox signed with the NBL allowed it to be ‘reviewed’ after the first season which is how the changes to the production could be introduced this year.

The most logical answer to your question is Fox saves money not having to produce the broadcasts whilst having live content on multiple nights of the week to air during Summer aside from the A-League

Looks like it’s the same set up as the previous netball deal where it was produced externally. Goes out live on fox and live on the NBL app.

Fox seem to be supplying the commentators through Warren Smith, Anthony Hudson, Dwayne Russell etc.

The graphics are hideous. Although the camera work seems to be pretty good. New angles etc.

Really do hate it when they produce the sports externally. The NBL graphics are too 3D imo, even the full screen scoreboard looks like something from NBA2K games.

Last years graphics from FOX were so much nicer!

Not to mention that the score goes up in increments of 1, and there’s no stats line like last year!

Their camerawork is quite nice though, I’ll give the NBL that. Do wonder how its going down with those at Fox Sports whose role it is to make sure that what is being shown on their network is up to their standards. Maybe them and the NBL could’ve shared the production costs and that would’ve allowed Fox to have more input?

It is good to see the competition get a big boost in exposure though, that TEN/ONE deal just about killed them. It’s a long road to even come close to the A-League and cricket in terms of popularity and attendance levels, but its a good start.

Foxtel today announced that applications are now open for the 2017 Foxtel All-Stars Tim Cahill Ambitions Tour, a search for young footballers who deserve a chance to follow their dreams.

24 lucky teenagers* (12 boys and 12 girls) will be selected and flown to Melbourne to take part in the Foxtel All-Stars Tim Cahill Ambitions Tour; an exclusive five day camp (15th – 20th January 2017) at Melbourne City Academy, Bundoora with Tim Cahill where they will experience the life of a professional footballer with intense coaching and mentoring from top industry experts.

Foxtel and Fox Sports are also proud to announce an extended partnership with Tim Cahill as a brand ambassador until 2020, with plans to further expand grassroots football activities around Australia.

*Participants must be aged 15 or 16 at the commencement of the Ambitions Tour on the 15th January 2017. Fox Sports, on Foxtel, is the home of the Hyundai A-League with every game live, ad break free during play and in HD

I just noticed how bad the ratings are for the NBL on fox sports. It’s a complete disaster really. Extraordinarily niche sport.

They need free to air exposure.

No one subscribes to Foxtel for the NBL and the NBL won’t ever get a fanbase without exposure to a wider audience in the first place.

They had 3 years of FTA exposure in Ten/One. It nearly killed them.

They need a couple of marquee players from the NBA. What’s Kobe Bryant doing these days?

Edit: 30k isn’t that bad? Considering the cost of NBL rights compared to A-League I think Fox would probably be happy with that. Defientely improving and crowd numbers are way up. Fox Sports should be investing more into it.
