Dwayne Russell and Anthony Hudson (both of whom also work for SEN) were given the all-clear by DHHS so were able to commentate yesterday’s matches - North Melbourne v Fremantle and Port Adelaide v Essendon, respectively.

AFL 360 celebrates 1000 episodes

AFL360_1000_STILL_3a

FOX FOOTY juggernaut AFL 360 will this Wednesday reach a whopping 1,000 episodes, making it the highest amount of episodes of an AFL television show in Australian history.

The institution hosted by prominent odd couple Gerard Whateley and Mark “Robbo” Robinson will celebrate with a 90 minute special on the eve of the final home and away round of the unusual 2020 season.

Having spent 1000 episodes, 60,000 minutes, 3,600,000 million seconds on-air together since episode one in 2010, Gerard and Robbo will look back at some of their most significant and most fun moments and favourite guests of the past 10 years.

The show’s longest serving player and coach – Hawthorn premiership superstar Jordan Lewis – and Geelong’s Chris Scott will join the episode along with the show’s first pairing David King and Mark Maclure.

AFL CEO Gillon McLachlan will also be part of the coverage festivities live from the hub in Queensland.

Western Bulldogs legend and AFL 360 regular, Bob Murphy, will present the all-time Top 5 Rascals of the Week, a regular segment that celebrates the cheeky side of the game.

Show-favourites Jack Riewoldt, Nick Riewoldt and Jarryd Roughead will also be live in studio along with a host of tributes shared by Neale Daniher, Nathan Buckley, Alastair Clarkson, Chris Fagan, Nat Fyfe, NicNaitanui and premiership coach Damien Hardwick.

Just noticed that, including last Sunday’s Sydney Swans vs Brisbane Lions match, eight of the last nine match-ups between those two sides have had Anthony Hudson as the chief caller (the odd one out was in round 7, 2014 when Matt Campbell called).

Did the eight of those nine matches all happened to be played in a timeslot where Anthony Hudson is the regular caller?

Or was he just filling in on a lot of those match ups and it was just a coincidence it was the Swans and the Lions playing?

To my knowledge I don’t think each Fox-produced match has a specific roster like Seven - depends on who is available and who Fox thinks would be the best caller for a specific match. For example, a match played at Perth Stadium would be called by Adam Papalia, regardless of its timeslot.

Jam-packed night of AFL Awards only on Foxtel

Some of the AFL’s most prestigious awards, including the All-Australian team, NAB Rising Star, player-voted MVP and Champion Player of the Year according to the coaches will all be presented on the same evening this Thursday only on FOX FOOTY.

As we lead in to the 2020 Toyota AFL Finals Series, Sarah Jones will host the respected AFL Awards, which will this year be held in a special virtual format. A suite of FOX FOOTY commentators, including Nick Riewoldt and Jonathan Brown , will speak exclusively with each of the 22 All-Australian 2020 inductees, hearing the superstars’ reactions to this incredible honour.

“Just like this year, the AFL Awards will be like none other before. We’re looking forward to celebrating these prestigious awards in one big blockbuster night and hearing from the players and winners throughout the 90 minute special,” general manager of Fox Footy Michael Neill said.

The awards that are usually given out in separate events will be broadcast in a jam-packed 90-minute special from 7.30pm this Thursday, September 24 on FOX FOOTY, channel 504 on Foxtel.

Tonight is so cringe… just interview then about footy, no one cares about the other stuff

I get annoyed when a lot of the Victorian commentators have no idea about the interstate teams. Nick Riewoldt claims Port Adelaide lost Geelong and Richmond which isn’t true. They beat Richmond.

Why does Foxtel Now still have Footy Play rather than Fox Footy? Are there any differences between both channels?

They show the Seven feed with Seven local ads. Same on Kayo.

When the 2012 broadcast deal was setup, Foxtel/Telstra bought the streaming rights blocking ch7 from streaming their own games. In return ch7 games on streaming have to show the pure ch7 stream from first bounce to final siren (including ads and halftime show).

It’s a lose/lose for the consumer, but I’m sure it got the AFL an extra $5m per year so it was worth it

But does it show any actual channel Seven programming at other times, or does it show archive matches as filter like the actual Fox Footy?

I think it’s more to do of the state based nature of the deal. Teams outside Vic guaranteed to see games in home market. Would be challenges if 7 were to stream in home market for free and not be available in Fox exclusive states.

They are not allowed to stream Fox Footy as per the broadcast rights contract. As stated elsewhere, this is where they stream Ch7 feeds of games (with ads).

No, when no live game is on there is a static screen showing the date/time of the next game for broadcast.

I thought it was all because of Telstra Live Pass (who technically are the ‘streamer’), so Foxtel who’ve clearly been allowed rights to live stream via Foxtel Go/Now/Kayo have to therefore call it something else Footy Play ?

Think you’re right because you would think if Foxtel got the streaming rights directly from the AFL, they would have pushed to be able to properly stream Fox Footy (ie; not have to take Seven’s feed for their games)

Slightly different on Kayo. Fox Footy is available and shows all programs except actual games where there is a static slide advising viewers to select the live game on-demand from the AFL carousel, which takes you to the Seven broadcast of the game.

There is another Fox Footy stream on Kayo which shows Fox Footy as per normal and then switches to the live Seven broadcast within the same stream for a more seamless experience. But it appears this is only accessible using the unofficial Kodi plugin. I’ve never found it within the Kayo app or website.

I thought this was only the case for the overflow Footy Play Plus channel on Now/Go? How does one watch normal Fox Footy programming?

I think thats the original Fox Footy stream Kayo were using before they switched out for the Footy Play setup (I’ve also noticed that my Foxtel sub uses Footy Play when I stream online, dont think it was doing that before)

Would be interesting to see audience data for Telstra Live Pass on the AFL website/app, that’s if it even exists internally (surely being a Telecom) and I’m sure AFL top brass would want such info. Wonder if it’s ever been in the Annual Reports?

We know Foxtel internally know Kayo audience data and have been drip-feeding it in media releases/to the media/AFL.

And of course all other data is officially measured through OzTam and RegionalTam (FTA broadcast Seven, STV Foxtel and SVOD Foxtel GO/NOW aka Footy Play).
